August 1st, Partner Appreciation Day.
A holiday almost always means a day off for agents. Rarely do these days take place at headquarters, but that doesn't mean they never happen. Throughout the building, agents were running around showering their partners with gifts, letters, and treats.
Owen leaned back in his chair, hands behind his head, and sneered. He observed that basically only those in the Investigation Department celebrated this holiday. Of course, agents in other departments could also have partners, but they were the exception, not the norm.
Usually he wouldn't care much for details like these; instead he’d beam at the mention of an upcoming holiday and cherish all his time off. Yet with all the recent major changes, he found the celebration of long-term partnership laughable.
To quote Oksana, “No one ever sticks.”
Owen spun his seat to face the breakroom just to be reminded that even she doesn’t work here anymore. Shoot, most of the people he’d been familiar with were gone now. He had been used to change like this, but ever since Oprah left for her promotion as the Big O, he felt as if every loss was piled up onto his back all at once.
Being one of the few veteran agents left at this precinct, he knew better than to dwell on the past. It provides nothing but emotional fatigue, and a lot of it at that. Still, it felt unfair to him how some agents have partners that stick around when everything else changes, while others don’t get that privilege. The closest thing he had to a permanent co-worker was Ms. O, and even she didn’t last.
There’s gotta be something I can do that isn’t reminiscing…
