A Fickle Of Hope In A Pit Of Despair

Summary:

You realized that the Byakuya you knew was a whole different person.
Any of these classmates are.
Because how could you keep believing in hope when you're the assistant of someone who could do something so heartless?
How could any of your classmates commit something as vile as taking someone's life...?

(Slightly byakuya centric js bc ur his assistant, Reader x Makoto, slightly makoto centric, canon-divergent, reader insert thh)

Notes:

Uh ok here we go. I'm doing a longfic. Wow ok so crazy right right right?? Anyway it will contain some triggering things so make sure to double triple check the tags!! Also will contain spoilers obviously. Shout out to sleep awake by everybodyhasroots. So peak heavily recommend reading it.uh English isnt my first language and im fucking GLAD. Byakuya does not deserve to be in a proper fic. Ew.

The reader is meant to be based off of me, but a lot of the story will revolve around the reader's growth. It is gender, race, appearance neutral, except for some important details like some specific parts of the clothes or the fact that they have a face or smth lol.

Please please PLEASE remember to read the tags. Even though this story is still in it's early stages,it will include the following: Suicidal thoughts and ideation, murder, body horror, despair, vomiting, depression, post traumatic stress, survivor guilt and more warnings will be added. If you aren't in the right state of mind to read this,do not. Mental health comes first before some silly story.

Sorry in advance if you dont like the reader lmaooooo
Uhm cringe warning ig? Idk my jokes are js unfunny. Also please do not skin me this is my first time posting on ao3...

Chapter Text

Hope's Peak Academy.

The school designed for only the elite, the best out of the best, Super High School Level Ultimates. Regular students can only dream of even setting foot onto the same ground as Hope's Peak.

And yet here you were, a regular 15 year old student who got enrolled by mere luck. Since you were the assistant of the Togami Heir; Byakuya Togami, the Togami Corporation had somehow managed to enroll you a year earlier than you were supposed to. And you were incredibly grateful and all, but most of all you were scared. Sure, you excited but you were a whole year earlier. A whole year.

You looked out of the car window. How tall is Hope's Peak again..!?

Byakuya cleared his throat, snapping you out of your train of thought as you felt the car abruptly stop. You shot up from the backseat of the car, circled around it, and opened his car door. Byakuya scowled like usual, but took your hand as you stumbled getting him up and onto the asphalt.

"Tch," he muttered, crossing his arms. "Stand up straight. Push your shoulders back. You are my assistant -- an Ultimate Herbalist at that -- and all the others who are below us will observe. " Byakuya quickly pulled out his phone and double checked how his blonde hair looked, adjusting his sleek black suit, smoothing out his white undershirt, and pushing up his glasses.

"I understand, Master Togami." You bowed down dramatically (and maybe a little sarcastically), your hair falling over your face and barely held back a giggle.

"Oh cut that out, Y/N." The blonde boy huffed disapprovingly, looking down at you. "You know damn well that nickname is foolish and childish. Stop calling me that." Before you could respond to that,, the shiny, forest green car you had previously been contained in drove away with a nasty screech.

You didn't realize that your palms were tightly clasped over your ears until Byakuya had lightly tapped your right hand. You quickly retracted them, nervously smoothing out your half apron and looked away.

Why are you so skittish?! You're fifteen goddamit!

You shakily cleared your throat, and looked anywhere but the taller boy's face. If you were to be completely honest, you cared a lot about your  childhood friend's opinion. He is the Ultimate Affluent Progeny, after all.

Byakuya raised an eyebrow but said nothing, his lapis blue eyes narrowing just by a  fraction. You turned around on your heel, and faced Hope's Peak Academy again. The building was incredibly tall and wide, stretching far beyond the parking lot. So this is it. You, the Ultimate Herbalist, was going to Hope's Peak Academy.

You couldn't help but feel giddy, bouncing on the balls of your heels out of excitement. Byakuya finally turned back to you, and gestured to follow.

And there you went, stepping into the gates of the high school for the first time.

Little did you know that your life will be altered forever, and there would be no way to undo it.

                                           --------

As you opened the large doors of the school, dread started pooling in your stomach. Something was off,and you couldn't quite put your finger on it. You turned slightly to look at the blonde.

"Are you sure that we're on time? The whole school seems weirdly empty." You fidgeted with your hang nail as you spoke.

"We are actually 10 minutes early if that's what you're concerned about," he replied. "Though I think we should look around this...place. Might give us an advantage of sorts." He pushed up his glasses, a nervous tick of his you have observed before.

You nodded as you opened the  wooden entrance door, its frame creaking and  leading to a long hallway. Or was it a hallway...? You suddenly weren't sure. A wave of nausea washed over you as you stumbled, dizziely and held onto the wall. Byakuya seemed to experience something similar as well since he had fallen down onto the ground with a dull thud.

Your vision swam before your eyes, and before you knew it you felt your face touch the floor tiles, you cheek pressing against it before you ultimately closed your eyes.

.

You awoke with a sudden jolt of pain in your head. The headache was so bad you felt it  physically pulse against your skull, clawing over your ears, scalp, skin.

You looked around, your eyes finally beginning to focus. It seems that you were somehow moved to a whole different location, a classroom of sorts. The walls were painted an uncomfortable yellow, with rows of desks neatly occupying the space. You realized, finally that you were sitting in a chair belonging to one of them.

As you began to finally gain all of your consciousness, you felt as if someone had flipped the switch to turn on your ears.

Wow, what an example you totally didn't pull out of your ass!

Now that you started noticing all the distinct sounds around you, you heard something. Or, more like someone. Someone was actively breathing to your left. In the desk right next to you.

You shot up from the seat so fast the desk rocked lightly, waking up the student beside you.

Oh.

It's just Byakuya.

Again with the skittishness. Seriously, after classes you should go to therapy or something.

After he seemed to gain all his consciousness back as well, you both decided to look around. There was a monitor in the front of the classroom, and the windows seemed to be boarded up with thick pieces of metal. Byakuya also pointed out that therewere surveillance cameras in the classroom as well, making you wonder if the whole school is under surveilance.

"Hey...so uh.." You spoke up, a new wave of dread washing over you.

"What is it, assistant?" He glared daggers at you. The fact that you know it's sorta friendly might be a problem..

"This is not a regular school is it? I mean the windows are all boarded up and there's so much unessesary surveillance..." Your voice trailed off.

"Are you implying that we were abducted? Again?" He seemed to get visibly angry, his hands automatically reaching for his glasses. Yes, unfortunately you have been kidnapped multiple times before, thanks to your shared background. It really is lovely being from the Togami Corporation isn't it?..

"That is a possibility. I'm not a hundred percent sure but us randomly passing out, waking up here, and  the-"

"The strange note on my desk?"

"I was gonna say the boarded up windows but...note?You had a note on your desk?" You were beginning to get more anxious by the second.

"Yes," he replied "You didn't notice? I am disappointed -- and frankly surprised -- that you're my assistant."

"I mean, we did  grow up together and...oh shut up and just give me the note!"

He rummaged through his pocket silently, before finally giving you a neatly folded piece of paper. You quickly opened it, your mind already racing with all the possibilities of the text inside.

" 'Admissions brochure'," you read aloud " 'The new semester has just begun. As ya embark on new beginnings, this school will become yer new world'..?"

There was a messy drawing of multiple buildings above the text on the right page.

"It's ridiculous isn't it?" Byakuya commented after a pregnant pause.

"..." You couldn't take your eyes off of the paper. Something felt incredibly off and you were beginning to loathe the fact that the feeling has started becoming familiar. "..Sure."

You looked over to the clock, remembering that you were supposed to meet everyone in the gym by 8:00. It had somehow passed only 6 minutes since you passed out and woke up. Weird.

"We should get going," You said, finally.

-

After multiple wrong turns in the weirdly pink, checkered tile hallways, you ended up in the main hall, along with 13 other ultimates.

...Damn.

You read all about them online, but seeing them in person just feels like the real deal. Like you're actually somehow a part of this group of incredibly talented people.

Plus Byakuya.

You were so lost that you didn't even know what to say or who to talk to first.

"So," a boy with red hair and a goatee spoke up (must be Leon..) "Are you two new here as we-"

"Sorry I'm late-!!"

A taller guy with brown hair and a jacket over his green hoodie rushed in, slamming the door open with a loud bang. You flinched, but kept your ground as he stopped and put his hands on his knees, panting.

"I'm Makoto Naegi," He managed between breaths, "Some stuff came up and...I lost track of time..." he looked up at all of you.

Byakuya scoffed, seemingly unimpressed by the new student.

"Makoto! You're late by exactly 7 minutes!" The Ultimate Moral Compass (or so you read) yelled out.

"Sorry sorry..." Makoto replied sheepishly, rubbing his neck.

A blue haired girl dressed in a school uniform rushed up to him.

"Aren't you..Naegi? Naegi from Blackroot Junior High..?" She questioned, seeming intrigued. " I believe we attended the same junior high. Sayaka Maizono, from your English class." She extended a hand, waiting for him to shake it.

"M-Maizono!" The green-eyed boy gasped. "S-So you really are in that hit idol group now!.."

"Am I interrupting something?.." You suddenly asked, awkwardly clearing your throat.

The two of them flushed in embarrassment at the comment, but quickly turned and started introducing eachother to each student.

I guess I should introduce myself...
