“That was a long one, huh, Lieutenant?” Roy said, stretching his arms.
“Yes, sir, quite—“ Riza yawned despite herself. “Quite long.”
The two had been on stakeout for 16 hours straight and had finally found their target. He went down without much of a fight, thankfully, but it had still been draining. It was now almost ten at night.
“How about we go for some late-night ice cream?” Roy asked, pointing to a shop that was preparing to close. Riza shook her head.
“That shop doesn’t carry mint chip flavor. There’s no point if you can’t have the one you like.”
“They do have cappuccino flavor, though, and that’s your favorite. I don’t mind trying something new.”
“Besides, it would be an annoyance to the shopkeepers. They’re closing it down for the night.” Riza said.
Roy chuckled. “If you insist. But at least let me walk you home. The shortcut to your apartment goes through a few shady allies.”
Riza nodded. “Thank you, sir.”
They bade each other goodnight after arriving at Riza’s home. “See you tomorrow, sir!” Riza said.
“See you tomorrow, Lieutenant.

Riza heard a familiar knock on her door. “Come in,” She said to the colonel.
Roy burst into Riza’s room. “I can’t believe you fell down the stairs, Riza!”
Indeed, Riza was on bed rest after breaking her arm from a fall down the stairs.
She shrugged, causing her shoulder to ache. “Hayate was a little overeager to start our walk. I’m fine though, so there was no need to skip work to visit.” She said the last few words a little louder than necessary.
Roy sighed dramatically. “And after I went through all the trouble of getting your favorite color of flowers!” He looked down at Hayate. “She can be so cruel, can’t she?”
Riza looked at him flatly. “I appreciate the gesture, sir, but—“ “Uh-uh!” Roy said, wagging a finger, “I asked the florist for hypoallergenic flowers so you wouldn’t be stuck sneezing all day.”
He pulled out a bouquet of blue orchids from somewhere and handed them to Riza. “I’ll go get a vase for those. You have one in the third cabinet to the right?” “That’s right.” Riza said.
After Roy went to the kitchen, Riza took in a deep breath of the flowers’ scent. They really did smell lovely.
“Wait…” Remembering something from her flower phase long ago, she froze.
“Weren’t real blue orchids extremely rare?!”

“I have more paperwork for you to sign, Colonel.” Riza said, carrying a thick stack of papers.
Roy sighed, but wasn’t surprised. As long as there weren’t any riots or crime lords to take care of, that was basically his whole job.
“Thank you, Lieutenant.” He said as Riza set down the papers on his desk.
After taking a good look at them, he smiled. Riza always gave him the paperwork with the signature on the right side so his left-handed handwriting wouldn’t smudge as much.
He looked over to her desk and met her eyes. She smiled, and he smiled back.

“Oh, hello Elizabeth!” Roy said, leaning back in his desk chair. The others in the office just rolled their eyes.
“Hi, Roy!” The chipper voice on the other side of the phone said. Roy loved hearing her like that, and even if it was just an act, the hopeless romantic side of him hoped that he was the only one she sounded so happy with.
“I’m really sorry, but would you mind walking my dog for me? It’s a busy day at work.”
Roy looked at the clock. “I thought that he likes going for walks around noon, isn’t it a little early?”
“He prefers it, but it’s going to rain soon.”
“Got it, I’ll be right there.” Roy set down the phone. “Gentlemen, something urgent just came up. I’ll be back soon.”
“He needs to stop blowing off work for a girl…” Hughes said, smiling wryly.

It was the weekend, and since nothing important was happening, both Roy and Riza were allowed to take the day off. They were walking around the central square and having a good time.
Roy had rarely seen Riza in civilian clothes since joining the military, and he had to admit that she looked amazing in the dress she was wearing. Even better, she was really smiling, and actually laughing at his dumb jokes.
“Read anything good lately?” Roy asked after their previous topic of conversation had died down.
“I started a new series someone told me about. A fantasy. I like it very much so far.” Roy grinned. “I didn’t know you enjoyed fantasy.” Riza blushed a little. “Yes, well… Everyone could use a little break from reality once in a while. Wouldn’t you agree?”
“I couldn’t agree more! I myself indulge in science fiction now and then.” Roy said, picturing aliens flying above the
“I would think that an alchemist such as yourself would find them bland, sir.”
“None of our coworkers are here, and we’re not even at the office. Won’t you call me Roy, Riza?”
Riza blushed again. “Twice in one day. Good job, me.” Roy thought.
“Okay, Roy.” Riza said.
