Welcome to Camp NMIXX

Summary:

Deep within the mountains lies Camp NMIXX—a place where strangers become best friends, homesick campers find confidence, and summer always feels far too short.

For four weeks every year, six counselors return to the rustic cabins and pine-lined trails that have become their second home. Guided by Head Counselor Haewon's strict organization, Lily's musical warmth, BAE's wild spirit, Sullyoon's calm grace, Jiwoo's unstoppable energy, and Kyujin's comforting presence, the crew is ready to give a new batch of campers the summer of a lifetime.

But between unscripted chaos, shared laughter under the sunset, and unspoken feelings blooming between schedules, this summer might just change the six of them forever.

Chapter 1: Welcome Back to Camp NMIXX

Chapter Text

The first sign that summer had truly arrived wasn't the warmth of the sun or the chirping of cicadas hidden among the towering pine trees. It was the old wooden sign hanging above the entrance.

WELCOME TO CAMP NMIXX

Every year, it greeted hundreds of excited children and a handful of counselors who returned not because they had to—but because this place had somehow become home. Nestled deep within the mountains, Camp NMIXX was surrounded by dense forests, crystal-clear lakes, flower-filled meadows, and endless hiking trails. It wasn't the biggest summer camp in the country, nor the most luxurious. But to every child who had ever spent a summer there...

...it was magic.

For four weeks every year, strangers became best friends. Homesick children found confidence. Camp counselors laughed until their stomachs hurt. And somehow...

Summer always felt too short.

“Head Counselor Oh! The supply truck just arrived!”

Haewon looked up from the clipboard in her hands. “Tell them to unload everything by the dining hall first.”

“On it!”

As the volunteer sprinted away, Haewon glanced across the grounds. Everything had to be perfect before the campers arrived tomorrow morning. The cabins were clean, the lake had passed safety inspection, and fresh firewood was stacked high by the pit. Everything was ready.

Except one thing.

Haewon checked her watch. “…She’s late.”

Again.

She pinched the bridge of her nose. Of course she was.

Right on cue, a loud engine echoed down the mountain road.

A dusty white taxi came speeding toward the entrance, braking so abruptly that a cloud of dirt enveloped the welcome sign. Before the driver could even unlock the trunk, the back door flew open.

A blonde woman stumbled out, practically buried under three oversized bags, a guitar case, two pillows, and an appliance that looked suspiciously like a household rice cooker.

"I MADE IT!"

"Lily."

Lily Morrow froze. Standing twenty feet away with crossed arms was Oh Haewon. Still wearing the exact same expression she'd had every first day for the past four summers.

Disappointed.

"...Hi?"

"You missed the staff bus."

"...I know."

"You were supposed to arrive one hour ago."

"...I know. But I know I am not the only one who's late."

Haewon inhaled deeply. Lily smiled sheepishly.

"But....I brought snacks!"

A beat of silence. Haewon's lips twitched ever so slightly.

"...You're unbelievable."

"I've been told that."

Before Haewon could continue her lecture, another familiar voice rang across the camp.

"LILYYYYY!"

Someone collided into Lily with enough force to nearly send both of them onto the ground.

"BAE!" The two burst into laughter as Bae wrapped Lily in an impossibly tight hug.

"You actually came!"

"Why wouldn't I?"

"You disappeared after Christmas!"

"I was in Australia visiting family!"

"You didn't answer my messages!"

"Oopps... my bad, sorry..."

Bae groaned dramatically. "I missed you, idiot."

"I missed you too."

Haewon watched the reunion from several feet away.

"...You can hug after unloading the taxi!"

"Oh."

The girls looked toward the mountain of luggage.

"...Oops."

"If one of these bags contains another kitchen appliance..."

"It doesn't."

Haewon lifted the heaviest suitcase. "...Why is it so heavy?"

"...Books."

"Don’t tell me you brought twenty books?"

"...Maybe."

BAE opened one bag. "...Lily."

"...Yes?"

"Why do you have three stuffed penguins?"

"They get lonely."

Haewon closed her eyes. "I don't even want to know."

"You really don't."

By lunchtime, the remaining counselors had arrived. Sullyoon stepped out of her car carrying neatly labeled storage boxes. Everything she packed looked organized.

Everything.

Jiwoo arrived on a bicycle for reasons no one understood. "Where's your car?"

"I wanted to save gas."

"...You biked twenty kilometers?"

"...why not?!."

Haewon stared. "...I'm surrounded by lunatics."

Kyujin was the last to arrive. Unlike everyone else, she still looked nervous despite returning for her second summer. The moment she spotted Lily, however, her face lit up.

"Unnie!"

Lily immediately opened her arms. "Kyujin-ah!"

Kyujin laughed as Lily spun her around.

"You got taller!"

"I don't think that's possible."

"No, you definitely did."

"We literally saw each other three months ago."

"Still taller.".Kyujin giggled.

It felt...

Comfortable.

Like coming home.

By late afternoon, the six counselors gathered inside the main lodge for their annual orientation meeting. Haewon stood at the front. "Welcome back, everyone."

Jiwoo dramatically clapped. "We survived another year."

"We're not dead yet," BAE corrected.

"Details." Lily said.

Haewon ignored them. "As usual, we'll review assignments." She pointed toward a large map. "Lily."

"Present."

"Music Cabin."

"My kingdom."

"You are also responsible for morning choir."

"Yay!"

"And please don't lose your campers."

"...Once."

"You lost them twice."

"They came back."

"They wandered into the goat enclosure."

"...The goats were nice."

"They chased the mayor."

"...The mayor was fine."

Haewon closed her eyes, took a long, deliberate breath, and slowly counted to three. Beside her, Sullyoon buried her face in her notebook to stifle a giggle, while Kyujin bit her lip to keep from smiling outright.

"...Just... try not to start an international incident this summer," Haewon muttered.

"I'll do my best," Lily promised solemnly.

"You also said that last year."

"I mean it this time!"

A quiet wave of laughter rippled through the room. Even Haewon’s lips twitched into a reluctant, microscopic smile.

Assignments continued. Sullyoon would lead Arts and Crafts. Jiwoo handled Sports and Outdoor Games. Bae supervised Adventure Activities. Kyujin assisted with the younger campers. Haewon, as always, oversaw the entire camp while coordinating staff, schedules, emergencies, and approximately ninety percent of Lily's accidental disasters. When the meeting ended, Jiwoo stretched.

"One last peaceful evening before tiny humans take over."

"They're not tiny," Lily argued.

"They're fun-sized."

"They're terrifying," Haewon muttered.

That evening, the six gathered outside the dining hall with takeaway dinners balanced on their laps. The sky glowed orange as the sun dipped behind the mountains. For a while...no one spoke. The silence wasn't awkward. It never was. It was the kind shared by people who had known one another long enough that words weren't always necessary.

The breeze carried the scent of pine and fresh grass. Somewhere nearby, frogs croaked beside the lake. The camp felt asleep. Waiting.

Lily looked around. "I missed this."

"So did we," Sullyoon replied softly.

Jiwoo nodded. "City life is exhausting."

Kyujin smiled. "It doesn't feel like work here."

"It never has," Bae said.

Haewon looked at the campgrounds. Then at the five people sitting beside her. "...Welcome home."

No one teased her for saying it. Because they all felt the same.

The next morning arrived with absolute chaos. Two buses rolled through the front gates one after another. Children poured out carrying oversized backpacks, stuffed animals, sleeping bags, and enough energy to power the entire mountain.

Parents waved.

Campers screamed excitedly.

Counselors rushed everywhere.

"Cabin Three this way!"

"Please line up!"

"Don't run!"

"Lunch is at noon!"

Lily crouched down to greet the youngest campers. "Hi! I'm Miss Lily!"

A tiny girl with pigtails looked up nervously. "...I've never been away from home."

Lily smiled warmly. "You know what?"

"What?"

"My first summer here..."

She leaned closer. "...I cried on the first night."

"You did?"

"Mhm."

"...Really?"

"I missed my mom so much."

The little girl's shoulders relaxed. "...Did you have fun?"

Lily smiled. "It became my favorite place in the world."

The girl smiled back. "...Okay."

Behind them, Haewon watched quietly. There it was again. That effortless way Lily could make someone feel safe. It wasn't loud. It wasn't flashy. It was simply who she was. And maybe...

That was why every child who came to Camp NMIXX remembered Miss Lily long after summer ended.

Haewon found herself smiling before she even realized it. Then—

"MISS LILY!!"

Another camper tugged frantically at Lily's sleeve, wide-eyed. "My friend is gone!"

Lily blinked. "What? Who?"

"I can't find him!"

Haewon's soft smile vanished instantly as she marched over. "...Lily."

"Yes?"

"Please tell me you haven't lost a camper in the first five minutes."

"...Technically—"

"Lily."

"I'm on it!" Lily squeaked, turning around—only to see a small boy step out from behind a nearby oak tree, proudly cradling three pinecones and a stick nearly as tall as he was.

"I found a treasure!" the boy announced cheerfully. "For my dragon."

Haewon stared at the boy. Then at Lily. "He moved fifteen feet."

Lily smiled weakly. "...Technically, he was misplaced."

Bae jogged over from the adventure field. "What happened?"

"Missing camper."

Jiwoo whistled. "New record."

"It wasn't even ten minutes," Sullyoon muttered.

Kyujin covered her face to hide a laugh.

Lily looked horrified. "I swear I turned around for one second!"

Haewon sighed toward the heavens. "Welcome back to Camp NMIXX."

Around them, children laughed, counselors hurried across the grounds, and the camp buzzed with the unmistakable energy of another unforgettable summer just beginning.

None of them knew it yet.

By the end of these four weeks, friendships would deepen, hearts would quietly change, and this summer would become the one they would all remember for the rest of their lives.

>★<

Morning sunlight spilled through the towering pine trees, bathing Camp NMIXX in a warm golden glow. Birds chirped from every direction. The lake shimmered peacefully. The smell of pancakes drifted from the dining hall. For exactly three seconds…

Everything felt calm. Then—

“MISS LILY!”

Lily spun around. The same little camper from yesterday stood there, pointing frantically toward the playground.

“I found him!”

Lily blinked. “…You found who?”

“My friend!” Before Lily could respond, a small boy emerged from behind the giant oak tree, proudly carrying three pinecones and a suspiciously large stick.

“I was collecting treasure.”

Lily stared. “…Treasure again?”

The boy nodded confidently. “Well I told you for my dragon.”

Lily just sighed and smiled. “…Fair enough.”

Haewon arrived moments later, slightly out of breath. “Where is the missing camper?”

Lily slowly pointed toward the boy. “…Found him.”

The boy happily waved. “Hi!”

Haewon looked at him. Then at Lily. Then back at the boy. “…He wasn’t missing.”

Haewon sighed so deeply that even the nearby squirrels seemed concerned. “It’s not even breakfast.”

By eight o’clock, every camper had gathered in front of the main stage. Colorful banners fluttered overhead while counselors stood in a line, each wearing matching Camp NMIXX shirts.

Haewon stepped forward. “Good morning, campers!”

“GOOD MORNING, MISS HAEWON!”

“My name is Miss Haewon, and I’ll be your Head Counselor this summer.” She introduced each counselor one by one.

“Miss Sullyoon teaches Arts and Crafts.” Sullyoon smiled and waved gracefully.

Several campers whispered.

“She’s so pretty…”

Jiwoo leaned toward Lily. “They say that every year.”

Lily giggled.

“Mr—I mean Miss Jiwoo is in charge of Sports.”

Jiwoo pumped her fist. “We’re gonna have fun!”

The children erupted into cheers.

“Miss BAE leads Adventure Activities.”

BAE dramatically saluted. “If you’re scared of heights…” She grinned. “…Too bad.”

The older campers laughed immediately.

“And finally…” Haewon looked toward Lily. “…Miss Lily.”

Lily stepped forward. The younger campers immediately gasped.

“She has blonde hair!”

“She’s so pretty!”

“Is that a guitar?”

Lily smiled brightly. “I’ll be teaching music!” She lifted the guitar case. “And yes… we’re going to sing.” A chorus of excited cheers answered her.

Haewon smiled to herself. Music Cabin always filled first.

Every year.

By midmorning, the campers dispersed to their assigned activities.

The Music Cabin sat near the edge of the forest, overlooking the lake. It was Lily’s favorite place in the entire camp. The small wooden cabin smelled faintly of cedar and old sheet music. Colorful paper stars hung from the ceiling. Tiny ukuleles lined one wall. Several guitars rested neatly in their stands. A dusty upright piano occupied one corner.

As the children entered, they immediately looked around in amazement.

“Whoa…”

“So cool…”

Lily clapped her hands. “Welcome!” The campers gathered in a circle on the wooden floor. “My name is Miss Lily.”

“You already told us!”

One little boy laughed.

“I know.”

Lily laughed too. “But now it’s your turn.”

One by one, each camper introduced themselves. Some were loud. Some were shy. One little girl whispered so quietly that nobody heard her. Lily smiled gently. “Can you tell me again?” The girl shook her head. Lily didn’t push. Instead, she picked up her guitar.

“You know what?” Everyone looked at her. “I have an idea.” She strummed a cheerful chord. “Instead of saying your names…”

“…Let’s sing them.”

The campers exchanged confused looks.

“…Sing?”

“Mhm.” Lily sang first.

♪ My name is Lily,

I’m happy you’re here… ♪

The melody was simple. Easy enough for children to copy.

Soon…

One camper sang. Then another. Within minutes, the cabin echoed with laughter. Even the shy girl quietly sang her own name. Lily beamed.

“There you go!”

Outside, Haewon paused mid-stride on the wooden walkway. Bright, uninhibited laughter drifted through the open windows of the Music Cabin. Leaning slightly to peek inside, she saw the entire group gathered on the floor. Even the little girl who had been crying at registration was now clapping along in rhythm.

In the center of it all sat Lily, cross-legged with her guitar, looking at each kid as if they were the most important person in the room.

The tension slowly drained from Haewon’s shoulders. A small, genuine smile softened her face—one she quickly hid behind her clipboard before continuing down the path.

Every single year, Haewon thought. No matter how much chaos Lily brought in her luggage, she always brought the magic with it.

Meanwhile…

Adventure Field.

“WHO’S READY TO CLIMB?” BAE’s voice echoed across the camp. A sea of hands shot into the air. “That’s what I like to see!”

She demonstrated how to wear a climbing harness while making exaggerated jokes that had the children laughing before they even touched the ropes.

Nearby, Jiwoo blew a whistle. “Sports campers!” Half the field instantly became chaotic. Children zigzagged around cones, chased soccer balls, and attempted relay races that somehow ended with everyone laughing on the grass.

Sullyoon’s Arts Cabin was the complete opposite. Peaceful. Soft music played from a speaker while children painted birdhouses and made friendship bracelets.

Kyujin floated between cabins wherever she was needed, helping younger campers tie shoelaces, refill water bottles, and calm first-day nerves.

Everything was running smoothly. Almost too smoothly. Which, in Camp NMIXX tradition…

Never lasted long.

Just before lunch, Lily dismissed her campers with cheerful waves.

“See you this afternoon!”

As the children ran toward the dining hall, Lily looked around the now-empty cabin. She smiled to herself. “I really missed this.” She began putting away instruments one by one. Without realizing it… the lunch bell rang.

And Lily…

Kept working. Completely forgetting to eat.

----

Cold water exploded across the soccer field. Children shrieked with laughter as counselors ran in every direction.

"GET HER!"

Jiwoo darted behind a picnic table just as Lily snatched the garden hose from her hands. "Oh, no you don't!" Lily laughed. She turned the nozzle toward Jiwoo. A stream of water shot through the air. Jiwoo barely managed to duck. Instead...

"...AH!"

The splash landed squarely on Haewon, who had just walked into the field with a clipboard tucked under one arm.

Silence.

Every camper froze.

Every counselor froze.

Even Lily.

Haewon slowly looked down at her soaked camp shirt. Water dripped from her hair, the clipboard, and the papers that were now completely ruined.

Lily's eyes widened. "...I can explain?"

Haewon raised one eyebrow. "Can you?"

"...Not really."

For one long second, everyone waited for Head Counselor Oh to scold them. Instead...

Haewon sighed. Set the ruined clipboard on a nearby bench. Rolled up her sleeves. And quietly picked up the nearest water balloon.

Jiwoo's jaw dropped. "...No way."

Bae gasped dramatically. "Guys..."

"...She's smiling."

"Run!" Jiwoo yelled.

Haewon threw the balloon. It burst against Jiwoo's shoulder with a loud splat! The campers erupted into deafening cheers.

"MISS HAEWON'S PLAYING!".

For the next twenty minutes, Camp NMIXX forgot about schedules. Counselors chased campers. Campers teamed up against counselors.

Even Sullyoon, who had sworn she would stay dry, ended up laughing after a group of younger campers gently splashed her with cups of water.

"Oh, you're all in trouble now," she laughed, scooping water from a bucket.

Kyujin was quickly recruited by the youngest campers as their "captain."

"Protect Miss Kyujin!"

"No, protect the water balloons!" another child shouted.

The entire field became one giant battlefield. And somewhere in the middle of it all...

Lily laughed so hard that tears formed in her eyes.

Eventually, the whistle blew.

"Okay!" Haewon called, still catching her breath. "Everyone, enough!"

A chorus of disappointed groans echoed across the field.

"But we're having fun!"

"I know."

"Five more minutes?"

Haewon looked around at the soaked campers, the drenched counselors, and the puddles scattered across the grass. She couldn't help smiling. "...Five more."

The children cheered. Lily pumped her fist.

"Best Head Counselor ever!" Haewon shook her head, pretending not to hear.

An hour later, everyone had changed into dry clothes. The camp settled into its usual afternoon rhythm. The excitement had worn the campers out. Some napped in their cabins. Others quietly painted with Sullyoon or read books beneath the trees. For the first time all day...

The camp was peaceful.

Lily returned to the Music Cabin. She wiped down the guitars one by one, making sure none of them had been damaged during the chaos. A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Come in!"

Kyujin peeked inside. "Unnie?"

Lily smiled warmly. "Hi, Kyu."

Kyujin walked over, carrying a small cardboard box. "I found these in storage."

She opened it. Inside were old camp photographs from years ago. Lily's eyes lit up. "No way..." She carefully picked up the top photo. It showed the counselors from four summers earlier. Everyone looked so much younger. Jiwoo's hair was much shorter. Bae still wore braces. Haewon looked almost exactly the same—except her smile was a little less guarded. And Lily...

Lily laughed. "My hair was so long!"

Kyujin giggled. "You haven't changed much."

"I've become more responsible."

From outside, Jiwoo shouted, "LIES!" Lily laughed louder.

Later that afternoon, the counselors gathered outside the main lodge while the campers enjoyed free recreation. Jiwoo flopped onto a wooden bench. "My legs are dead."

"You ran for twenty minutes," Sullyoon said.

"I ran from Haewon."

"Fair."

Bae sipped from her water bottle before glancing toward the Music Cabin. Lily was sitting on the porch steps, surrounded by six younger campers. She wasn't teaching. She wasn't organizing an activity. She was simply listening.

One little boy excitedly explained how he'd caught a frog near the lake. Another proudly showed off a friendship bracelet she'd made. Lily reacted to every story as if it were the most fascinating thing she'd ever heard. She laughed when they laughed. She gasped when they gasped. She celebrated every tiny accomplishment. None of it felt forced. It was just... Lily.

Bae smiled without realizing it. "She's good with them."

"The best," Kyujin said quietly.

Sullyoon nodded. "They trust her."

Jiwoo leaned back. "I think they forget she's a counselor."

"They treat her like a big sister," Kyujin added.

Haewon had been silently organizing paperwork nearby. At the mention of Lily, her gaze instinctively drifted toward the porch. She watched as Lily gently tied a little girl's untied shoelaces before patting her head. The little girl beamed and hugged Lily without warning. Lily laughed, hugging her right back. Haewon smiled. A small smile. The kind that appeared only when she wasn't thinking. Bae noticed.

Again.

She didn't say anything. But she noticed.

That evening, dinner was louder than ever. The campers couldn't stop talking about the afternoon water fight.

"Miss Jiwoo cheated!"

"I did not!"

"You sprayed Miss Haewon first!"

"That was Miss Lily!"

"I regret nothing."

The entire dining hall burst into laughter.

As the dining hall buzzed with chatter, Lily offered a sheepish look across the table.

“…Sorry about your clipboard.”

Haewon didn’t look up from her plate. “…It needed replacing anyway.”

“Really?”

“No.”

Lily winced. “I’m really, really sorry.”

Haewon finally looked up, her expression softening into a quiet sigh. “It’s fine, Lily.”

“You’re not mad?”

“I was. Now I just have four hours of ruined attendance logs to retype.”

“I’ll help!” Lily offered instantly, resting her chin on her hands. “I owe you anyway.”

Haewon considered it for a moment, then nodded. “First thing tomorrow morning, then. Don’t be late.”

“Deal.”

Across the long wooden table, Jiwoo nudged Sullyoon. “Did Head Counselor Oh just willingly invite Lily to touch official administrative files?”

Sullyoon smiled knowingly. "That's unusual."

"Very."

BAE looked from Haewon...

...to Lily, who was happily eating dinner, completely unaware. A tiny thought settled in the back of Bae's mind.

Haewon pays a lot of attention to Lily.

She wasn't sure what it meant. Not yet. But it was enough to make her curious.

Outside, the sun dipped behind the mountains, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. The second day of camp came to a close with tired feet, damp shoes, and hearts just a little bit warmer than before. And although no one realized it...

The summer was already beginning to change them.
