Work Text:

He watched Wifies turn around, admiring the vast ocean, but in those moments Hummer did not look at the ocean. Instead he admired how Wifies' hair and bandana floated in the water, his body light in the water. He truly was glad that it was Wifies who figured out that screenshot because he couldn't imagine anyone else going on this journey with him.

Just one more tick and finally. Finally he'd be able to meet Levi. After everything, dedicating half a year to this he would finally—.

You Died!

Hummer5718 drowned

Hummer stared at the screen.

No.

No.

No.

He had done everything right, he believed in Levi. Levi was real. He knew it. He knew it. He knew it. Did he? Yes he searched so long for him, he had to be real. Levi was real. Then why? Why didn't it work? It had to work. Unless—unless he was wrong.

He was wrong. After everything he'd been through, he was wrong. He was fucking wrong. He dragged Wifies, the only person who believed him into searching for a creature that doesn't exist. It was dumb to drag him into this and even dumber that he had started to grow affection towards the other. It was stupid. It was all stupid.

Hummer closed Minecraft, sighing as just stared at his monitor. The one thing he believed in was a hoax. A glitch in the system, some bug that was never fixed. He was a fool for believing the Leviathan ever existed. Half a year and he had nothing to show for it. Well not quite.

He had met Wifies, the one person who stood by him while everyone else looked in the wrong places. He imagined those soft lilac eyes of him, how they reflected dimly against the ocean floor. How they got excited when they found a new lead. Or the way he tied and retied his bandana when he was thinking. The messy handwriting left on footnotes of tethered books. If it took half a year to meet the guy and he had known him for even less that. It was so stupid, yet he couldn't help but think about him. To think about everything they've been through. However, at the end of the day, he was wrong. He had wasted Wifies' time. He probably rented him, hated him even. Hummer wouldn't blame him, Wifies had trusted him. Believed him. Believed in Levi. In the end he had disappointed him.

Hummer couldn't help but chuckle, it was so stupid, but he had felt him. He knew Levi was real. He had to be. At least that's what he had hoped for.

When Wifies first sent that email he wasn't sure if he had figured out the truth beneath the screenshot. Then when he met him in the game and he confronted him, he knew he had to complete his mission with Wifies by his side. In the end they failed just like Arronax had said: There is no Leviathan. There never was.

She was right and he was wrong. The difference was that Arronax had come to that conclusion much more easily. Maybe that's why she had built the museum, to honor the research she had care so passionately about. That Wifies and him had explored and discovered her old base, her real research.

It took a while, but in the end Wifies trusted him. He trusted him, and he broke that trust, but he was so sure of it. He knew that Levi was real yet he failed to prove it. He failed to keep Wifies by his side.

He couldn't make excuses anymore. No matter how hard he tried to come up with a logical explanation, the only conclusion was that Levi, the Leviathan was not real. It hurt, knowing the truth, but sometimes the truth was bitter to swallow, but he had to. He had to move on.

Dear Hummer,

I hope this email finds you well.

I don't know why Levi let me in and not you. I don't know why he stopped my recording. Or why all my screenshots are blank. Like I was never really there.

I don't know what Levi is.

Or what he wants.

But I can promise you this. I won't stop, until I figure it out.

For you, and for me.

Yours,

Wifies

That email was sent a week ago, a little after Hummer was banned off the server. He wanted to believe those words. He really did, but he couldn't. He couldn't speak to Wifies after all that, not because Wifies might be lying but because after everything, it was Wifies who got to see him. To see the Leviathan. He deserved it. He really did. However Hummer did not.

He did want to see the Leviathan, but he had not chosen him. It was Wifies who deserved the glory of saying he found the Leviathan. That he had seen him because he truly believed. Unlike Hummer, who after everything, was not graced with the same luck. Hummer did not deserve to him. To see Wifies. He had failed him, and for that he was sorry, he really was. Wifies would have to continue his journey alone.

Hummer did not reply to the email. He wanted to, craved it more than anything, but he was not worth of searching for the Leviathan with Wifies. He wanted to spend more days swimming the ocean with Wifies, pacing in circles as they thought of new ideas of searching for Levi. He wanted to spend more time with Wifies, but he couldn't. He couldn't show his face when he had failed and Wifies succeed. Wifies was more than capable of solving this mystery on his own, it was a shame he wouldn't be a part of it.

A week ago, when they both decided to try for one last time Hummer really wanted Levi to be real, but more than anything he wanted Wifies to see him for himself. Hummer might've not been the lucky one, but he truly was glad that Wifies had seen it. Perhaps he was more grateful that he had a friend with him. A friend who had seen him, and for Hummer, that was more than enough. It was certainly more than he deserved, to have had make a friend like Wifies.

The TV-head sighed, looking over his ship one last time. They hadn't spent much time here, but this was where it all began. Now it was where it all ended. Above him clouds had started to form, dark clouds covering the sun, while the wind picked up. It wasn't long before the rain fell, his ship rocking with the waves.

Hummer didn't move, instead he closed his eyes, enjoying his final moments of being a Leviathan hunter. As he disconnected from his world, the only sound was the roaring sea.
