Chapter 1: The Same Old Chaos

Chapter Text

Everyone who knew Anthony and Hanbon knew one thing. They were completely different people. Anthony was chaos. Not the kind of chaos that came from wanting to cause problems just for the sake of it. It was more like his brain moved faster than everyone else's. He could look at a completely normal situation and somehow find a way to make it ten times more complicated, ridiculous, and entertaining. A simple idea became a challenge. A normal conversation became an argument. A quiet room became a place where everyone wondered what Anthony was about to do next. He was loud, unpredictable, and impossible to ignore. And somehow… Everyone had gotten used to it. Especially Hanbon. "Anthony." He didn't look up. That was the first sign Hanbon knew he was probably doing something he shouldn't. Whenever Anthony was doing something normal, he was usually the first person to explain what he was doing. Whenever he was doing something questionable, he became suspiciously quiet. Which was impressive considering Anthony was almost never quiet. "Anthony." Still nothing. Hanbon walked closer. "What are you doing?" Anthony finally looked up. "What?" She looked down. A collection of random objects sat across the table. A piece of cardboard. Tape. Several things nobody could identify. And somehow, Anthony looked proud. Hanbon stared. "Should I ask?" "Yes." "Okay." She waited. Anthony smiled. "I'm building something." "That doesn't answer my question." "It does." "No, it tells me what you're doing. It doesn't tell me why." Anthony pointed at her. "That's why I like talking to you." Hanbon raised an eyebrow. "Because I ask follow-up questions?" "Because you challenge my ideas." "Most of your ideas need to be challenged." "Exactly." She tried not to laugh. Tried. She failed. Anthony noticed. "You laughed." "I did not." "You did." "I smiled." "Same thing." "It's not." "It is emotionally." That was how they had always been. Anthony would say something ridiculous. Hanbon would tell him why it was ridiculous. Anthony would argue. Hanbon would pretend she was annoyed. And somehow, by the end of it, they were both laughing. It was a pattern everyone in the group knew. A pattern that had existed for years. Five years was a long time. Long enough to know someone's habits. Long enough to know what they were going to say before they said it. Long enough to know when someone was joking and when they weren't. Hanbon knew Anthony better than most people did. She knew he acted confident even when he wasn't sure about something. She knew his biggest ideas usually started as random thoughts that he couldn't let go of. She knew that underneath all the chaos, Anthony cared a lot. He just wasn't always good at showing it. Anthony, in return, knew things about Hanbon too. He knew when she was tired even if she said she wasn't. He knew when she was annoyed and when she was only pretending to be annoyed. He knew when she wanted to leave a conversation and when she secretly wanted to keep talking. Neither of them thought about how strange that was. It was just normal. The rest of the group had accepted their friendship a long time ago. Will had stopped questioning it. Coy had stopped trying to understand it. Because Anthony and Hanbon had their own way of working. "Are you two arguing again?" Will asked as he walked into the room. Anthony looked offended. "We're discussing." Hanbon nodded. "He's wrong." "I am not." "You are." "See? This is what I mean." Will looked between them. "You realize you do this every day, right?" "Do what?" Anthony asked
"Argue like an old married couple." Both of them immediately reacted. "What?" "No." At the exact same time. Will smiled. "That was actually worse." Hanbon shook her head. "We are just friends." "Nobody said you weren't." "But you implied it." "I implied nothing." Anthony laughed. "You two are making it weird." Coy walked past. "You make everything weird." "That's not true." Everyone looked at him. Anthony paused. "Okay, sometimes." The funny thing was… Nobody thought Anthony and Hanbon were similar. They weren't. Hanbon was usually the person bringing everyone back to reality. She was thoughtful, calm, and practical. When everyone else got caught up in an idea, she was the person asking the questions nobody wanted to answer. "Is this actually possible?" "Is this safe?" "Is this a good idea?" Usually, the answer was no. Anthony, meanwhile, was usually the reason those questions needed to be asked. But somehow, they balanced each other. Where Anthony brought energy, Hanbon brought stability. Where Hanbon overthought things, Anthony reminded her to have fun. They were opposites. But they fit. During filming that day, Anthony had another idea. Everyone knew that sentence was dangerous. "I have an idea." Will immediately looked worried. "Should we be concerned?" Anthony smiled. "No." Coy laughed. "That means yes." Hanbon looked at Anthony. "What is it?" He explained his plan. Everyone listened. Silence. Then Hanbon spoke. "No." Anthony looked shocked. "You didn't even think about it." "I did." "For how long? "Three seconds." "That's not enough time." "It was enough." "But I have a vision." "You always have a vision." "And?" "And your visions usually end with everyone asking why they trusted you." Anthony looked at the group. "That's unfair." Nobody disagreed. But despite all the teasing… Hanbon helped him anyway. She always did. She fixed the parts that didn't work. She helped organize the idea. She made sure everything actually came together. Anthony noticed. He always noticed. He just didn't always say anything. During a break, Hanbon sat down and checked her phone. Anthony walked over. "You okay?" She looked up. "Yeah." "You looked tired." She smiled slightly. "You noticed?" Anthony looked confused. "Of course I noticed." Again. That simple answer. Like it was obvious. Hanbon looked at him for a second longer than usual. Then she smiled. "You're surprisingly observant." "Surprisingly?" "Sometimes you don't seem like you are." "Rude." "Accurate." He laughed. Later, after filming ended, everyone started cleaning up. Hanbon was packing away equipment when Anthony walked over. "You don't have to help." She looked at him. "Neither do you." "Yeah, but I'm responsible." She laughed. "That's the funniest thing you've said all day." Anthony smiled. "See? I made you laugh." "You do that a lot." The answer came out naturally. Too naturally. For a second, they both paused. Then Anthony smiled. "Yeah." That night, Will was looking through old footage. He wasn't searching for anything specific. He just found himself watching clips from years ago. There was Anthony being chaotic. There was Hanbon reacting exactly how everyone expected. There was the same teasing. The same jokes. The same friendship. But watching it all together… He noticed something. Anthony always looked for Hanbon's reaction first. Whenever something funny happened, he looked at her. Whenever he had a new idea, he asked her opinion. Whenever everyone laughed, he checked if she was laughing too. And Hanbon did the same. She always knew where he was. She always knew what he was doing. She always understood him. Will smiled. Not because it was obvious. Because it wasn't. Not yet. But there was something there. Something small. Something neither of them had noticed. The next day, Anthony walked into the studio. Hanbon was already there. "Hey." "Hey." A normal greeting. A normal moment. But both of them smiled. And neither of them knew why. Because for five years, they had been best friends. Five years of jokes. Five years of arguments. Five years of choosing each other without thinking. And maybe… That was what made it so complicated. Because sometimes love doesn't start with a big moment. Sometimes it starts quietly. With someone who already knows you. Someone who already understands you. Someone who has been there the whole time. And sometimes… You don't realize you've fallen for someone because they were never a stranger. They were already home.
