Too hot to handle

Summary:

Passing out under the sun amidst a heatwave was already bad enough.

Waking up in pain hours later was definately worse. Now Judar is stuck in bed, glowing bright red, completely miserable, and—worst of all—unable to touch or be touched without his skin feeling like it’s on fire. But seeing Hakuryuu just as miserably sunburnt, equally desperate, and struggling to keep his hands to himself makes the whole painful disaster oddly satisfying.

Notes:

The Juhaku tag is in need of some light-hearted summer fics and it's literally a million degrees outside so let's write that!

Judar sat lazily on his shaded balcony, fanning his face with an ornate silk fan and groaning with every single breath. The heatwave gripping the capital was oppressive—thick, humid, and utterly suffocating.

With a petty flick of his wrist, Judar summoned a floating, glowing orb of blue ice into the air right in front of him. A faint, refreshing breeze drifted off the frost, making him exhale a long sigh of relief.

"I am literally melting," Judar grumbled, leaning back against the daybed cushions.

The door behind him slid open, and Hakuryuu stepped out onto the balcony, his formal tunic already unbuttoned at the collar. He instantly felt the drop in temperature near Judar and let out a soft sigh of appreciation, stepping over to join him.

"How long is this stupid heatwave gonna last?" Judar whined, glaring up at the cloudless sky. "I fucking hate sweating. It’s disgusting."

Hakuryuu sat down beside him on the edge of the bed, gently nudging Judar’s hip with his own. "That's funny. I don't think I've ever heard you complain about sweating before."

Judar smirked, leaning in to catch Hakuryuu's lips in a short, sweet kiss. "Well," Judar murmured against his mouth, his red eyes glinting, "if you're the one putting my body to work, that's completely different. At least that feels good and doesn't make me feel like I'm being boiled alive."

Hakuryuu’s blue eyes darkened slightly, a sudden spark of hunger replacing his exhaustion. Without a word, he swung a leg over Judar’s thighs, straddling the magician's lap completely. "We could have both," Hakuryuu whispered, leaning down until their noses brushed.

Judar let out a breathless laugh, his hands instantly finding Hakuryuu’s waist. "God, I love it when you take initiative."

They fell into a hungry, urgent kiss, the heat of the afternoon completely forgotten. Hakuryuu’s hands moved fast, unlacing the front of Judar’s light robes and eagerly roaming over the bare, warm skin of his chest and stomach. Judar hummed in approval, tilting his head back to give the prince better access to his throat—

Knock! Knock! Knock!

"Your Highness!" a guard's loud voice echoed from the inner quarters. "Pardon the interruption, but Minister Koumei requests your immediate presence in the council room regarding the drought reports!"

Judar groaned loudly, throwing his head back into the cushions in sheer defeat. Hakuryuu froze, his forehead resting against Judar's chest as he let out a long-suffering sigh.

"Tell him I'll be there in a moment!" Hakuryuu called back, his voice tight with frustration.

Judar let his arms flop to the sides, practically limp on his back. "Just go," Judar sighed dramatically, closing his eyes. "Duty calls, Your Highness."

Hakuryuu chuckled softly, but instead of just leaving, he grabbed Judar by both forearms and firmly yanked the protesting magician upright. "Get up," Hakuryuu said, a soft, promising smile on his face as he adjusted his unbuttoned collar. "Don't be like that. We're going to have plenty of time soon. I have three full days off duty starting tomorrow."

Judar’s ears perked up, a smug grin instantly returning to his face. He leaned in close, pulling Hakuryuu down by his lapels until his lips were right against the prince's ear. "Good," Judar whispered, his voice low and wicked. "Because all I want is for us to stay in bed, touching and fucking for three days straight."

Hakuryuu rolled his eyes, though a heavy flush crept up his neck. "I want to bring you out to the lake to go swimming at least once tomorrow," he countered dryly, stepping back from the daybed.

"Fine, fine," Judar nodded, waving a dismissive hand as Hakuryuu finally turned to leave. "Go deal with your boring paperwork."

As the door clicked shut, Judar leaned back against his floating orb of ice, a happy, triumphant smile spreading across his face. Three whole days. No politics, no protocols, just him and Hakuryuu. He closed his eyes, already imagining the absolute perfection of the upcoming weekend.

The next morning, Judar woke up in an exceptionally good mood. Instead of summoning his magoi to float through the air, he lazily wrapped his arms and legs around Hakuryuu, forcing the prince to carry him all the way out to the secluded lake near Rakushou. Despite the oppressive heat already baking the land, Judar couldn't stop grinning, eager to finally dive into the cool water.

The moment they reached the grassy bank, Judar tried to catch Hakuryuu off guard, lunging forward with all his weight to push the prince headfirst into the lake. But, being physically weak compared to a trained warrior, he failed miserably. Judar let out a loud, high-pitched squeal of laughter as Hakuryuu barely budged, effortlessly scooping the magician up into his arms and tossing him straight into the water with a massive splash.

Coming up for air, Judar decided to be devious. He let out a muffled cough, threw his hands up, and let himself sink under the surface, pretending to drown.

Hakuryuu’s eyes widened in instant panic. "Judar!" He dove into the lake after him, splashing wildly, only for Judar to suddenly pop up right beside him, cackling as he threw his wet arms around Hakuryuu’s neck, dragging them both under again.

"You idiot!" Hakuryuu wiped the water from his face, though he couldn't hide his smile as he held Judar secure against his chest.

"Hey! Look at the two lovebirds!" a shrill, teasing voice called out from the shore.

Judar swam over, resting his elbows on the grassy bank and squinting up. Kouha was standing there, a smirk plastered on his face, with a thoroughly exhausted-looking Koumei trailing behind him in his heavy robes.

"I would love nothing more than to completely ruin your day," Kouha declared proudly.

"You won't succeed, squirt," Judar rolled his eyes, blowing a strand of wet hair from his face. "What are you two even doing here?"

Kouha pouted, crossing his arms. "Our family has spent their summers cooling down at this exact lake since we were kids! You don't own the lakes of Rakushou, Judar."

"Whatever, stay if you want," Judar huffed, paddling back out.

After an hour of swimming, the heat began to turn their energy into pure lethargy. Judar hauled himself out of the water, dried off, and stretched out lazily on a large woven blanket laid over the grass. He propped his head up on his hand, closing his eyes as a blissful wave of exhaustion washed over him.

Koumei, sitting under the faint shade of a nearby tree, glanced over and frowned. "Judar, do not fall asleep in the open sun like that. You'll burn."

Judar didn't even bother opening his eyes; he just lazily flipped Koumei off with his middle finger.

Hakuryuu crawled onto the blanket beside him, rubbing his sore eyes and letting out a long, bone-deep yawn. Days of non-stop state affairs had finally caught up to him. "Judar... wake me up in a few minutes, alright?" Hakuryuu murmured, his voice thick with sleep as he collapsed onto his back.

"Yeah, yeah," Judar hummed. He shifted over, draping half of his body comfortably on top of Hakuryuu's chest. But as the warm breeze blew over his damp skin, Judar’s eyelids grew impossibly heavy, and within moments, he accidentally drifted off into a deep slumber right beside his fiancé.

Seeing them both passed out, Koumei sighed and stood up to rouse them. But Kouha quickly extended his arm, blocking his older brother with a devious grin. "Don't you dare," Kouha giggled softly. "Messing with Judar is hella fun. Let me have this!"

Koumei rubbed his temples, weighed the effort against the quiet peace, and ultimately gave in. "Fine. But you're dealing with his temper later."

Hours passed. The sun climbed to its peak and began its descent, blistering the earth below.

Judar slowly stirred, a strange, prickling heat radiating across his entire body. He shifted—and instantly gasped out loud, a sharp, searing pain shooting across his shoulders, chest, and legs. It felt like his skin had been peeled off and replaced with hot coal.

"Ow! What the fuck?!" Judar hissed, sitting up sharply.

He looked down at his arms. His skin was a bright, angry, throbbing red—except for a few pale, untouched outlines on his torso where he had been resting against Hakuryuu.

Judar looked around, realizing the sun had moved drastically. Koumei and Kouha were nowhere to be found. "Those little bastards!" Judar cursed loudly, his voice echoing over the quiet lake. "They ran off and left us to fucking burn!"

He frantically shook Hakuryuu's shoulder. "Ryuu! Get up! Wake up!"

Hakuryuu groaned, wincing as he opened his eyes, his own face and neck glowing a fierce crimson. "Ugh... Judar? What time is it?" He looked at Judar’s red skin and immediately frowned. "I told you to wake me up! Why did you fall asleep?!"

"Don't scold me!" Judar bickered furiously, backing away as even the air moving against his chest hurt. "Whose fault was it, huh?! You were the one who made me sleepy in the first place by snoring! And the fucking sun is to blame anyway! It attacked us!"

By the time they trudged back to the palace, both of them were grumping, hunched over, and moving at the speed of turtles to avoid their clothes rubbing against their raw skin.

Kouha was waiting in the courtyard, practically rolling on the floor with laughter the second he saw them. "Oh my god! Look at you two! You look like cooked lobsters!"

"I will make you pay for this," Judar snarled, his red eyes burning with absolute hatred. "I swear to God, Kouha, I'm going to freeze your hair off tonight!"

"Oh, I am so sorry, Judar-chan!" Kouha squealed in mock remorse. Before Judar could react, Kouha darted forward, throwing his arms around Judar in a tight, dramatic hug.

"AGHHH! GET OFF ME!" Judar yelled in sheer agony, the friction against his sunburn feeling like a thousand needles. He violently shoved Kouha away, breathing heavily as he clutched his own chest.

Suddenly, Judar froze. His red eyes widened in absolute, horrifying realization. He slowly turned his head to look at Hakuryuu. Hakuryuu was clutching his own sunburnt arms, his expression equally pained and tense.

If Kouha touching me hurt that much... Judar thought in pure panic, that means touching Hakuryuu is going to hurt too!

"No," Judar whispered, horrified. "No, no, no!"

Completely abandoning his revenge on Kouha, Judar aggressively stormed off into the palace corridors, yelling at the nearest servants to fetch pounds of cooling aloe vera paste immediately to 'fix him.'

Half an hour later, Judar sat on the edge of his bed in nothing but loose trousers, slathering the thick green cream over his chest. "Ow! Fuck! Shit!" he whimpered, flinching with every swipe. The cream was cool, but the sheer act of spreading it over his blistered skin sent waves of agony through his body.

The door slid open, and Hakuryuu stepped in, similarly coated in cream and looking utterly miserable.

"This is a nightmare," Judar whined, dropping the bowl of paste. He looked at Hakuryuu’s lips, desperation instantly overriding his common sense. "I don't care. I need a kiss. We have three days off, we are doing something."

Hakuryuu swallowed hard, nodding in desperate agreement. "Just... be gentle."

Judar stood up, taking a tentative step forward. He leaned in, his lips meeting Hakuryuu's in what was supposed to be a passionate kiss. But the second Hakuryuu instinctively reached out and rested his sunburnt hands on Judar’s bare waist, a shared shock of blinding pain shot through both of them.

"OW!"

"AH!"

They instantly recoiled, springing apart like two opposing magnets. Judar hit the edge of the bed, his face twisted in agony as he clutched his side, while Hakuryuu cradled his hands against his chest, biting his lip so hard it almost bled.

Judar lay flat on his back, panting softly as he and Hakuryuu stared blankly up at the wooden beams of the ceiling.

"Fuck," Judar moaned, his skin still humming with that awful, prickling heat. "How long is this shit gonna last? I wanna touch you."

"Me too," Hakuryuu said, his voice laced with pure, quiet defeat. "I think... a few days? Maybe two? A week?"

Judar turned his head sideways, looking utterly disappointed, though surprisingly he didn't even start complaining. "Of course," he muttered bitterly, staring at the canopy. "All that time off, just wasted..."

He quieted down for a second. As much as he had been wildly eager to touch Hakuryuu, Judar didn't want to seem desperate—like he only cared about sex, or that they couldn't actually have a good time together without it.

"Wanna... do something else?" Judar asked softly. "I mean, better make the best of it. Let's play chess or something."

"Hm," Hakuryuu hummed, closing his eyes as a faint, appreciative smile touched his lips. "You're right. It can't be helped. But... I was really looking forward to... you know."

"Me too," Judar admitted, a sudden, familiar glint returning to his eyes. "God, I'd do the absolute worst things to you right now if I could."

Hakuryuu opened his eyes, turning his head to smile back at him. "Like what?"

Judar instantly grinned, pointing an aloe-covered finger at him. "You're horny!" Judar laughed, thoroughly delighted. "Admit it! Ha! I'm glad I'm not the only one pissed off about this whole situation."

"Believe me," Hakuryuu let out a short, breathy huff, "you're definitely not."

Judar tapped his chin thoughtfully, his chaotic mind already hunting for loopholes. "I could... try riding you?" he suggested, leaning up slightly on his elbows. "I mean, technically we wouldn't be touching that much, right?"

Driven by sheer determination, Judar groaned through his teeth as he carefully sat up, trying to hover over Hakuryuu to shift onto his torso. But the second Judar’s thighs even brushed the side of Hakuryuu's bare waist, a sharp, searing wave of heat shot through both of their sunburns.

"FUCK!" Judar yelped, instantly collapsing backward onto his side.

"AH—shit!" Hakuryuu hissed, tensing up and clutching his ribs.

For three long seconds, they both lay frozen, nursing their respective burns and staring at each other in utter disbelief. Then, Judar let out a loud, breathless snort. Hakuryuu bit his lip, but a crack of laughter escaped him, and within seconds, both of them were laughing uncontrollably—stuck lying side-by-side on the bed, agonizingly desperate, and completely defeated by a goddamn sunburn.

Over the next two days, Judar and Hakuryuu were forced to keep their hands entirely off each other—and unexpectedly, it was Hakuryuu who got the ultimate payback for all the times Judar had tried to tease and seduce him in the past.

Hakuryuu found immense, petty satisfaction in moving just close enough to Judar, hovering his warm hands millimeters above Judar’s skin without actually touching, whispering dirty, detailed promises directly into his ear about everything he was going to do to him the moment they healed.

Judar had to practically bite his own tongue off, telling Hakuryuu to just let it go and get his mind off the topic. But underneath his loud groans of exasperation, Judar felt immensely proud and intensely desired. It was blatantly obvious that Hakuryuu was suffering from the forced abstinence far more than he was, his dark blue eye burning with an unsatisfied, desperate hunger every time he looked at the magician.

By the afternoon of the third day, Judar officially snapped.

"That's it. I am fucking done with this," Judar declared, slamming a hand against the mattress. "I don't care if it hurts."

Before Hakuryuu could react, Judar lunged across the bed, aggressively grabbing both sides of Hakuryuu's face and pulling him into a deep, ravenous kiss.

They pressed into each other, bracing for the inevitable shock of blinding pain—only for seconds to pass in total silence. Judar slowly parted from his lips, both of them staring at each other in wide-eyed realization.

The heat was gone. The raw, prickling sting was completely finished. It didn't hurt anymore.

Without wasting a single microsecond, both of them tore their tops off and threw them onto the floor. Hakuryuu flipped Judar onto his back, shoving him deeply into the soft mattress and pinning his hands above his head.

Judar grinned up at him, his red eyes flashing with pure triumph. "Finally."

Knock! Knock! Knock!

"Your Highness!" a guard's voice echoed loudly through the heavy door. "Forgive the intrusion, but your three days of leave have ended! Minister Koumei requires your immediate attendance for the council meeting!"

Judar groaned loudly, letting his head drop back into the pillows in sheer defeat. "Talk about deja vu," Judar sighed, rolling his eyes as he looked up at Hakuryuu. "Your free time is over, I guess. Go do your stupid work."

Hakuryuu stared down at Judar for a single, quiet beat, his chest heaving. Then, without a word, he got off the bed, walked straight over to the door, and yanked it open.

"Tell Minister Koumei that I am completely unavailable for the rest of the week," Hakuryuu said coldly to the stunned guard, before slamming the door shut, sliding the heavy iron latch into place, and locking it tight.

Judar’s jaw dropped in utter surprise.

A wicked, breathless grin broke across Judar's face as Hakuryuu turned around, stripped off his remaining clothes, and climbed straight back into bed, pulling Judar tightly into his arms.

Judar eagerly grabbed hold of his partner, throwing his legs around Hakuryuu’s waist and pulling him down for a kiss. "Damn, Ryuu," Judar whispered against his lips, his heart hammering in delight. "That was so hot... now that's the kind of heat I actually like."
