Horizon (2019)

Summary:

[Fair Warning: I made this when I was 15 so it's veeeery not good]
In 1911, railroad tycoon Samuel Hammond and engineer Wells Josie developed something incredible: The world's first Diesel Locomotive! But after mishap and disaster, they're contracted by the government to deliver a shipment across the nation. However, after a very odd detour along the way, their lives are changed more than a locomotive ever could have.

Notes:

I originally wrote this when I was 15 so it's like- very much not good. I just put it here as an archive in case any curious souls want to read my awful teenage fiction.
I do want to refresh this story though because I do like a lot of the concepts and the universe, it just deserves a better written story.

Chapter 1: EAR-2212 | July 17, 1911

Chapter Text

July 17th, 1911 is a date I will forever remember.
That is because, on this day, my door swung open and Wells walked in.
“Sam, you will not believe what I just got in the mail.” She exclaimed.
Wells was the most skilled engineer at my company, Horizon Transportation, if not perhaps in the entire world.

“Holy crap, something important enough to send up to me? That’s never happened.” I said sarcastically.

“Okay sure, some things may not be as important as others… but I can say that this is important enough.”

“How many other times I’ve heard that one.”

“Ha ha ha I get it.” She laughed sarcastically. “But before you make more judgment calls, look at just what I got in the mail.”
She put down a rolled up blueprint.
I unrolled it and looked at the title.

‘Distilled Oil Locomotive Engine’
I was taken aback. She had actually brought me something of importance. “Is this what I think it is?”

“Oh yeah. Its an oil engine.”

I quickly got over my surprise. “I want you to take this to the shops and test it. Build prototypes. Benchmark them. See just how good this blueprint is.”

“Oh, of course I was always going to do that. I wouldn’t be a very good engineer if I wasn’t”

“Good, I just wanted to make sure. Who even mailed that to you?”

“No name was listed. Only the address '2212, Catherine Dr.'”

“That’s somewhat suspicious…”

“Yeah that’s true. Though it all looks right.”

“Then go do that testing. As well as some investigation. perhaps on top of that.”
“Definitely will do.” Wells said, walking out of my office.
