what is it, truly, to admire a woman?

Summary:

An expansion of Benedict’s S2 poem, integrated with his thoughts about Sophie in S4 — from their second meeting, leading up to shortly after the offer.

Notes:

See if you catch the references I put in! Constructive criticism is welcome.

Work Text:

The world moves on, oblivious to us

while you, my mysterious love, have arrested my heart.

The light wraps around us like silk

as my honeyed words die in my throat, like a fly tangled in a spider’s web.

No. I cannot pretend. Not with you.

(What is it, truly, to admire a woman?)

Like a storybook fairy, your radiance blinds me

You, as luminous as the very moon and the stars.

There is much I do not know about you still - you, in your maids’ garb, highborn accent and impeccable French.

But I will find out. You cannot hide from me!

Sun-drenched grass, a gentle breeze

An inner child, long locked away, set free.

We flew kites, careless as the wind

as if no mountains lay between us then.

I felt your presence behind that tree

like the loveliest phantom ever seen.

The press of our lips, sweet yet brimming with passion

Your almond eyes, irises dark as the whiskey I almost drowned in — until I found you.

We looked out at the stars

the bittersweet ache of country days lingering.

I chanced a glance into your eyes

and felt, for an enchanting moment, like i was sitting among those very stars.

No one, in silver or not, could ever compare.

(To look at her, and feel inspiration)

(To delight in her beauty)

Silver muse a fading memory, I began to draw you.

Pages and pages filled with pictures of you, the maids’ dress not dimming your beauty

but simply a painful reminder

of what we cannot have.

(So much so that all your defences crumble)

Like a moth to a flame, lodestone to smith’s dust

I feel drawn to you.

I wish to reveal all my secrets and fears to you —

things that no one save myself knows.

(That you would willingly take on any pain, any burden for her)

I cannot bear to see you toil.

Cannot bear, to see you serve

The fantasy shattered, and given way to reality.

(To honour her being with your deeds and words)

You deserve more.

We may not be able to be together as we wish

— but we will be together.

Tucked away in the countryside, away from prying eyes.

I will take care of you.

Simply give me the word, and we shall go.

(Alas — I could not have asked anything worse.

I shall beg and fall at your feet for forgiveness.

I shall walk on my knees through the desert, repenting.

but I am at a loss for how to make amends

— if only you would not avoid me!

The crush of not knowing is surely worse than any rebukes you may have.

Just a single word, please

— so that I may know where I stand.)
