Softer Promises Fulfilled

Summary:

I promised they'd get to play toys in this series, so Kyana and VR-LA get to play with toys and later figure out how napping with an uncomfortable mechanite body would work.

Notes:

Finally, big brother VR-LA fluff...

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kyana turned the newly given turtle plushie over in her hands, fittingly dubbed Lime to watch with Lemon, her yellow cat plushie, examining the slight glimmer to the fabric of the shell, wondering if it was just for fun or if it was perhaps meant to be a particular species, a shiny turtle could certainly fit into just about any plane. Unlike Lemon, who was full of beans, he was entirely stuffed with fluff, stuffed so heavily his limbs couldn't be moved, but allowing him to stand perfectly.

The door to her room opened, drawing her attention away from the brand new plushie, VR-LA stepping in and shutting it behind him, looking up at her with eyes that immediately brightened at seeing what was in her hands. "Dani let me know she's headed into town with Vhas for supplies, she told me to let you know too." He moved over, sitting on the floor next to Kyana. "Do you like the turtle?"

Kyana nodded, setting the turtle down in front of her. "Yeah, he's cute! I really like him. He's got caring eyes."

VR-LA did a confused little head tilt before nodding, choosing to agree instead of questioning it. "I guess he does!" He answered, causing Kyana to giggle a bit, not sure if what else to say herself as she placed Lemon into Lime's back, the cat plush just slowly sliding into laying down, perfectly sized to fit. VR-LA watched the action, seeming to contemplate it. "...are you regressed, Kyana?"

Kyana paused as well, hands slightly in the air, processing the quest. "I..." Kyana trailed off, thinking even harder, before then giving a quick nod.

VR-LA reached over slowly, awkwardly ruffling her hair a bit like he was unsure if it was okay to. "Our plans can wait until tomorrow then. Do you... Want to stay in here? Everyone else is gone, so if you wanted we could go test the cookbook we got."

Kyana picked up both Lemon and Lime, passing Lime over to VR-LA. "...play with me?"

"Are you sure?" VR-LA said, even as he took Lime from her hands. "I doubt I'll be very good."

"You're already good." Kyana said, leaning into his side, her face against the fabric of his upper arm, feeling the uncomfortable metal frame beneath against her cheek.

VR-LA hesitated briefly. "Thank you, Kyana."

Kyana hummed out a little "mhm," brows furrowing as she started to think a bit harder. Despite wanting to play, she still wasn't exactly sure how to, drawing was easy, reading or letting VR-LA read to her was easy, but most of the time playing with Lemon had been moving Lemon around or making Lemon dance.

"Do you want to tell a story with them?" VR-LA offered, seeming to notice her plight.

"Yeah!" Kyana agreed eagerly, giggling a bit. "Lime can be a monster and Lemon can be a hero fighting him!"

"Oh? What kind of monster is Lime?"

 "A turtle one, obviously!"

That got a bit of a snort from VR-LA before he nodded. "Obviously. Perhaps a dragon turtle then." He suggested.

 Kyana blinked a few times.

"...I'll show you one in a book next we're out and about. What kind of hero is Lemon?"

"Okay!" Kyana agreed, before humming in thought, crossing her arms. "A magic one, like you!"

VR-LA made a little sound at that, but when Kyana looked he seemed to be perfectly fine, his eyes just bright like they were when he first entered the room. Kyana giggled, watching as they brightened even more, feeling warm at knowing what that meant.

-

Kyana had quieted down after a while, their game coming to a close as she couldn't think of how she wanted to continue, letting out a long yawn that made her eyes water slightly. VR-LA paused in his efforts of cleaning up the various things that had been used in their game, books set up in a makeshift castle to house some unknown treasure that had needed stealing, and offered her an awkward pat on the back. "Do you want to nap?" He asked.

Kyana's brows furrowed as she thought about it, before nodding.

"Want me to leave you be so you can then?"

Kyana shook her head rather quickly and immediately. Seems she's run out of energy for words too. VR-LA thinks the word for that was verbal shutdown? But he couldn't quite remember. Kyana looked between her hammock and VR-LA, expression implying she was thinking rather hard. Then, she stood up, retrieving her blanket off her hammock and sat on the floor by the wall, patting the floor next to her.

VR-LA tilted his head a bit, but gave up on his cleaning entirely in favor of shuffling to be next to her, looking down as she folded her blanket in half and put it over his shoulder. "Oh, did you want to lean on me..? I don't think that will be very comfort even with-" He shut up promptly at Kyana's expression, eyes wide and sad at the possible rejection. "Why don't you let me grab some more blankets for this?" He corrected himself instead.

Kyana removed the blanket from his shoulder, holding it in her lap as she watched him stand up. He moved about as quickly as he could to retrieve some spare blankets Finbar had left behind from storage, mainly a very heavy quilt and a more simple fluffy blanket. When he sat back down, he offered them both out. "Maybe we can put the quilt over me since it's fairly thick and you'll be more comfortable?"

Kyana seemed appeased by this, and VR-LA watched as she decided upon what to do with the blankets, helping with her silent direction of mostly pointing. The quilt was wrapped entirely around him, the fluffy blanket then tossed over his shoulder half folded to act as a pillow of sorts, and Kyana's own blanket went around her own shoulders.

As Kyana got comfortable with her head on his shoulder, VR-LA used his other hand to reach for one of the books, knowing he'd be stuck here for a while. Not that he minded.

"Rest well, Kyana. I'll be here when you wake up."
