i didn’t see you before, but i see you now

Summary:

Kurt helps Sebastian in a time of need, and Kurt receives just the motivation he needs to make a decision for solely himself for once.

Work Text:

Everything was in black and white, it seemed. Like a classic film he pretends to like to seem classy and refined on Tumblr, but really he thinks it’s shit. Sebastian’s vision was blurred, and he was stumbling all around the club, until he stops and clutches onto the countertop. It’s been a while since he’s let himself get like this, and for a good reason: it was fucking embarrassing. Right now, what he was meant to be doing, was collecting donations for Karofsky and his family.

Shit.

The thought is enough to stir him slightly out of his drunken stupor. There’s no way he could drive in this state, all inebriated and tired, unless he wanted to end up on the news as a headline ‘Gay Dalton Student Sebastian Smythe Found Dead In A Ditch!’ or something equally as stupid. And for a second, he allows himself to wonder just exactly who would even care if he did die tonight. Surely not his family or any of the Warblers. They’ll just replace him with someone else probably way better and charming than he was.

Uhm, no, that’s not even possible. That was gay talk, even for himself. Clearly, he is the best the Warblers ever had the pleasure of being captain, and who gives a damn about his family anyway? They’re all conservative Republicans.

But no amount of drunken self reflection could fix the actual problem here: him not being able to get home because he literally can’t drive. His brain raked through all the possible options. There was Blaine, which he blinded not even that long ago with a rock salt slushie all in the name of show choir. There was also Jeff, who he promised he would stop drinking to just yesterday. He would actually rather just ending up dead in a ditch than deal with a Jeff monologue about how drinking is killing him slowly and that he’s not facing the actual problem, blah blah blah.

Fine, he would just have to resort to drastic measures.

To Blaine:

hey sexy u wake??? how bout u come to scandals and pick meup omfgeim so deunk pls

He should be a poet or something.

From Blaine:

Blaine still has your number? Ridiculous. Blocking you in 3 2 1

You can no longer message this person.

Maybe God really is against gay people, because this is ridiculous. He sighs, shoves his phone in his pocket, and leans against his car like he’s in a porno. Of fucking course Kurt is the one to respond to his text, he despises him more than anyone in the Nude Erections or whatever it’s called. He wouldn’t be surprised if Kurt had some manifesto about him dying for daring to lay his grimy hands on poor little Blainey Wainey. His false attractions for the boy had gone away when Blaine proved himself as a whiny little brat who always needs to protect his 5’10 boyfriend while being like 5’7 himself.

He was about to gain the balls to get in his car and drive home himself, when his phone buzzed against his leg. He pulls it out, and notices he got a text from an unknown number.

To Sebastian:

Hey, I’m on the way.

From Sebastian:

????

To Sebastian:

To Scandals? This is Kurt. I’m picking you up.

From Sebastian:

how do u ven kno im at scandals dumb mf

wait but yyyyy

do u think im hot ;))) im not uusualy into twinks but u can be exception

To Sebastian:

You just told Blaine you were at Scandals?

I just feel bad. After hearing your apology in the Lima Bean, it made me rethink a few things.

It made me realize that you aren’t 100% asshole. Just 90%.

I’m driving now so I’ll explain more when I get there, just stay where you are.

Oh, he was totally into him. Sebastian smiles while pocketing his phone again, and looks up into the night sky. Despite all the bullshit about it he hears, he doesn’t see a single constellation, just a bunch of stars. It makes him feel dizzy, so he resorts to looking back down at the ground. His head was pounding now, and not the good kind. Every sound felt ear splitting now, even just the slightest breeze sounded like a hurricane.

Some poor person car was much worse, and not just because it was classless. Whoever was in the car was also blasting Come What May. He only knew one person that was that gay.

Kurt steps out with all of his rainbow glory, music still blasting behind him. “Well? Get in the car.” he says, then glances at Sebastian’s car. “Oh, is that your car?”

Sebastian smirks. Of course it was his car, who else would drive—or afford—a Porsche in Unknown, Ohio? “Sure is, baby. I really don’t wanna be seen in your..” he pauses, glancing at Kurt’s car appraisingly. “Poor man’s car.”

He can’t see him, but he’s pretty sure Kurt just rolled his eyes at him. “Just get in the car. Once you’re sober, I’ll drop you off and let you pick it up. I’m doing you a favor right now, the least you can do is thank me.”

“No way. Dalton is about an hour away, so you better start driving.” He can feel Kurt’s irritated gaze on him as he slides into the passenger seat. “And turn this off. What, did the cyclops call it quits? This is terrible.”

Kurt frowns, and that’s the only answer he receives to the question. “You’re sitting in the back, actually. I don’t feel like dealing with your attitude at 2 in the morning.” Kurt hops into the front seat and turns the music off. “I also don’t want you puking in the front. This is my baby.”

He raises an eyebrow. “So you can act straight passing.”

“And he's got jokes up his sleeve!” Kurt rolls his eyes. “I'm a certified mechanic, I know more about cars than you will ever know about making yourself look actually presentable.”

“Oh, don't deflect now, Hummel. We need to talk about your sexts towards me. ”

“..My what?” Kurt asks, face slightly flushed. He pulls out his phone, and seems to actually be making sure he didn’t somehow sext him while driving. “What are you talking about?”

Sebastian snorts, crossing his arms. “You know exactly what I mean. ‘Your apology in the Lima Bean made me rethink a few things’. And also the fact that you drove all the way here. Real scandalous, especially for my favorite baby gay.”

“Oh, that.” Kurt puts the car into drive and begins to exit the parking lot. “I guess it made me think that you aren’t the evil show choir Disney villain that you think you are. You’re scared of something, and you act like you’re above it all just because you.. I don’t know. You’re human.”

In all 17 years of his life, no one bothered to read beyond the asshole facade he wore like skin over his bones. It was easy, to smirk and make a joke of everything because then he would never have to take accountability or face himself. Karofsky’s suicide attempt partly changed that; for once he felt the need to take accountability because someone almost died. But was that what it took for him to take accountability?

And what the hell would it take for him to face himself?

“Are you okay? You haven’t said anything for the past 5 minutes.” Kurt asks from the front seat, lacking the singing he said he would be doing. “Sorry. Probably weird that I’m just saying all of this.” He turns the music back on, this time Britney Spears.

“With a taste of your lips I’m on a ride,” Sebastian mutters, and forces back a grin as he sees Kurt’s raised eyebrow in the rear view mirror. “You’re toxic, I’m slipping under—”

No.” Kurt interrupts. “I've had enough of singing this week. Trust me, you don't want to cross the person driving you all the way back to Dalton.”

Sebastian fakes a frown, leaning forward to try and change the song. “Singing? What's going on in the Nude Erections?”

“It's the New Directions. And nothing in particular, I'm just annoyed this week. Blaine accused me of cheating on him, and made it public by singing a breakup Whitney Houston song.”

Sebastian gives a surprised laugh. “And did you cheat on him?”

Sebastian can't see Kurt's face right now, but he's sure that Kurt rolled his eyes. “No, I didn't cheat on him. I met a guy at Between the Sheets—”

Between the sheets? Don't use metaphors, just say it outright that you slept with someone else.”

“Don't interrupt me. It's a sheet music store, not whatever sexed-up gay erotica euphemism you're thinking of. Anyway, this guy and I got to talking, and he told me he was planning to go to college in New York, and I said I was too, so we exchanged numbers so we would both have a friend that would be in New York. A few days go by, and he starts sending me these little pick-up lines, like ones you would see on kids Valentine's Day cards, y'know? I showed them to Sam, and he thought it was hilarious. Blaine did not. I was out of the room, and my phone was going off, and Blaine grabbed it to check who it was, and it was the guy. Blaine ends up reading through all the texts, I come back, and we ended up having a big fight about it. Next day in glee club, he sings It's Not Alright But It's Okay, and everyone sang along. I was so embarrassed and angry at the same time. And when he texted you, he had fallen asleep after another fight, and I guess that I was just so.. emotional that I just had to help you.”

Sebastian hums, unsure of what to say and how to say it without sounding like a major dick. “..Oh, shit. Well, I'm sure you know now that me and Blaine still text, even after slushiegate.”

Kurt sighs. “I just don't know why whenever he gets flirted with, it's fine, but when I do, it's a national disaster.”

“Maybe he doesn't think you're attractive enough to be flirted with,” he replied, then grimaced, backtracking. “Probably not, but um—”

The attempt at backtracking did not work, because Kurt's now glossy eyes met his in the rearview mirror. “You really think that? Be honest, I just need a second opinion. I've came to that conclusion myself, but I want a second opinion.”

Fuck. There was no way for him to snark out of this. “..Well, he just never sticks up for you. I've insulted you to your face, and he would be right there, and he doesn't say shit about it. You know I never wanted him, right? I just wanted him back on the Warblers so we would have a better chance at winning, and along the way I realized how shitty he was, and it turned into me trying to show you just how shitty he is. Do you know what he sent me? I'll show you, right now.”

“I can't look, I’m driving.” Kurt said, sounding dejected but not surprised.

“Then pull over.”

“I said I can't—”

“Pull over.”

Kurt sighs in frustration. “I don't care about what he said to you. But what you have said has made me make up my mind on a few things.”

Sebastian perks up. “Like?”

“Tomorrow, I'll be breaking up with Blaine.”
