I've never forgotten

Summary:

It starts with an old class photo.
As Class 1-A laughs about all the times they accidentally forgot Toru Hagakure was standing beside them, Izuku Midoriya quietly reveals that he remembers every little thing she did.
The paper stars.
The borrowed gloves.
The songs she hummed before exams.
For the first time, Toru begins to wonder if there has always been someone who saw her exactly as she was.
Maybe being invisible was never the same as being unseen.

Work Text:

It started with a photo album.

Class 1-A had gathered in the common room after dinner, mostly because Mina had somehow convinced everyone that looking through old U.A. photographs would be "the funniest thing ever."

"So..."

She dramatically placed the album on the coffee table.

"...Who wants to relive our collective fashion disasters?"

"I refuse," Iida said immediately.

"You wore three different shades of blue on your first day," Kaminari replied.

"...I did?"

"You absolutely did."

Laughter spread around the room.

Mina opened the album.

"There we go!"

"The entrance ceremony!"

Everyone leaned in.

"So young," Kirishima laughed.

"We were young," Jirō corrected.

"It was only a few years ago."

"It feels longer."

Pages turned.

Sports Festival.

Training camp.

Christmas parties.

Dorm decorating competitions.

Study groups.

Every photograph brought another story.

Another memory.

Another reason for someone to laugh.

"Oh!"

Mina stopped on a group picture from
one of their rescue exercises.

"...Remember this?"

Ochaco laughed.

"That was the day Sero got stuck upside down."

"It was one time."

"It was hilarious."

"It wasn't."

"It really was."

Toru leaned over from behind the sofa.

"These are so cute."

She couldn't actually see herself in most of the photographs.

Just her gloves.

Her boots.

The occasional outline where someone had edited a little label over her position afterward.

She was used to it.

She'd always been used to it.

Kaminari chuckled.

"You know..."

"I swear half the time I forgot Hagakure was even standing next to us back then."

Several people laughed knowingly.

"It did happen a lot," Sero admitted.

"You'd suddenly answer a question and we'd all jump."

"Sorry!" Toru laughed.

"I couldn't exactly wave."

"You literally could," Jirō replied.

"...Fair point."

The laughter continued.

It wasn't cruel.

Not even slightly.

Just one of those shared class memories everyone found funny.

Toru laughed too.

Because honestly… it had been funny.

Most of the time.

"...Really?"

The single word made the room go quiet.

Everyone looked toward Izuku.

He blinked in confusion.

"You forgot?"

Kaminari shrugged.

"Sometimes."

Izuku frowned thoughtfully.

"I don't think I ever did."

The room fell silent.

"...Huh?" Kaminari asked.

Izuku looked down at the photograph.
He pointed toward what looked like empty space beside Ochaco.

"That was the day Hagakure tripped over Sero's tape."

Sero blinked.

"...It was?"

Toru stared.

"I... did."

Izuku turned the page.

Another photo.

"You'd lent Uraraka your gloves because hers got soaked during training."

Ochaco's eyes widened.

"...I'd forgotten that."

Toru hadn't.

But...

She hadn't expected anyone else to remember.

Another page.

"You kept humming during lunch because Jirō said it helped everyone stay calm before the licensing exam."

Jirō slowly looked toward Toru.

"...You did do that."

"I..." Toru whispered.

Another page.

"You made everyone paper stars for the dorm Christmas party."

Mina blinked.

"Oh my gosh..."

"You did."

"I still have mine," Kirishima said.

One by one...

More memories surfaced.

Not big moments.

Not dramatic ones.

Just… little things.

The sort of things most people never noticed.

Or remembered.

Except… Izuku had.

Every single one.

He looked up.

"...What?"

No one answered immediately.

Because they were all looking at Toru.

She wasn't laughing anymore.

She was simply staring at him.

As though she'd just realized something she'd never even thought to ask.

And for the first time that evening...

The old photographs didn't seem nearly as important as the memories someone had quietly carried with them all these years.

The common room remained unusually quiet.

Kaminari was the first to recover.

"...Dude."

Izuku looked over.

"...Yeah?"

"How do you remember all that?"

Izuku blinked.

"...Remember what?"

"The... everything."

He gestured helplessly at the photo album.

"The stars."

"The gloves."

"The humming."

"The tape."

"You remembered all of it."

Izuku looked down at the photographs again.

"...I don't know."

He shrugged.

"I just..."

"...do."

Mina leaned closer.

"Okay."

"Pop quiz."

She pointed at another photograph.

"What happened here?"

Izuku smiled immediately.

"That was our first disaster rescue simulation."

"Shoji carried three people at once."

"Iida lost his glasses."

"They were on his head."

Iida adjusted his glasses instinctively.

"...That did happen."

"Kirishima ripped his costume climbing
through a window."

"...Manly sacrifice."

"Jirō accidentally scared Aizawa
because she came up behind him."

"I maintain that was his fault."

"And..."

He looked toward where Toru was standing.

"Hagakure spent twenty minutes helping calm a little boy who wouldn't stop crying."

Everyone looked at Toru.

"...I did."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I'd forgotten that."

Izuku smiled.

"He drew you a picture afterwards."

She felt her breath catch.

"He..."

"...He did."

"I kept it."

The room fell silent again.

Later...

The photo album was carefully closed.

People drifted away in small groups.

Some headed back to their rooms.

Others wandered toward the kitchen.

The conversation gradually moved on to tomorrow's patrol schedules.

Eventually...

Only Izuku and Toru remained.

Neither of them spoke at first.

The quiet wasn't awkward.

Just...

thoughtful.

"...Can we go for a walk?"

Izuku looked up.

"Of course."

The evening air was cool.

The campus gardens were almost empty.

Streetlights cast warm pools of light across the pathways.

Izuku walked with his hands tucked into
his pockets.

Beside him...

Toru's gloves floated gently through the darkness.

"...I'm sorry if everyone embarrassed you."

He said it so suddenly that Toru almost laughed.

"What?"

"Earlier."

"I didn't mean to make things awkward."

She stopped walking.

"...Midoriya."

He turned.

"You didn't."

"...I didn't?"

She shook her head.

"You did the opposite."

He looked even more confused.

"I did?"

She resumed walking.

More slowly this time.

"...Can I tell you something?"

"Always."

She smiled softly.

"When I was little..."

"I used to wonder..."

"...if people remembered me after I left the room."

Izuku's expression fell.

"...Toru..."

"My quirk made that happen
sometimes."

She laughed quietly.

"It wasn't anyone's fault."

"If someone couldn't see me..."

"They'd forget I was standing there."

"They'd lose track of conversations."

"They'd accidentally leave me behind."

She shrugged.

"I got used to it."

Izuku listened without interrupting.

"Even at U.A...."

She looked up at the stars.

"I knew everyone cared about me."

"I never doubted that."

"But..."

She searched for the words.

"...Sometimes I wondered if I was
just..."

Her voice grew quieter.

"...easy to overlook."

Izuku's heart sank.

He'd never imagined she'd carried that feeling.

She stopped beside one of the flower beds.

Then laughed softly.

"And then tonight..."

"You started talking about things I'd
forgotten about myself."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"...They just seemed important."

She turned toward him.

"They were."

"That's why I remembered them too."

A pause.

"But..."

She smiled.

"...I didn't think anyone else would."

Izuku looked genuinely puzzled.

"...Why wouldn't they?"

She laughed.

"Midoriya..."

"You remember everything."

"I don't."

"You do."

She pointed at him.

"You remember people's favourite snacks."

"You remember birthdays."

"You remember who likes studying by windows."

"You remember who gets nervous before presentations."

He blinked.

"...Do I?"

She smiled.

"...See?"

"You don't even realize you're doing it."

They continued walking.

The breeze stirred the trees above them.

For a while...

Neither of them spoke.

Then Izuku quietly said,

"...I've never tried to remember you."

Toru tilted her head.

"...What?"

He smiled.

"I've never had to."

She looked at him.

Confused.

He shrugged gently.

"...You're my friend."

"As far as I'm concerned..."

"...remembering you has always been the easiest thing in the world."

Toru felt something warm bloom in her chest.

It was such an ordinary sentence.

Spoken so naturally.

Without a hint of drama.

Without trying to impress her.

Which somehow made it mean even more.

She smiled to herself.

"...You're unbelievable, Midoriya."

He laughed.

"...I've been told that before."

They continued their walk beneath the
evening sky.

Neither of them noticed...

That Toru's smile didn't fade for the rest of the night.

The conversation stayed with Toru.

For days.

Not because Izuku had said anything extraordinary.

But because he hadn't.

To him… remembering her had been completely ordinary.

To her… it had meant everything.

Three days later, Class 1-A gathered for a joint training exercise.

The briefing had barely begun before
Aizawa divided everyone into teams.

"Midoriya."

"Asui."

"Tokoyami."

"Hagakure."

The four of them nodded.

"Your objective is civilian extraction."

"You'll be evaluated on communication as much as speed."

"Begin."

The mock city quickly filled with shouted
instructions.

Smoke machines reduced visibility.

Alarm sirens echoed between the buildings.

Izuku immediately switched into analysis mode.

"Asui, take the eastern route."

"Tokoyami, roof access."

"Hagakure..."

He didn't even hesitate.

"...Can you scout ahead?"

She smiled.

"Already on it!"

Within seconds, her gloves disappeared around the next corner.

The exercise lasted almost forty minutes.

When it finally ended...

Aizawa called everyone together.

"Overall."

"A satisfactory performance."

He glanced down at his notes.

"However..."

He looked toward Izuku.

"You gave Hagakure more individual instructions than anyone else."

Several classmates looked over curiously.

Izuku blinked.

"...Did I?"

"You addressed her by name nineteen times."

"Oh."

"I didn't realize."

Aizawa closed his notebook.

"Why?"

Izuku frowned slightly.

"...Because I needed her to know I was talking to her."

Aizawa waited.

"...That's all?"

Izuku nodded.

"She couldn't rely on visual cues."

"So I wanted to make sure every instruction was clear."

The explanation was so matter-of-fact that nobody questioned it.

Nobody except Toru.

After training...

She caught up with him outside the changing rooms.

"...Midoriya?"

He looked over.

"Oh, hey."

"Good job today."

"You too."

She walked beside him.

"...Can I ask you something?"

He smiled.

"You've asked me that a lot recently."

"...I have."

"And the answer's still yes."

She looked down at the path beneath her floating shoes.

"...When we work together..."

"You always use my name."

"Mhm."

"You've always done that."

"...Have I?"

She nodded.

"Most people point."

"Or say 'over there.'"

"Or..."

She laughed softly.

"...They just kind of hope I know they're talking to me."

Izuku winced.

"...Really?"

"It happens more than you'd think."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then...

"...That sounds frustrating."

"It can be."

"So..."

He looked genuinely puzzled.

"Why wouldn't I use your name?"

She smiled.

"...Exactly."

He blinked.

"...Exactly what?"

She stopped walking.

"So many people think about my quirk first."

"They're trying to be helpful."

"I know they are."

"But..."

She took a slow breath.

"They'll say..."

"'The invisible girl.'"

"'The stealth specialist.'"

"'The one we can't see.'"

She smiled sadly.

"They describe me."

"They don't always..."

She hesitated.

"...see me."

Izuku listened carefully.

As he always did.

"I've noticed something."

She continued.

"You never say..."

"'The invisible girl.'"

"You always say..."

"'Hagakure.'"

Or...

"'Toru.'"

His answer came without hesitation.

"...Well..."

"...that's your name."

She laughed.

"...It is."

He tilted his head.

"I don't really understand."

She smiled warmly.

"I know."

"That's kind of the point."

For a moment...

Neither of them moved.

The afternoon sun filtered through the trees.

Students wandered past, chatting about training.

The world carried on around them.

Oblivious to the quiet conversation taking place.

Finally...

Toru spoke again.

"...Do you know what my favorite thing
about you is?"

Izuku rubbed the back of his neck.

"I didn't know I had one."

"You have lots."

She giggled.

"But my favorite is..."

She looked directly at him.

Even if he couldn't meet her eyes in the usual way...

He somehow always knew exactly where she was.

"...You make me feel like the easiest person in the world to see."

For once...

Izuku couldn't think of a reply.

Because there wasn't one.

There was only a smile.

Small.

Warm.

Entirely genuine.

And somehow...

That was exactly the answer Toru had been hoping for.

After that conversation… something changed.

Not in Izuku.

He was exactly the same as he'd always been.

It was Toru who changed.

Or rather… she started paying attention to things she'd never noticed before.
Monday morning.

Class 1-A gathered outside Ground Gamma for combat training.

Students chatted while waiting for Aizawa to arrive.

Without looking up from his notebook,

Izuku suddenly called across the group.

"...Toru?"

She blinked.

"...Yeah?"

"You've got a leaf stuck in your hair."

She instinctively reached up.

"...Where?"

"A little further left."

She brushed at the air.

"...Got it?"

"...Almost."

Another try.

"There."

She looked down at the tiny green leaf resting in her glove.

"...How did you even notice that?"

Izuku looked genuinely puzzled.

"...It was moving."

Wednesday afternoon.

The class was leaving the cafeteria.

Halfway across the room, Izuku stopped walking.

"...Toru?"

"Hm?"

"I think you left your notebook."

She frowned.

"...Did I?"

He pointed toward an apparently empty chair.

Sure enough...

Her notebook was still sitting there.

She laughed.

"...Thanks."

"No problem."

Friday. Training.

Aizawa divided everyone into pairs.

"Midoriya."

"Hagakure."

The exercise began.

Within minutes, explosions and shouting echoed across the training ground.

Izuku ducked behind cover.

"...Toru?"

"I'm here."

"Three o'clock."

"Got it."

A flashbang detonated nearby.

Visibility disappeared.

Smoke filled the area.

Most students froze for a moment.

Izuku didn't.

"Toru."

"I'm moving left."

"I know."

He launched himself forward at exactly the right moment.

A split second later, Toru swept an opponent's legs out from underneath them.

The exercise ended almost immediately.

As everyone caught their breath, Sero wandered over.

"...I've gotta ask."

Izuku looked up.

"Ask what?"

"How do you always know where Hagakure is?"

Izuku blinked.

"...What do you mean?"

"You don't even have to look."

"You just..."

Sero gestured vaguely.

"...know."

Izuku thought about it.

"I guess..."

He smiled sheepishly.

"...I've just gotten used to where she is."

That answer stayed with Toru for the rest of the day.

That evening… she found herself sitting on one of the benches outside the dorms.

The sunset painted the sky in shades of orange and pink.

A familiar voice interrupted her thoughts.

"...Mind if I sit down?"

She smiled.

"Not at all."

Izuku sat beside her.

For a while… they watched the sky in comfortable silence.

Then Toru quietly asked,

"...Can I tell you something a little embarrassing?"

"You can tell me anything."

She laughed softly.

"I've spent the whole week trying to work something out."

"Oh?"

"I kept asking myself..."

"...How do you always know where I am?"

Izuku tilted his head.

"I don't know."

"You just..."

He searched for the words.

"...have habits."

She blinked.

"...Habits?"

"Mhm."

"When you're thinking..."

"You tilt your head a little."

"When you're excited..."

"You start walking slightly faster."

"When you're trying not to laugh..."

"Your shoulders shake."

Toru's smile slowly faded into astonishment.

He continued, completely unaware.

"And when we're training..."

"You always circle around to my left before making a move."

"So after a while..."

He shrugged.

"...I just started expecting it."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Izuku finally looked at her.

"...Toru?"

Her voice was barely audible.

"...You've been watching me."

He nodded.

"...Of course."

The answer was so immediate.

So natural.

"...Why wouldn't I?"

She felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes.

Not from sadness.

From relief.

Years.

Years of wondering whether people noticed her.

Years of laughing off being forgotten.

Years of accepting that her quirk sometimes made her fade into the background.

And all that time...

There had been one person quietly learning the smallest things about her.

Not because he was trying.

Not because he felt sorry for her.

Simply because… he cared.

Izuku noticed her expression immediately.

"...Did I say something wrong?"

A watery laugh escaped her.

"No."

She gently reached for his hand.

Their fingers intertwined.

"...You got everything right."

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The evening breeze drifted through the trees.

Above them, the first stars began to appear.

And for perhaps the first time in her life...

Toru Hagakure felt completely, unmistakably… seen.
