Work Text:

Tears stream down his face as he cradles the small child in his arms. This can’t be happening. Not his husband, the one who’d fought five people after they said something derogatory to the two of them. Not his husband, who’d survived multiple car crashes with barely more than a broken bone. Not his husband, who’d been the single survivor of a freak accident at his previous workplace. Not his husband. He can’t be dead. Not when he’d sworn for forever in their vows. The baby whimpers, fingers curling into her father’s shirt. She’s never going to meet him. She looks just like him too, down to the exact expression he used to make when sad. He wants to scream. To cry. To just.. Not be here anymore. A hand gingerly lands upon his shoulder. “Giyuu..?” a small voice rasps. “Is my brother.. Dead?” Giyuu turns back. Genya, face streaked with tears. “I don’t.. I don’t like this..” he whispers, voice high and scared. He sounds smaller than he looks. “I don’t like it either. Come here, kid.” Giyuu murmurs, stroking the boy’s hair as he hugs him. “Don’t squish your niece.” he whispers, shifting the baby. Genya nods silently, body shaking with every sob. “It’s okay. We’re.. We’re okay..” Giyuu whispers, though tears drip down his chin into Genya’s hair. Genya’s fingers curl into the man’s shirt, his shoulders shaking as he sobs harder. “No.. we’re not okay.. I- i’ll never be okay again!!” he’s gonna get tears all over Giyuu’s shirt. Giyuu gently shushes him, running his fingers through the boy’s hair. He gently sways, the baby in his arms starting to cry. “No, no.. shh.. Shh..” Giyuu whispers, shifting her closer to his chest. “I’ll call Mitsuri to get you. She’ll take you to her house and pick Muichiro up from my place, okay?” Giyuu whispers, gently pulling back from his hug with Genya. The young boy nods, wiping his eyes. “Okay..” he whispers hoarsely, eyes watering violently.

He leans on Muichiro’s shoulder, tears staining the other boy’s shirt. He’s hardly breathing, the small breaths he can manage hitching violently. “Genya.” Muichiro murmurs, fingers linking with the taller boys. “You’ll be okay.” Genya hiccups. “No.. I'll never ever be okay ever again..” he whimpers, wiping his nose with his sleeve. Mitsuri pipes up from her position in the drivers’ seat. “Don’t do that, it’s disgusting.” she says, looking back at both boys through the rearview mirror. Genya nods. “Sorry.” he rasps, sniffing slightly. Mitsuri sighs. “You don’t have to be sorry, okay? Just.. don’t do that with your sleeve.” she murmurs, reaching back to pat his leg. She pulls into her home’s driveway, turning back to the two boys in her car. “Hey. I know this is really hard for you. I’m sorry it had to turn out this way.” she whispers, gently rubbing Genya’s thigh. He just barely manages to smile at her, not reaching his eyes. “Thanks Mitsuri..” he murmurs, looking up at her through his eyelashes. His vision is slightly blurred as Muichiro helps him up and out of the car, into the gently falling rain. He stumbles slightly as his boyfriend hooks an arm around his waist. “It’s okay, you’re okay, everything will be okay.” Muichiro whispers, gazing at Genya with his just-short-of-uncanny wide-set eyes. He gently presses a kiss to the taller boy’s hand, soft and sweet. Both boys walk together slowly and carefully to the door of Mitsuri and Shinobu’s house, Shinobu wrapping a soft blanket around both kids’ shoulders. “Come on, get out of the rain. You two are soaked.” she smiles, patting them both on the head. Genya’s entire body shudders as he cries, Muichiro gently rubbing him on the back. He’s guided to a chair by the smaller boy, curling up against his side. “You’ll be okay, I promise.”
