Work Text:
Roy always drove the squad.
It wasn't a rule. It wasn't written down anywhere. There was nothing in the regulations about one part of a team being a designated driver. It just… ended up being that way. And Roy and Johnny were both comfortable with it.
Sure, Johnny drove the squad when Roy was the man in the ambulance. Or if someone was subbing for Roy. And there was the very rare actual switch up where Roy was sitting in the passenger while Johnny drove.
But most of the time, Roy sat behind the steering wheel while Johnny took care of the log sheet or navigated with the map book.
It worked for them.
So well that Chet had given a double take when he was picked up for a fishing trip and Johnny was behind the wheel. Didn't matter that it was Johnny's Land Rover, it just wasn't something Chet was used to seeing if Roy was also there.
Maybe it was their habit of always having the same driver on the clock that led to Johnny being the driver off the clock.
That wasn't a rule either. Nobody had come out and said who should drive when and where. It just… ended up being that way.
Johnny always picked Roy up for an adventure on a day off, and Roy sat in the passenger side, in charge of snacks. And they liked it that way. Besides, Roy's stupid little sports car was tight and uncomfortable when the both of them tried to squeeze in.
As long as they got where they were going, it didn't matter who was behind the steering wheel.
