Jimin rushed through the streets, trying to avoid any collision with the people flooding it, in a Christmas frenzy, arms full of shopping bags and wallets ready to blast until the last cent. It was a lovely season, Jimin had to admit. People coming together and families reunited. Presents were exchanged and carols were sung at every corner. There was just something about Christmas that made Jimin love it so much, even though his whole existence told otherwise. It’s just…despite being of Autumn, Jimin really didn’t care about Halloween. Monsters and spooky things were nothing compared to the thrill of children when tearing apart the first present of the evening.
When the streets became less packed with people, Jimin slowed his pace. He was almost at his destination. A particular shinning shop window caught his eye. He looked at his watch. He still had time. He entered the little quaint shop, strangely not full with people and bought the little object that had caught his eye. Hoseok would love it.
With a smile on his face and bundled up in his four layers of clothing – Yoongi had been particularly harsh this season. Jimin didn’t remember a colder winter – he continued his journey. Hoseok awaited him.
He was greeted with a red nose and tired eyes. Hoseok looked quite the figure, cocooned in the warmest of the blankets and still with purple lips.
Because that was the problem for those of Summer like Hoseok was: winters were always tough to get through. Out of all of Summer Jimin had known since he had become a Autumn Spirit, Hoseok was the one who had suffered more due to the effects of winter. Jimin didn’t know how to explain, but perhaps it were the shorter days and the less radiation of the sun, or the unforgiving wind and the frustrating snow. It might even be the way Hoseok couldn’t get his hands and feet warm – Jimin really didn’t know why Hoseok was always so affected because of Winter. He knew that Taehyung, a spirit of Summer as well, didn’t feel that bad. Sure his mood was affected sometimes, but nothing compared to Hoseok. And not even Yoongi, who was of Winter, was that affected when Summer came. Lord, he even enjoyed the sun to take those long naps he loved so much. Just Hoseok was deeply affected by the change of seasons and Jimin always felt a crushing pain inside of him for not being able to do anything to ease the other’s pain.
“I am dying,” Hoseok grumbled, going back to his sofa and rolling into himself. “How long do we have until it’s over?”
“Two months, more or less? Seokjin should arrive around the beginning of March.”
“I’ll be dead by then. What did Yoongi have in his head to make it rain for two weeks straight? And the cold! My feet are like ice rocks!”
“Probably orders from above,” Jimin explained, taking off his jacket. He ignored the grumpy response. “Shall I make tea?”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Hoseok grumbled from under the blankets. “It’s not like my feet will be any less freezing with tea.”
Two cups of tea and butter cookies later and Hoseok was comfortably snoozing off on top of Jimin, who gently petted the other’s soft light-coloured hair. Jimin smiled down at Hoseok. He seemed to be in a better mood, though not quite his own self. Yet, any improvement was better than no improvement at all, Jimin had learnt. At least, now Hoseok wasn’t chapping his teeth and his lips had returned to their natural colour. His hands were still cold, but not freezing anymore and his body had recovered some of its natural temperature.
Hoseok scrunched his nose and blinked his eyes open. Jimin continued with his fingers on the other’s hair. Hoseok’s eyes closed again, the warmth of slumber welcoming.
“What time is it?” He asked, groggily, snuggling more into Jimin.
“Don’t know. Probably around six,” Jimin replied quietly. “I can’t see the sun but it’s not that dark yet.”
“Stupid winter,” Hoseok complained, but not with the real force of a complaint. “It’s not even a decent winter. Almost Christmas and no snow yet. Yoongi is doing a shitty job.”
Because the thing is that, despite how much winter affected Hoseok, how much he hated the freezing cold, the harsh wind and the annoying rain, Hoseok loved snow. Hoseok loved snow especially during Christmas. Call it childish dreams, the inevitable wish of human life to have what it can’t have, whatever it may please you. Hoseok, a Summer spirit with the body temperature of a summer day and capable of making the crops grow and calming the oceans, loved the only thing he could never have: snow. It was the only thing that made winter minimally bearable. And it was the only thing it hadn’t happened yet. It was no wonder Hoseok’s mood had been in such a state.
“Speaking of snow,” Jimin said, tapping Hoseok lightly on the shoulder for him to move. “I got you something.” He rummaged through his jacket’s pocket until he found the small box poorly wrapped in some ugly polka-dot paper. “Sorry about the wrapping. The store was cool. Their wrapping paper not.”
Hoseok received the small box with a furrowed brow, but a smile creeping on his face nonetheless. “What is this? We usually don’t do gifts,” he looked at Jimin suspiciously.
“Well, I saw it and thought of you. You can hand it back, if you don’t want it.”
“No!” Hoseok exclaimed, getting the small box away from Jimin’s hands. Without a care for the wrapping paper – it was ugly after all – Hoseok opened his gift. He opened the box and from inside he retrieved this little snow globe, with a small Christmas tree inside. “Jimin-ah! Wow!”
“You should try shaking it,” Jimin said, not daring to look Hoseok in the eye.
Hoseok did. He shook the small globe and as the first speckles of fake snow started to fall down, the first snow flake fell on Hoseok’s hair. And then another and another. Then another at the tip of his nose. Hoseok, very slowly, looked up and blinked twice. He opened his hand and a couple of snowflakes fell on it. He looked at Jimin, eyes wide and shinning, not quite believing what they were seeing.
“Ji-jiminie…What-what is this?”
Jimin rubbed the back of his neck embarrassed. He didn’t know Hoseok would be so surprised and so happy. This was nothing like what Yoongi could do. This was just –
“I thought…well, I thought it could be a surprise? Sometimes it snows a bit in Autumn…So I figured I could try? And I enchanted the snow globe. Now, every time it is shook it snows.”
“Jiminie!” Hoseok lunged himself on top of him, shaking the globe in his movement and making it snow more.
“It’s nothing!” He sputtered, not really sure of what to do. “If you ask Yoongi he’ll probably make it a lot more like snow. Mine is just –”
“Perfect! Your snow is perfect,” Hoseok said over him, once again snuggled against his chest, a pleased smile on his face. “Thank you!”
It was calm and cosy, the wind outside a far away threat that didn’t scare them. The streets were probably still packed with people, in constant rush and hurry. Inside the small living room, the snowflakes fell on by one, sometimes on Jimin’s nose, sometimes on Hoseok’s hair. But it wasn’t cold. They were quiet, warm and slow. It was just the two of them. Hoseok and Jimin. Jimin and Hoseok. Summer and Autumn. The winter outside could continue ruining umbrellas and perfectly styled hairs. They would continue inside, next to each other and it would be nothing but perfection.
