Work Text:

Subspace was many things, she was the greatest mind in Korblox’s science division, probably the greatest mind in the Inpherno itself, if she dared to inflate her ego that much.

But, Subspace.. Wasn’t a gardener, it was fact, anything she touched usually withered and died in the span of an hour. She didn’t know why– It’s not like she was Ghostwalker himself or anything.. It just happened, she didn’t have it in her nature to be able to care for something living, something thriving… Nothing ever thrived near her, she made people worse.

She dragged down those she loved to their lowest, and then used them to climb back up to her peak, she was selfish, she didn’t care for anyone- Except for her.

Vine Staff.

Vine Staff was a beautiful thing, an Inphernal of genuine beauty, she was careful, she was elegant– She was everything that Subspace could never be, she wanted to be jealous of her, because how dare someone be better than her?

No matter how much she wanted to hate, wanted to let jealousy and bitterness cover her soul– She just couldn’t… She admired the other Inphernal, admired how her pink-tinted curls draped down her spine and framed her beautiful, slightly plump cheeks. It was sickening, Subspace didn’t know someone like her could exist in this hellbent world, she watched as Vine Staff’s hands gracefully danced around each leaf, she watched as the bulkier Inphernal giggled and looked over at Subspace, expecting something to happen, but nothing ever really did.

Subspace was just. Silent, sitting there with her hands folded over her lap, studying. Observation was an important part of the scientific method after all.

Right, Science! She was very, very good at science, and another part of the scientific method was questioning; So, Subspace leaned closer, pointing at Vine Staff’s hands, which were cupped into a v-shape as she dug into the dirt. ‘’ Your hands. ‘’ She started, leaning closer, her arm giving out for a moment, before she caught herself with a barely audible squeak. ‘’ .. Why are you doing it like that? Isn’t it easier to use a shovel? ‘’

Vine Staff looked over at her and laughed a little, eyeing the smaller Inphernal’s posture. ‘’ Well, darling, it would be easier. But I prefer feeling the soil beneath my fingernails, the moistness and texture of the dirt tells you a bunch about the healthiness of the environment! ‘’ She then reached over and poked Subspace’s side, causing the other to wobble. ‘’ You’ll fall sideways if you keep leaning over the planter like that.

‘’ Tch.. Well.. What if I /want/ to fall sideways, what then?! Huh? You gonna judge me? Call me names? Call me stupid? I don’t think so, Missy! I’m the greatest inventor alive toda- ‘’

Vine Staff cut her off.

‘’ … You don’t have to do all of these theatrics if you just want to help out, yaknow. ‘’

‘’ .. Oh. ‘’

‘’ It’s okay, dearest! Just put your gloves on and then you can help out, I don’t want you getting an infection or anything. ‘’

Subspace seemed confused, tilting her head as she looked Vine Staff up and down. ‘’ .. What gloves? ‘’ She questioned, sitting criss-cross applesauce now, her hands hidden between her legs.

Vine Staff blinked once– Twice, before she started laughing. ‘’ Right! I never gave you gloves! I’m sorry, love, I’ll get those for you right now. ‘’ And just as quickly as she spoke, she stood, rushing off into her apartment to probably wreck a drawer somewhere.

Subspace was left alone.. She didn’t like being alone, so she stared at what Vine Staff had been replanting; A sapling, a gentle, plum-colored thing with barely mature leaves that rustled in the soft wind. It honestly pained Subspace, seeing how gentle she was with everything, even such a young sapling, she wondered if Vine Staff was good with newspawns.

… Why was she thinking about that? Subspace shook her head, displeased with her train of thought, bringing her hand up to rub her only functional eye before she yelped, falling over onto her side with a pained groan, her own frailty betrayed her once more, she couldn’t rely on Gamma anymore, the poor Biograft had been decommissioned when she ran away from Blackrock.

.. It took a lot for her to run.

She didn’t want to remember that.

So, pathetically, she laid on the ground, waiting for Vine Staff to come back, hoping, praying, that she’d come back, that she hadn’t abandoned her like everyone else in her horrible life had.
