Jealousy

Summary:

When CatNap spots DogDay with a pretty cat, he grows jealous and begins to wonder if he isn't enough.

Work Text:

CatNap didnt think much about it when he first noticed it. The faint scent of blackberries in DogDay was strange, but didn't mean much to him. Though he didnt recognize it. He knew that some of the people DogDay worked with were critters, and the ones that weren't tended to wear perfumes. But he couldn't remember any critter having a blackberry smell, so he figured one of the older human ladies that liked doting on DogDay must have changed their perfume.

That was the most likely and logical explanation. That was why DogDay had been smelling so much like blackberries as the days passed. That is what he told himself because if he didn't, he would be forced to acknowledge the underlying scent of another cat that clung to his best friend's fur. Something that he really didn't like. Not at all.

CatNap was helping Bobby with some shopping that she had to do. They were in the town's shopping district, and between the two of them, they were carrying quite a large number of bags and small boxes.

“Thank you so much for helping me out, CatNap,” said Bobby, huffing as she did her best to hang on to all her bags. CatNap said nothing, simply giving a small nod before yawning. He was feeling a bit sleepy.

“After we get back to my place, we can have some tea and cookies. Picky taught me this new recipe and…” CatNap didn't hear the rest of what Bobby said. Too busy looking at something, or rather someone, across the road.

While walking, CatNap had picked up on the familiar and comforting scent of vanilla with the underlying smell of dog. He sniffed the air, looking to find where it was coming from, and as he thought, across the road from him, sitting on a table outside a cafe was DogDay.

A smile made its way onto his face simply by seeing his best friend. He was laughing, waving his arms around, ears flapping, tail wagging, as he pointed at the screen of his laptop. CatNap let out a small giggle; whatever it was, it was clearly very exciting if he was moving so much. When he turned to look at who DogDay was talking to, well, he honestly didnt know who to expect.

Maybe he expected one of his coworkers, the ones CatNap knew about, and had seen whenever he came to town. Maybe one of the sweet older human ladies, or maybe a spiderling like Miss Long Legs, or literally anyone else. But what CatNap saw was another cat. And maybe under any other circumstances it wouldn’t have bothered CatNap as much as it did now, but she had the same smell, the one he had been picking up on DogDay lately. The same blackberry smell.

Having noticed that she was talking to herself and that CatNap was no longer behind her, Bobby made her way back, doing her best not to bump into anyone. Thankfully, that didn't happen, and she made her way to CatNap with no accidents.

“CatNap, you can't just leave me talking to myself like that; it's rude.” She lightly scolded. But CatNap wasn't listening to her; his focus was on the two across from him. Bobby noticed this and turned to look in the direction CatNap was staring at.

“Oh, it's DogDay and…hmm. I don't think I recognize the girl he's with. But whoever she is, she’s really pretty.”

She is, CatNap thinks rather sadly. The cat with DogDay was black with long fur that looked really fluffy and well-kept. CatNap noticed that two green leaves were peeking out right behind one of her ears, and a couple of berries were growing on her tail.

She was also tall. She was smiling widely, listening intently to whatever DogDay was saying, but also replying, matching DogDay's excitement with the way her tail flickered back and forth or the way she would clap her paws. It looked like they were having fun.

CatNap looked down at his own tail. Long, thin, and limp. The other cat had a long tail too, but hers was fluffy and reminded him of a feather duster, moving with so much life, unlike CatNap’s. He frowned. CatNap’s tail was also way longer. He didnt like that.

CatNap felt his already bad mood worsen when the other cat scooted her chair closer to DogDay and rubbed her cheek against his, nuzzling him. CatNap let out a small hiss, a wisp of poppy gas escaping, before he flinched back.

Why…why did he do that? There was absolutely no reason for him to have done that. Luckily, no one had heard or seen him do that. That cheek rub meant nothing. And yet it felt like it did. He tightened his grip on the boxes he was carrying. CatNap should be the one with DogDay right now, not that black cat. He wanted to be the one sitting and chatting with him. The one laughing and having a good time with him. That should be him, not her.

His frown deepened. Why was he feeling like this? Over something so simple and unimportant, something so insignificant. He wouldn't lie, though; he felt a bit of relief when DogDay moved the cat away from him, laughing and waving her off.

Bobby, who had been watching the whole exchange, turned to look at CatNap. He was frowning, tail limp, ears drawn back, eyes trembling with confusion, sadness, and something else.

“Hey, CatNap.” She moved to block CatNap’s view. “Let's have a slumber party, ok?”

Nighttime rolled around, and Bobby was finishing up prepping the drinks for the slumber party. In her room, Crafty, Hoppy, and Picky were all gathered in a small circle with pillows, blankets, and their sleeping bags.

As she grabbed the drink tray, her ear twitched at the ding coming from her door. She put the tray down and ran to the front, opening the door, revealing a certain purple feline. She placed her paws on her sides, clenching and unclenching them. She wanted to hug CatNap, but held back since the feline wasn't very fond of physical contact. So instead, she eagerly motioned him in, “Come in, come in, CatNap. Imma go grab the drinks; you go to my room, ok?”

CatNap made his way to Bobby’s room, surprising the three girls.  “CatNap, what are you doing here?” Crafty asked.

“Yeah, dude, unless it's a group sleepover, you don't have to help us sleep during slumber parties.” Hoppy reminded him.

“But since you're here, want some?” Picky asked, grabbing a bag of chips, offering them to CatNap.

CatNap kindly shook his head; he wasn't hungry. Bobby then walked in, carrying the drinks, and made her way to the circle, CatNap following behind her. They both sat down, and Bobby placed the tray in the center.

“Ok, I know everyone must be a bit confused—”

“Yeah, no kidding, Bobby. Why's CatNap here? I thought this was a girls-only slumber party. No offense.” Hoppy remarked. CatNap shook his head. He wasn't offended; he was also confused.

“Well, if you let me explain, Hoppy. I will tell you. "

Fine. They waited for Bobby to continue. Bobby took a deep breath. Then looked at everyone with the most serious face they had ever seen her with. “I’ve gathered you all here tonight for a very important matter…" They leaned further in, in anticipation. “And that matter is…DogDay is CHEATING on our poor CatNap.” She yelled out, pointing at CatNap.

“WHAT!!!”

Before any more yelling and screaming could continue and before the feline could question anything, Bobby raised a paw. “Before you ask any questions, let me explain.”

And so she did; she gave a summary of what she and CatNap saw earlier in town. The other listened intensely, and once she finished, they began to scold her.

“Bobby, girl, that’s not cheating,” Picky said, shaking her head, hoof on her forehead.

“Yeah, Bobs, I thought for a moment that our leader and friend here were dating,” was what Hoppy said.

Bobby laughed, rubbing the back of her head. “Look, I know that's not cheating, but it made things sound more interesting. Sorry.”

CatNap, on his part, was just sitting there, his face a deep purple. Him? And DogDay? Dating?

“So then what's the real reason for this?” Crafty questioned, mildly confused.

Bobby looked at CatNap, smiling, “The truth is our sweet little lavender kitty here is … jealous.”

CatNap turned to look at Bobby so fast a crack could be heard. He gave her an incredulous look, tail straight and bristled, face only turning darker. He wasn't jealous.

The others nodded and remarked on how that made more sense, seemingly agreeing with the red bear critter. CatNap frantically shook his head, while Hoppy and Picky simply snickered. Crafty stared in awe. What could this other cat have that would make CatNap feel threatened by her?

Bobby giggled under her breath. “I guess you're right. You're not jealous.” That’s right, CatNap was not jealous. He did not get jealous. Didn’t matter what Bobby or MistKit said. CatNap was not a jealous cat. He laid his head down on the pillow in front of him.

“ It's not like her rubbing her cheek against DogDay and trying to snuggle up on him means anything.” Bobby continued, “Anyone can do that.”

Yeah…that was true. Anyone could do that. Rubbing cheeks was a way many creatures showed affection. Many critter types did it, humans as well, and it was normal for cats of any kind to do it. It was normal. It was a clear sign of affection between friends. That's why he and DogDay do it often because they’re friends. Best friends. He placed his paws on the pillow, getting a bit more comfortable.

“You know what, CatNap, you're right,” Picky added. “ You’re not jealous. Ya can’t be. Because a jealous cat would be more upset about the fact that her trying to snuggle up on DogDay probably also means she wants to snuggle up with him in…his…sleep.” Picky smiled proudly, peeking in CatNap's direction. That should make him talk.

Rip.

Everyone froze when they saw the tears on the pillow CatNap was lying on. His claws had dug themselves into the fabric when he clenched his fingers, ripping it. They also got a little nervous with the dark look CatNap had made. His mouth formed a thin line, his ears were pinned back, and his tail lashed widely behind him. His normally round pupils turned into slits. Clearly, Picky's words struck a nerve in a way they didn't expect.

Sleep with him. The other cat wanted to sleep next to DogDay. Picky was right. If the other feline was snuggling and nuzzling DogDay, that meant that she probably wanted to sleep next to DogDay and cuddle with him. And maybe he wanted to cuddle her too. And if he did, CatNap wouldn’t blame him. The other cat looked way fluffier and softer than him. Her fur was obviously well-kept; he could tell there wasn't a single knot in it. It also shone brightly in the light.

CatNap looked at his own fur. While he did his best to always keep it clean and free of knots, his didn't shine as brightly as the other cat’s did. Nor was it as fluffy as hers; it probably wasn't as soft either. Is that why he let her snuzzle him? No, that couldn't be the reason.

Bobby, Crafty, and sometimes Hoppy would rub their cheeks against DogDay’s as a way to show affection. And it didn't mean anything. It also never bothered him either. But when he thought about the other cat doing it, it did bother him. It felt more deliberate. Maybe the other cat liked DogDay and was letting him know by doing so, and he was accepting it. That had to be why DogDay smelled so much like blackberries lately.

DogDay probably liked her too. Probably more than he liked CatNap. Maybe he didn’t want CatNap anymore. DogDay found a prettier, softer cat to snuggle with. One that wasn't as lazy or tired as he was. One that matched his energy better than him.

CatNap's face softened as tears began to well up. “I… I’m…not… enough…not good…enough…” They looked in surprise. CatNap spoke. He actually spoke. But he spoke so softly and quietly that they almost didn't hear him.

Bobby bit her lip. CatNap was crying, crying because of them, because of her. And he spoke because of their teasing. The first time they heard him speak, and it was out of sadness, sadness caused by them.

“He… doesn't…love me…any…more…” he silently sobbed. He flopped back onto the pillow, meowing helplessly. The 4 girls all shared a sad look; Bobby and Picky looked especially guilty. They had simply wanted to tease their friend and hopefully get him to admit that he was jealous. But instead all they did was make him cry.

Bobby stood up from her spot and sat next to CatNap. She hesitated before placing a paw on his back, gently stroking his fur. CatNap tensed up, but relaxed after a bit. Bobby noted how soft CatNap’s fur was. Like clouds, she thought.

“CatNap…I’m sorry. I didn't mean to make you cry…” She looked down at her lap. “ I shouldn't have teased you like I did.”

Picky made her way over too. She didn't touch CatNap, only sat in front of him. She placed a hoof on her chest. “Me too. I shouldn’t have teased ya either. I didnt mean what I said.”

CatNap sat up with a sigh. ‘ It’s fine.’ He was no longer crying.

“What? CatNap its not—” CatNap raised a paw, interrupting Bobby's argument. ‘Even if you guys didn't mean it…it still doesn't change the fact that DogDay most likely likes her. And…as his best friend, I should be supporting him, not…being like this…’ He sighed, rather defeated.

Everyone stayed silent. Everyone but Crafty, who quietly and carefully said, “But…we don't know if DogDay actually likes her.”

This caught everyone’s attention. Crafty was right. They didn't know if DogDay actually liked this girl. They had only seen one interaction, and only Bobby and CatNap saw it. They didn't know what they were talking about or what their relationship even was.

“Crafty, you’re right. We don't know.” Bobby exclaimed.  “And excuse me for saying this, but I think it is rather dumb and silly of us to think that DogDay would like someone more than CatNap. Including you, CatNap.”

“Seriously, we should have more faith in DogDay. He isn't the type to just replace someone, especially his best friend. And as said, best friend, you should know this, CatNap.”

“And another thing. You. Are. Enough, CatNap. Never say you aren't.” She finished, squeezing the feline's cheeks.

CatNap looked away. While he did feel better, it still didn't change the fact that CatNap felt the way he did. As much as he didn't want to admit it, whether aloud or to himself, he was, in fact, jealous. The other cat was better than him. He lowered his gaze, and his ears dropped. ‘Then what do I do?’

They all thought for a moment before Bobby spoke up, “Well, I think you should—”

“Spy on them,” Hoppy yelled.

“Huh? What? No, Hoppy, we shouldn’t—”

“No, this is perfect. Like we said, we don’t know if DogDay likes this girl, and we don’t know what their relationship is, so let’s spy on them to see how to fight back.”

“Fight back?” Crafty tilted her head, not understanding.

Bobby tried to argue against Hoppy, but was blatantly being ignored. “Listen here, the idea is that we find more info about this girl DogDay’s been hanging around and try to see what she’s like so we can make a counter plan to get our leader to pay CatNap here more attention.”

“And remind him that he doesn’t need another cat because he has CatNap, and CatNap’s his best friend.”

Bobby gave a tired sigh; she really thinks CatNap should just talk to DogDay. If he knew how the feline was feeling they could figure this out easier and faster. But by the looks of it, everyone was on board with Hoppy's plan. Even CatNap thought he did look a bit nervous, if she were to guess by the way his tail moved.

With that in mind, they all decided it was time to sleep. Bobby crawled into her sleeping bag, hoping that tomorrow would go well.

The following day began like any normal day. Kinda normal. When midday rolled around, the girls all surrounded CatNap to wake him up. Or try. Waking CatNap up was normally DogDay’s job, but CatNap was here for the slumber party, and they couldn't ask DogDay for two reasons: the first was that it meant bringing him here, and that could ruin their plan, and the second was that the canine was busy with work anyway.

They all stood around CatNap, watching the feline sleep soundly. Bobby was thankful that CatNap had managed to sleep despite what happened yesterday. The 4 girls looked at each other, wondering how they should wake him and who would do it.

CatNap was notoriously difficult to wake. He was an incredibly sound sleeper, and normal means rarely, if ever, worked. It made waking him up difficult when you also tended to grow impatient and eventually gave up.

There was also the fact that CatNap didnt take well to being woken up. Whoever woke him up was usually met with some serious murderous intent, followed by hissing and sometimes scratching and biting. If lucky, CatNap would just ignore you, but would make his disdain clear.

DogDay was the only one of the critters who had no problem waking CatNap up. And by that, they didn't mean that CatNap woke up easily when he did it; no, they meant that DogDay was the only one of the critters to have no issue dealing with the consequences. The glare and hissing did not faze him in the slightest. The biting and scratching, he walked it off like it was nothing, laughing and smiling. The annoyance thrown his way, he found it cute, actually.

So yeah, DogDay was the only critter brave enough, stubborn enough, and in Hoppy’s humble opinion, dumb enough to continue waking CatNap up. But they weren’t DogDay, and they still needed to figure out how to wake him up.

Picky suggested shaking him. Hoppy thought of picking him up and throwing him. Bobby reminded her that violence wasn't an option. Plus, that would only anger him, and both options involve touching CatNap, something that he wasn’t fond of. ( Which reminded her she really needed to apologise for touching him yesterday.) Maybe yelling at him as loud as possible could work. While they argued about what to do, Crafty lifted her hoof. She would do it; she would wake CatNap up. The three older girls looked at her with worry.

Was this really something she wanted to do? Was she sure she could do it? Crafty merely nodded, a serious look on her face. Bobby, Hoppy, and Picky all backed up, standing behind Crafty as she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Her horn sparkled with magic, and soon CatNap was sparkling as well. She lifted him carefully out of his sleeping bag into the air. She once again took a deep breath, chest puffed and…

Started to violently shake him. “WAKE UP, CATNAP!!!” she yelled as loud as she could, before unceremoniously dropping him onto the pile of blankets and pillows. CatNap fell with an oof, head rattling. He sat up, holding on to it, as he tried to recover from the dizziness. Once he was ok, he glared and pouted at Crafty.

‘Rude.’ was all he said. The older girls just stared in shock, impressed with Crafty. The unicorn just giggled, while CatNap stretched. Crafty was not sorry or regretted anything.

“Well, since you’re now up, CatNap,” Bobby confidently began, “ I guess it’s time to start our spy mission.” Even though I think you should talk to DogDay instead. But no one had listened to her suggestion.

The 5 friends sat on some benches in town, identities hidden with some fun accessories such as glasses, hats, and coats. CatNap was honestly not sure how this could hide who they were. Wouldn’t people recognize us by our scents? he thought. Also, he really didn’t feel comfortable spying. He side-eyed the girls, Don't you guys have jobs to do or something?

They were sitting right outside the community center, where the planning committee and organizers for the upcoming summer solstice festival were meeting. They were here hoping to see if DogDay and the cat, whom they learned was named Mackenzie, would be there.

They had been lucky to spot the feline earlier while searching for her, and Picky had recognized her. While she didn't know her personally, she saw the feline often at events as the cat volunteered quite a lot. She was also 18 yrs of age and had graduated recently from high school.

“She must have joined the planning committee not too long ago. And with how much experience she has, I'm not surprised they hired her so quickly.” Picky said, shrugging.

Hoppy threw a fist in the air. “Look, is she pretty? Yes. And is she accomplished? Also yes, but she is not DogDay’s type. And even if she likes DogDay, he wouldn't be interested in her in the slightest. Also, she's like younger than him. So we really have nothing to worry about.”

Picky nodded confidently at Hoppy's statement. The other three critters stayed silent. Bobby just sighed, rubbing her forehead, and CatNap and Crafty shared a look. Neither of them reminded them that CatNap was also 18.

CatNap stared ahead. Why was he so bothered by this? He wasn't interested in DogDay romantically; he was just CatNap’s best friend. But for some reason, DogDay being with someone else, having some other cat other than him, did bother him. Especially when that cat was clearly better than him. She wasn't only pretty; she was clearly just the more impressive one of the two.

Based on what Picky said, she was pretty accomplished and well-liked if she got hired on the spot. Unlike CatNap, who didn't do much; sometimes he helped with putting the kids at the town's daycare to sleep. But that was it. That wasn’t even his job or anything. He just liked helping others rest. Everything he learned about her just kept pushing the idea that she was just better than him and that DogDay would like her more.

The opening of a door and the sound of chatter brought them back to their goal. They watched as people walked out of the building and scanned the group, trying to find orange and black fur among them.

Then they spotted them: by the rear back of the group was DogDay…and the cat Mackenzie. CatNap tensed up when he saw the other cat get once again close to DogDay, but thankfully DogDay ran a bit ahead before turning back to walk backwards while still talking to her and the other person with them.

When they were a good distance from them, Hoppy jumped off the bench. “Alright, let’s go, team!”

The group was taking a bit of a break from following the dog and cat. Bobby sat with Crafty on one of the tables inside a cafe, while Picky, Hoppy, and CatNap were in line to order their drinks and food.

Bobby was staring out the window, thinking about how to help CatNap. It was clear to her that CatNap's jealousy was more than just Mackenzie being another cat, but how could she bring it up to him?

“Um, Bobby?”

“Oh, yes, Crafty?”

Crafty fidgeted in her seat. “I’ve been wondering, what is our goal, exactly?"

“What do you mean, Crafty?”

“Well, you see”, Crafty placed her hoof on the table, drawing little circles, “ Our initial goal was to follow Mackenzie, right? And to learn more about her, so we can find a way to make DogDay pay more attention to CatNap…but I was thinking…”

Bobby motions for her to continue after she pauses. “ The thing is, DogDay hasn’t really been treating CatNap differently. He still spends all of his free time with CatNap; he’s always with him, and when he’s not, it’s usually with one of us… and that was before we knew about Mackenzie, and she's been working on the committee for a while now…”

Crafty brings her hooves together. “If DogDay really liked Mackenzie, wouldn’t he…wouldn’t he be going to her in his spare time? To spend time with her? But he doesn’t, so he probably doesn’t like her…”

Bobby smiled softly at Crafty. “Bingo, you are correct, my dear Jasmine. I do think Mackenzie might have a crush on him, but I don’t think DogDay likes Mackenzie romantically. He might like her as a friend, or she’s just a coworker he gets along well with.”

Crafty listened as Bobby spoke, saying that she noticed how, despite Mackenzie’s advances on DogDay, he didn’t really seem all too comfortable with them. Whenever the girl tried to move in closer to DogDay, he always put space between them right away. He didn't return her affection at all.

“Whenever one of us does it, DogDay happily returns the affection. But when she does it, he immediately puts a stop to it. You could argue that it could be because he hasn’t known her for long, but DogDay is very affectionate and friendly. When he and I first met, and even while still getting to know each other, he never shied away from any form of affection I would give him. Hugs, cheek rubs, even the occasional cheek or forehead kiss.”

“But none of that was ever romantic, only friendly. Plus, remember DogDay was in a relationship at the time, but neither he nor Fudge ever saw it as something other than that, and there were still boundaries in place.”

“I think DogDay knows that Mackenzie likes him, and is definitely putting those boundaries up. He doesn’t pay too much attention to her unless it’s work-related.”

That’s most likely what they were talking about yesterday, she thought. His excitement might have been about something about the festival.

She brought up how earlier, during their spying, when they followed DogDay, Mackenzie, and another critter that was with them into a small accessory shop. They were talking with the owner, who wanted to sell some stuff during the festival. While DogDay talked to the owner, the other two with him were looking at a table with multiple items on it, probably writing down what could and could not be sold at the festival.

Bobby had noticed Mackenzie grab a nice choker, placing it around her neck, asking DogDay if he thought it was nice, but was subtly trying to get him to comment that it would look nice on her. DogDay had politely said that the choker was nice, but didn’t say anything else after. Bobby had felt a bit sad for her, but it was clear that DogDay wasn’t interested.

“Ok… but if we know that DogDay doesn’t like her, and clearly still prefers and likes CatNap, what do we do? We can’t make DogDay fall in love with CatNap; that would go against what Hoppy said. CatNap is two years younger than DogDay.”

“What we do is help CatNap regain his confidence. CatNap isn’t just jealous; he’s feeling insecure.”

“But why would CatNap feel insecure? What reason would he have?” Crafty just couldn’t think of anything. CatNap was a bit shy, sure, but he always seemed so sure of himself. Since their first meeting, she had always seen him like that, so for him to be anything but was strange for her.

“CatNap, if I had to guess based on what I noticed and what he said yesterday, he probably feels that Mackenzie would be a better fit for DogDay because of how similar they are, and he might think that her physical qualities are also better than his.”

Physical…qualities? Crafty felt her face turn pink. Bobby just let out a small laugh. “ She has a nice shiny coat that looks very soft and fluffy, don't you think? And she's very pretty and tall. A tall, pretty girl.”

“CatNap might feel that the way he is, the way he looks, might not compare. So as his friends, we have to remind him that not only is he enough as he is, but that DogDay loves him as he is.”

“Oh, I see… you’re really perceptive, Bobby.”

“I’ve had lots of experience.”

Eventually, their friends arrived with their orders. While eating, they talked about what their next move should be, along with other things, just to keep the mood from being too sad. While doing so, Bobby kept thinking about how to bring up the subject of jealousy but also to apologize to him.

“Everyone, I would like to make a suggestion,” Bobby said, clapping her paws together. They all turned their attention to her. “ I think we should stop following DogDay and Mackenzie around. We’re not really going to learn much by following.”

“So what do you suggest we do, Bobby?  We can’t and will not abandon CatNap like this.” Hoppy said.

“And we’re not. Listen, here's what we’ll do…”

A picnic. Bobby’s suggestion was a picnic. Something simple, something that he could do. The idea was for CatNap to take DogDay some lunch when he was on break, so that they could spend some time together.

(Bobby hoped this would ease CatNap's worries by showing him that DogDay liked CatNap as he was and enjoyed his company.)

They met at Picky’s the following day, splitting into two groups. The first group was Crafty and Hoppy, looking through some cute and pretty accessories for CatNap to wear.

(Bobby thought it might help CatNap gain a bit of confidence in his physical appearance if he wore something nice.)

The next group was her, Picky, and CatNap. They were going to prepare some food for CatNap to take on the picnic. They prepared sandwiches, some spring rolls, sliced fruit, and some cold beverages. CatNap suggested they add some of DogDay's favorites: peanut butter cookies. Picky more than happily agreed.

Once the food itself was ready, Bobby and Picky made sure to pack everything while CatNap was led to the living room to see what Crafty and Hoppy had chosen. They decided that the best accessory for CatNap to wear was a cute ribbon that was sparkly orange and purple, which they tied into a bow on the side of his neck. Looking at himself in the full-body mirror Picky had, he…he honestly felt really nice. The orange and purple faded well into each other, the sparkles reassembled stars and reminded him of how the sky looked during dusk. When the stars were beginning to appear as the light from the sun began disappearing.

On the knot of the bow, Crafty had attached his pendant, so now it looked more like it. He continued to look at himself, wondering if DogDay would think he looked pretty like this. He looked at how his fur looked; Hoppy and Crafty had brushed it before putting the ribbon on him, so his fur now had a nice shine to it, and it looked much softer than usual. He hoped DogDay liked it as well.

The girls cooed and gave him multiple compliments, remarking on how cute he looked, and just fawned over him. It really helped him feel better.

“Guys, before we go, can I be given a moment with CatNap? There are some things I like to talk to him about.” Bobby asked, looking at CatNap.

The other three nodded, though they didnt understand. Maybe she just wanted to give CatNap some words of encouragement. They walked out of the living room and into the kitchen.

Bobby moved to stand in front of CatNap. “Firstly, I want to apologise again for the other night, CatNap. I really didn't mean to tease you like I did. I wanted you to admit your jealousy, but I know I should have gone about it differently. I also wanted to apologise for touching and grabbing you without your permission.” Bobby bowed her head. “ I really am sorry, CatNap.”

CatNap smiled softly at Bobby. ‘Thank you for the apology, Bobby. I know you didn’t mean it. And as for the touching and grabbing, I forgive you as well, but please ask next time, okay?’

“Of course,” she said, returning the smile.  I also think you should talk to DogDay and tell him how you feel.”

CatNap averted his eyes. “CatNap, he won't make fun of you or judge you if you tell him.”

CatNap gave a heavy sigh but nodded. He supposed he could talk to DogDay.

“ Good. There's one more thing though.” Her smile dropped, and Bobby looked CatNap dead in the eyes. “ CatNap, I need you to listen and listen closely to what I'm about to say…”

“Is your jealousy toward Mackenzie really because she’s another cat, or is it about something else? Would you have cared as much if she had been anyone else?”

‘I don't understand.’

“ What I’m trying to say is, if she had been another dog, a rabbit, or even a human, would you have gotten jealous? You never bat an eye at anyone showing DogDay affection before. So why her?”

“Is it because you know that she likes DogDay? Is that what's affecting you so much, that not only did you get jealous but also felt the need to compare yourself to her?

CatNap stood frozen. Paws clenched. He wanted to say that it was because she was another cat, and no other reason. That he was worried that DogDay preferred her over him because of that. That because she was another cat, it made the difference all too apparent. It was just because she was a cat.

“Look, you don’t have to give me an answer; you don't have to tell me anything at all.  Not today, not ever. Just…think about it. Try to see if there is another reason as well.”

CatNap nodded, still unsure of what Bobby was trying to say. After a small moment of silence, Bobby cleared her throat. “Well, shall we?”

CatNap stood in front of the community center, the basket held by his tail. Behind him, by the benches, were the four friends. He turned to look at them, and they all encouragingly motioned for him to go in. Right. He slowly made his way to the entrance. It was fine for him to go in; there was no meeting, and everyone would be going on break for lunch. DogDay would be on break for lunch. Making his way in, he looked around, but couldn't find DogDay.

“Oh my, are you lost, dear?” CatNap felt himself jump at the sound of a voice. Quickly turning, he found the voice belonged to an older human woman. The woman crouched down, gently smiling at CatNap. “Now what is a pretty kitty such as yourself doing here?”

CatNap brought the picnic basket forward and pulled his notebook out. ‘I'm here for DogDay. I’m a friend of his; my name's CatNap,’ he wrote down. CatNap's ears were drawn back. He really didn't want to talk with this lady. The woman giggled to herself and told him to wait here, and went to fetch DogDay for him.

CatNap waited by the entrance, still tense and on alert. He really didn't like big, crowded, and loud places. It's why he didn't really come to town much to begin with and why he preferred the valley. His ears swiveled at the smallest of sounds, and his eyes scanned the crowd. He leaned against the wall, arms crossed. To anyone who didnt know him, he might have looked relaxed and bored, but he wasn't.

“CatNap! Hey!”

CatNap straightened up when he heard DogDay’s voice. Before he realized it, DogDay had wrapped his arms around his neck, hugging him, and rubbing his cheek against his. Without a second thought, CatNap wrapped his own arms around DogDay, returning the gesture, relaxing.

DogDay pulled away to look at CatNap but did not let go. “CatNap, what are you doing here? Don’t get me wrong, I’m more than happy to see you, but I know you don't like coming to town. Also, you looked so tense.”

CatNap didn’t answer; instead, he brought the basket forward. “Oh. Are you telling me we're going on a picnic?”

He nods. DogDay's tail wags rapidly behind him. “Ok, let’s go.” He grabs CatNap’s paw, and they both leave the building together.

“By the way, the bow looks real cute on you, Naps.” CatNap’s ears twitch in joy.

The two best friends decide to have their picnic at the park. They are in a more secluded area, farther away from most paths or playgrounds, so not a lot of people are present, underneath a tree with nice, cool shade.

They eat and talk, and CatNap finds himself feeling better than he did the past two days. DogDay comments on the cookies. How he had wanted  CatNap to make them again for him. He was surprised DogDay remembered he made them before.

“How could I forget the first gift you ever gave me? Especially when it’s connected to the first time you acknowledged me as your friend. Or the fact that it was on the first day you let yourself be so close to me. If anything, it only made these cookies even more my favorite.”

As embarrassing as it was, and it really was embarrassing, CatNap felt happy at DogDay’s words. But even with DogDay with him and paying attention to him, he still can't find himself feeling relieved. And he can’t place why. He puts his sandwich down, ears dropping, frowning.

DogDay notices and asks him what's wrong. He looks at DogDay, trying to think of what to say. When he opens his mouth, the other cat appears.

“DogDay, there you are. I’ve been looking for you everywhere.” She giggles, voice light and sweet. This was the first time he had ever heard the other cat’s voice. It was nice. And loud, louder than his.

“Oh, hey Mackenzie. Why were you looking for me? Did something happen at the center?”

She shook her head. “No, I just wanted to ask you if you wanted to have lunch together?” She had sweetly asked, fluffy tail coming forth to wrap itself in front of her. CatNap’s own tail wrapped itself around his leg as he scooted closer to DogDay. Don’t go with her. Please don't go with her. Please don’t.

“I appreciate the offer, but I’m having lunch with CatNap,” he motioned toward CatNap, who had now placed himself next to DogDay. “ He’s my best friend, and I haven’t been able to spend much time with him lately.”

The other cat turned to look at him, now aware of his presence. She stared at him, and he stared back, the two trapped in a stare-off, one that he didn't intend to lose. He grabbed DogDay’s arm, hoping that the other cat would get the message and leave. She was the first to look away, instead staring at the ground nervously.

“Oh, I see. Then maybe I can join the two of you.” She said with a shy, sweet smile. DogDay hummed. And CatNap’s grip on his arm tightened. “I’m sorry, Mackenzie, but I really want to spend it with just CatNap.”

“Oh…oh, ok. Um, maybe at another time then?”

“Sure, we’ll have to make sure to invite the entire group. The more the merrier.” DogDay says, tail slightly wagging.

“Right. We’ll see you…later?” she says, a bit dejected, but CatNap can see a bit of hope in her eyes.

DogDay nods. “Bye.”

With a small wave, the other feline leaves, and CatNap and DogDay are alone once again. His hold on his friend's arm loosens, but he doesn’t let go, and he doesn’t raise his head to look at him either.

An orange paw enters his vision, and he raises his head to see DogDay brightly smile at him. “Come on, let's go home.”

At DogDay’s, CatNap sits on the couch. DogDay is on his phone making a call. He’s not sure what it is about; he just told CatNap to sit. CatNap plays with one of the tails of the bow; he found it to be a great way to de-stress. His tail twitched while he waited for DogDay to finish.

He heard DogDay hang up and made his way to sit next to him. “ I called work and told them there was an emergency at the valley, so now we can spend the rest of the day together.”

‘Is that ok?’ He asked

“Yep. So, you want to tell me what’s bothering you?”

What? CatNap stared at him with wide eyes. He shook his head frantically. Nothing was bothering him, so why was he asking that?

DogDay gave him a look. “Ok then, you want to tell me why you and the girls were following and spying on me yesterday?”

CatNap looked at everything but DogDay. He knew, he knew, of course he knew. Why would he? He probably picked up their scents.

“Yup. I caught your scent, all 5 of you,” DogDay said, tapping his nose, confirming CatNap’s thoughts. “ I picked up all your scents very easily, especially your CatNap.”

“CatNap, why were you guys following me, and it wasn’t just me. You guys were looking at someone else too, weren’t you?”

CatNap fidgeted with his tail, looking at his lap. He remembered what Bobby had said about telling DogDay how he felt; also, it wouldn’t be fair for DogDay to not know. He turned to face DogDay but didn't look at him.

‘We…were following you because…I got jealous.’ He sighed slowly, feeling guilty.

DogDay blinked. Jealous. CatNap was jealous. But of what? Or better yet, who? DogDay knew he wasn’t the only one the group had been looking at. He clenched his paws. “ Um, CatNap, what or uh who were you jealous of?” He asked softly and as calmly as possible. But he felt his eye twitch, and his tail wagged slowly and tensely behind him.

CatNap stayed silent. ‘ I was jealous…of her.’

Her? Who was ‘her’? He tried to remember who was with him that day. It was him, Mackenzie, and another critter that was volunteering, but that critter was male, not female. So was ‘her’….?

“Wait, Mackenzie? Is that who you were jealous of? But why?”

‘Why…? Because she’s pretty, and a lot fluffier and softer than me. Also, she’s a lot like you. Friendly and sweet, she’s obviously well-liked, and Picky said she did a lot of volunteering, so you and her have a lot in common.’

‘You guys also seemed to get along well! So…so why would you want me…when she’s the better cat between the two? You can cuddle and snuggle with her much better… than with me.’

CatNap slowly places his paws back on his lap. DogDay just- wow, he doesn't really know what to say. But he felt his cheek warm up, and his tail began to wag rapidly behind him. CatNap was jealous for him. He was trying his best not to smile at that.

He was brought back when he saw CatNap raise his paws again. ‘I thought that you…because she was better…you wouldn’t love or want me anymore… That I wasn’t enough… any…more…’

“Cat…Nap…” Not love CatNap. He thought that he wouldn’t love him anymore. DogDay shook his head. That was impossible.

Ok. He had to tread carefully here. He thought for a moment about what to say.

“CatNap… I’m going to start with… with the fact that I’m not happy with you and the girls spying on me or Mackenzie. That wasn’t very nice.”

‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry.’

“I know, bud, I know. But I still appreciate the apology. I’m going to have to talk with the girls about this too.”

“But CatNap, I still don’t understand why you would think I wouldn’t love you anymore or that you aren’t enough? Enough what?”

‘…I told you, she’s better than me in every way. Why would you want me when you can have a cat like her? She’s pretty, fluffy, and even though we’re both the same age, she’s done more than me. And she's nicer and sweeter. And I’m not. I’m not any of those things. So why would you still want me around?’

“… you're right…. you're not any of that.” CatNap dug his claws into his legs. He knew it. “Because you’re you, and that’s more than enough.”

What?

“CatNap, you’re incredibly cute, and your fur is so very soft.” DogDay leans in to wrap his arms around CatNap, pulling him close. “I love cuddling with you, and just having you near me.” CatNap leaned in closer to DogDay, who was gently petting his back.

“And sure, you’re not the friendliest of critters or cats, but you’re the most loyal and loving cat there is. Even when you were still wary of the other Smiling Critters, you still tried your best to get to know them in your own way; your helpfulness and understanding make us all feel heard.” He gently nipped one of CatNap’s ears.

“You may feel like you haven’t done much like the rest of us, but you do; it's just shown in a way that is different from us. For me, and for the rest of our friends, you are enough as you are. So never say you aren’t enough, cause you are.”

CatNap nods, tears forming, but before they could fall, DogDay gently wipes them away. He gives DogDay a small smile, one that DogDay returns.

“I love you as you are, CatNap.” The feline in question wrapped his arms around DogDay’s neck, holding him close.

“But it does hurt to think that you thought just cause I met someone new, that I wouldn’t love you anymore, that I wouldn’t want my best friend anymore. I know we haven’t known each other for long, but with how much time we spent together, I would have thought you had a bit more faith in me.”

CatNap looks down. He really should have known. DogDay wasn't the type to just discard someone or replace those he loved. CatNap had been very stupid. He let his jealousy and insecurities get the better of him. Wasn't he always telling DogDay not to overthink and talk things out?

“...I’m…really…sorry DogDay…”

“There’s nothing to apologise for, CatNap, because I forgive you.” He brought their faces together. And gave CatNap’s nose a little lick. CatNap moved back ever so slightly, wriggling his nose. He looked at DogDay pouting, cheeks puffed. DogDay just laughed.

DogDay buried his face against CatNap’s neck, nuzzling it. He then opened his mouth and grabbed the knot of the bow. Being mindful of CatNap’s pendant, he tugged on it until it loosened up. Now that he had better access to his neck, he nuzzled and sniffed it, taking in the sweet, calming smell of lavender.

He continued to nuzzle and pet CatNap, eliciting a quiet purr from him. DogDay thought back to what CatNap said, about being jealous. CatNap had been jealous, jealous of someone for him; he didn't want DogDay to leave him, and that made him happy. It weirdly made him so happy. His grip on CatNap tightened.

He laid CatNap onto the couch and moved to hold his hips, pressing their bodies together, face still hidden against CatNap’s neck.

“…Clingy…” CatNap softly whispered with a soft smile.

“Yeah…I’m really clingy.” He laughed quietly.

DogDay, true to his word, scolded the girls. Lecturing them that spying and following people was wrong. They apologized to him, and Hoppy took responsibility since it was her idea. DogDay forgave them, but wouldn't tolerate it happening again.

A few days later, the Smiling Critters were out in the woods, camping. Having already set up camp, they simply sat, enjoying nature. CatNap was sitting with Crafty and Bobby. The young unicorn had such a fun time dressing him up in a cute bow that she had opted to dress him up at any chance she got. Bobby joined in, saying that it wasn’t fair that she didn’t get the chance to do so last time. So CatNap sat in between them as they went over all the cute ribbons that could have him wear. Someone help him, please.

A little ways from them were the rest of the critters. Bubba was looking over his journal where he documented the flora and fauna found within the forest. Picky and Hoppy were making s’mores, while they listened to Kickin tell a funny story about something one of his music students had done.

DogDay was sitting with them, only half listening; he was more preoccupied staring at CatNap, admiring how he looked with every bow the two critters placed.

“So, Double D, what do you think?” Kickin asked.

“I think he looks cute no matter what he wears,” DogDay replied, tail wagging. And it was true, CatNap did look cute with every bow he wore, especially because he had DogDay’s sun pendant on.

“Huh?”

“Hey, you think if I ask nicely, he’ll let me take it off him again?” DogDay asked, not really paying attention to the others, instead toying with the moon pendant that hung from the collar he decided to wear for the day. The same moon pendant CatNap wore every day.

“Dude, maybe, but that is not what I am…wait, what do you mean by that?” Kickin asked, lost and confused.

And what do you mean by again? was Picky’s thought.

DogDay did not respond; instead, he got up and ran toward CatNap, tackling him to the ground. They watched as DogDay playfully pulled on the ribbon around the feline's neck, losing it. Bobby and Crafty scolded him for doing so, and the next thing he knew, he was getting a ribbon placed on him too.

Kickin still sat there confused, while Bubba merely sighed at his friends' antics. Hoppy’s jaw dropped in surprise. Who would have thought bows would do it for DogDay?

Picky, on the other hand, was truly horrified. Bobby, your plan worked too well!!!

Notes:

After DogDay and CatNap leave for the picnic

Hoppy: So, seeing as everything went well, would you 'cough' like to go on a picnic together, Bobby

Bobby: Oh, that sounds lovely, Hoppy. I would love to.

Picky: Yeah, there's still a lot of food left; let's have a picnic the 4 of us together

Crafty: Yay, picnic! Picnic!

Hoppy: Yeah...picnic...all...sigh...4 of us...
