Chapter 1: The Accident

Chapter Text

A crash. A flash of the room. An intense pain in her stomach, then head. Sudden darkness, soon broken by a bright light. The only thought in her mind: What just happened?

Harmony Riverwood was 17. Life was good, she was passing every class, had a few friends, and had a dream: see GhostWillows in concert. But that dream was really hard to achieve, especially since music is forbidden everywhere. But she, like a handful of others everywhere, knew not all the music groups broke; in fact GhostWillows is one of the few still strong after the ban. Music is banned, and considered a crime. Anyone caught with an affiliation to anything music-related would be initially sentenced two years minimum in a special prison in the heart of the city.

Harmony had managed to avoid being caught for so long. Then the day came: GhostWillows was going to perform near where she lived. Perfect. She had two weeks to get tickets and find a way to get there. Her parents, of course, knew of her love of music. They too loved music, so they were very supportive in helping her achieve her dream. As were her friends.

“Let the concert countdown begin! T minus 13 days!” Whispered Harmony's closest friend, Bella.

“I know! I can't wait!” Whispered Harmony back.

It was the day before the concert. Everything had gone to plan, and Harmony was going to the concert tomorrow. The one thing she hadn't accounted for was the betrayal. The biggest betrayal ever. Someone had turned on her, and it was only a matter of time before the cops were on her. Luckily the concert was on a Saturday, so Harmony wouldn't have to leave until then. She could just hide in the house; it would be a couple days before they thought to check and–

CRASH

BANG

“HARMONY RIVERWOOD COME OUT!” A voice yelled out. She reluctantly obeyed. “You have been accused of being in possession of forbidden devices, and for having an affiliation to music of any kind, and sentenced to– NO WAIT!”

BANG

A sharp and intense pain in her stomach, and time seemed to slow for a moment as Harmony fell back. Then a sharp pain in her head as it hit the floor.

The last thing she heard was, “YOU IDIOT!” from someone in the room. Then, immediately came darkness, which slowly turned into a bright white light as the pain melted away. The only thought in her head: What the HELL just happened??

Then the light faded. Harmony sat up, trying to figure out what happened. The pain was gone, but she felt…different. She stood up and went to find a mirror. She looked fine. She heard crying and screaming, and she walked back to the middle of the house.

And then she saw it. And she panicked for a moment. She saw herself, laying on the ground, blood surrounding the middle of her body, and forming a small puddle around her. Well that explains it, she thought to herself. She looked around. The people that had bombarded their way in had quickly vanished. Greaaaat. She thought for a moment. So I must be like some sort of ghost… interesting.

“Guys…guys I'm here…” Harmony said. No one looked at her. She placed her hand on her sister's shoulder. No response. Oh…no one can see me…or hear me…Well, this makes things harder. She floated back to her room, slipping through walls and her door like it was empty space.

Sitting on her bed, she kept wondering what happened. She wasn't supposed to die; she was supposed to just go to prison like everyone else. So what went wrong? After a moment she came to a malicious realization. I…I can kind of do whatever…No one can see or hear me… An evil thought passed her mind: I mean…theoretically…I could rob a bank or something… No! No, I can't just turn to crime because I died! She tried to pick up her notebook to write ideas down, but found her hand phased right through it.

“Shoot... That's not gonna work…” she thought aloud. “Oh my god, school! What am I gonna do about school?!” She thought for a moment. “I mean, I suppose I could just go…except I can't do anything… Oh well, I'll still try.”

Five days later, there was a funeral. Harmony found she could go anywhere beyond her house. What the hell? She thought. I'm gonna go to my own funeral. And she did.

As the time passed, and it turned into a year since she died, Harmony began to wonder if anyone still cared. Her friends never talked about her anymore; it was like they'd never met. Harmony felt a bit distraught. Of course she didn't expect to be all anyone talked about, but she thought her friends would at least mention her in conversations or something. Instead it was like she'd never existed. Her friends, of all people. She noticed none of them even came to her funeral. Obviously they never knew she knew that, and they never knew she sat with them in every class since she died (even though it wasn't like she could do anything, she still couldn't interact with objects yet). She knew what happened in every conversation at lunch, every note-pass in class.

Harmony constantly wondered what was going on with her friends. It seemed they never actually cared about her, only pretended. She was tired of it. She continued to keep tabs on them, but it got hard after graduation. She of course attended, and pretended to go through like normal, despite not being able to graduate like a normal person. Technically speaking, she could never actually graduate, being dead and all. She eventually gave up on trying to keep tabs on her “friends,” though. Nothing interesting ever happened, and it was getting harder and harder to find them.

Weeks passed, and Harmony couldn’t be any more bored. Nothing happened around the house, and even though she could go places, nothing was interesting enough. She felt so alone. No one ever knew she was around, and it got lonely. She drifted to the living room.

Aurora, her little sister, walked in. “Hey guys, Harmony’s favorite artist is back out…”

  Wait what?!

  “Oh, really?”

“GhostWillows is back out on tour?! WHERE?!” Harmony exclaimed, her excitement temporarily making her forget Aurora couldn’t hear her.

“Yeah. A place near Sprucewood Park in about two months it says," her sister continued.

YES! We are SO going to that show!
