Work Text:
Jabber and Zanka were never good friends- they argued, had fist fights, nearly killed eachother on the daily. They also joked around alot, though Zanka's aloof demeanor. But beneath all of that was a burning love, it had been spreading through through the two of them like fire. Except neither of them had confessed, they continued with their arguements and fist fights. Zanka thought Jabber had hated him and never wanted to confess- Jabber thought the same way.
This had really got to Jabber, he thought Zanka wasn't kidding when he said things like "just shut up already," and "you can't stop smiling can you?" The truth was, Zanka had been joking too, it was just hard to tell.
One evening, Jabber had snuck to the cleaners headquarters, "Oh Mr. Bad Attitude, I know you missed me." He came into Zanka's room and sat down on his bed. "Not a bad place you have here," Jabber said glancing around.
Zanka- who was about to leave his room, had turned around finally noticing him. "You cant just break into headquarters idiot," Zanka said rubbing his face.
"Aw Mr. Bad Attitude isn't happy to see me?" Jabber said sounding sad but still smiling.
"Leave." Zanka said firmly
"But why?" Jabber said dragging the last word.
Suddenly Zanka said something that hurt Jabber terribly. "Why do you wanna be around me so much? it's almost like you obssessed," Zanka said before smacking him down. Jabber didn't answer. Instead, he escaped with a frown replacing his usual smile. Zanka wanted to follow, but to conceal his affection he turned to leave his room
"What happened?" Rudo asked, "you look upset."
"It's nothing," Zanka said reluctantly turning to look through the window Jabber came from. "I'm going on a walk."
───────
Jabber was sitting on the edge of a railing, his thoughts consuming him. "I can't believe i let myself fall for someone he doesn't even like me," he said with a small chuckle. The sun was starting to set making the ocean look darker than usual. "It'll be better for everyone this way," he said letting go of the edge. Little did he know the one he was longing for was walking along the same path he decided his last word would be on.
He then felt a pair of hands clasp over his wrist.
"Jabber..?" It was Zanka, his face looked like he had been crying angerly and his hair was all messed up.
"Oh... Mr. Bad Attitude has come to save me," he said with a small smile.
"You... You idiot.." Zanka said avoiding Jabbers eyes. "why would you do this," he said sounding shaken
Jabber stopped joking, his smiling fading aswell, "i... i like you. i love you actually."
"Jabber..." Zanka said still avoiding eye contact.
"i- i did this because i though you hated me..." Jabber frowned
"i couldnt hate you," Zanka mumbled turning his head to hide his red face.
"what was that?" jabber said smiling again. "really!?" his excitement got the best of him and he hugged zanka tightly, almost pulling him into the sea.
"woah, be careful," Zanka said hugging him back. "lets not die tonight."
jabber laughed, a hearty and happy laugh. "who knew Mr. Bad Attitude could be such a softie." he hopped over the edge and hugged Zanka again. "I really thought you hated me," Jabber said into his shoulder.
Zanka patted his back, "i love you too you know, now lets go on a walk to talk this out."
"Okay!" Jabber said happy to spend time with Zanka.
───────
They were walking through the now darkness in silence. "So you really almost ended your life because you thought i hated you?" Zanka said sad he had made someone feel that way.
"Yeah.. but its all good now!" Jabber said.
"Im so sorry," Zanka said.
"Its okay, Im glad you found me, this way?" Jabber said gesturing to a cross walk.
Jabber pressed the button to start the signal and the two of them walked freely- because the crosswalk had signaled it was okay to go, right?
Instead halfway through Jabber saw a car heading straight for Zanka, "Jab-"
"ZANKA LOOK OUT," Jabber had rushed infront of the truck, pushing Zanka away. There was a loud crunch. Then silence. Then a car door opening and screaming.
Zanka turned around to see a man sitting next to jabber- who was coved in blood. His right leg was lopsided and his forearm had been completely torn. His face was peaceful, bloody, but peaceful.
"Jabber..?" Zanka said shakily. He fell to his knees next to jabber. Zanka started tearing up, not sad, but angry. Angry that he had let the person he loved die. "Wake up jabber," he said angerily, "wake up and tell me your joking."
"Im- im sorry, i think.... i think hes gone," the man who had hit him said.
"how did you not see us," he responded coldly a hand hovering over jabbers body, wanting to hold him but scared.
"i-im sorry," the man said visibly shaken.
"no your not," Zanka said looking at the man.

When jabber arrived at the hospital, the nurses tried to hide their mortified faces, he looked worse then before. The blood dried up and his face was pale, "he's beyond saving," one nurse mumbled to another.
Once they told Zanka, he went beserk, a rudo amount of beserk. "He can't be gone, its impossible, we just made up." he shouted more, anger purely taking over until...
He finally collapsed, crying as he attempted to cover his face, wiping away tears. "he can't be gone..."
