Scenting in the Break Room

Summary:

Scenting, nuzzling, and feline fluff. Secret Agent (Black Cat) x Head Nurse (White Cat).

Notes:

I ship Secret Agent (Black Cat) x Head Nurse (White Cat).

So I wrote them in their break and them being cats because scenting is normal.

Work Text:

The break room was a sliver of peace in the controlled chaos that was the Animal Hospital. The sterile scent of antiseptic and fear was faint here, replaced by the mild aroma of burnt coffee and the dusty warmth of old magazines. For the Head Nurse, a pristine white cat with fur like fresh snow and eyes the color of black pearls, it was a sanctuary. She sat on the worn-out couch, her tail curled neatly around her paws, meticulously cleaning a spot on her forearm.

The door slid open without a sound. She didn't need to look up to know who it was. The air itself seemed to sharpen, the faint, familiar scent of ozone and gunpowder bleeding into the room. It was a scent that spoke of rooftops at midnight, of secrets whispered in the rain, and of a controlled danger that always made her fur prickle, not with fear, but with an awareness she couldn’t quite suppress.

Secret Agent, the sleek black cat, slipped in. His golden eyes swept the room in a single, efficient scan (a habit he couldn't break) before they landed on her. He was a shadow given form, his fur absorbing the harsh fluorescent light. He didn’t speak, just moved to the small counter to pour himself a cup of the bitter coffee, his movements fluid and silent.

The silence stretched, comfortable and heavy. The Head Nurse finally lifted her gaze. “Back from your ‘errand’?” she asked, her voice a soft, melodic purr.

“It was dealt with,” he replied, his voice low, a smooth rumble. He took a sip of the coffee and made a small, almost imperceptible grimace.

She almost smiled. The cat who could disarm a bomb with his eyes closed couldn’t handle the break room coffee.

He turned, his emerald gaze meeting hers. He moved away from the counter and, instead of taking the armchair across from her, he sat on the couch. Right next to her. Close. Far closer than was socially acceptable for two colleagues on a break.

The Head Nurse’s heart gave a traitorous little leap. He was so warm, a pocket of heat in the cool room. She could feel the fine tremor of coiled energy that always hummed beneath his calm exterior. Instinct warred with professionalism. She was a professional. She was the Head Nurse. She was supposed to maintain order.

But in that moment, she was just a cat.

His scent was overwhelming. Not just the metal and rain, but a deeper, muskier undertone that was pure him. It was the scent of safety and danger intertwined, a paradox that called to something primal deep within her. Her own scent, clean and floral with the faintest hint of lavender from her shampoo, seemed to bloom in response, marking the air around her.

She saw his nostrils flare almost imperceptibly. He was cataloging her. Scenting the air she breathed out. A shiver of pleasure, not from fear, but from being so thoroughly known, ran down her spine.

He set his coffee down on the floor, a clear sign he was no longer interested in it. Then, he leaned in. It was an unspoken question, a silent permission he was asking with his eyes. She gave the tiniest nod, her own body betraying her, leaning towards him.

The first touch was a bare whisper of fur against fur. His dark muzzle brushed against her temple, a gentle, exploratory nuzzle. He inhaled deeply, a soft sound that was half-purr, half-sigh, as he took in the scent gathered at the base of her ear. Her own body answered, a deep, resonant purr rumbling in her chest. He was scenting her, marking her with his own presence, and she was letting him.

He moved slowly, deliberately. He traced the curve of her cheek, his whiskers tickling her skin. He nuzzled into the soft, immaculate white fur of her neck, rubbing his own scent glands against hers. The sensation was electric, a wave of pure, feline comfort that felt more intimate than any human kiss. It was a declaration, a claiming, a way of saying, You are mine, and I am yours, and the world is ours to face.

Her own instincts took over. She lifted her head, returning the gesture. She pressed her nose into the thick, midnight black fur at the base of his throat, inhaling his scent deeply. It was like breathing in the night sky itself. Her purr deepened as she rubbed her cheek against his jawline, leaving her own floral scent on his dark coat. A mark for the rest of the hospital to find, a secret sign that the stoic Agent and the composed Nurse were more than just colleagues.

He let out a low, satisfied hum. His body finally relaxed, the last of the tension from his mission melting away as they settled into this silent, ancient ritual. He rested his forehead against hers, his green eyes now half-lidded and soft.

“Better?” she whispered.

His answer was a low, rumbling purr that vibrated through both their bodies. He didn’t need to say it. He was home, enveloped in the scent of lavender and safety, and all was right in his world.

They stayed like that, two cats tangled in the quiet warmth of the break room, letting their scents mingle and interweave until they were indistinguishable from one another. The beepers and the calls could wait. In this stolen moment, there was only them.
