You’re bad at fishing

Summary:

Lana is determined to teach Kiawe how to fish properly

Notes:

Helloooo!

Okay so this ship definitely only has four others people that also ship it. But even as a kid I liked the idea of the two of them, water and fire pairs are always fun.

And did I write about fishing even though I don’t know anything about it? Yes- so don’t take this as a fishing manual. Only wrote this because it’s a cute idea. Feel free to correct anything.

And English is not my first language, so there might be grammar or spelling mistakes.

Work Text:

“Yaaaay! Mimo is here!” Harper and Sarah cheered. Both ran up to their friend, they all looked ecstatic to see each other. Their eyes glimmered as they jumped around in the living room in a circle.

Lana walked over to Kiawe, “Thanks for letting my sister hang out with yours, there aren’t many other kids in the nearby era on Akala.” Kiawe said.

“No problem” Lana smiled, “They get along great, they’re-“

Crash

“Ops! But nothing broke!” The girls called form another room.

“-really similar.” Lana sighed.

Kiawe shook his head tiredly, “Yup.”

“I’ll pick her up around five, see you-“ Kiawe turns to leave, but Lana grabs his wrist.

Kiawe looks back at her again, a little confused.

Lana looked oddly determined, “If you’re free, would you mind hanging out?”

Kiawe blinked, “Uh- I’m not doing anything? You…need help with something?” He asked slightly perplexed. They were friends, so of course a hangout wouldn’t be odd. But normally it would be when the others were with them.

Lana shook her head “No, just come with me.”

She led him outside, still holding his wrist.

They walked out on the pier, Lapras chilling in the water. Kiawe’s Charizard stood there waiting for his trainer, curiously looking in the teen’s direction as they passed.

Lana let go of Kiawe and jogs behind her house. She quickly popped up again with two fishing rods in both hands.

“Where is this going?” The fire type trainer said while frowning skeptically.

“I’m teaching you how to fish!” Lana glimmered.

Kiawe only looked more doubtful, “Why?-“

“Because, you sucked when we went fishing with the class.” Lana replied.

“I didn’t suck-!” Kiawe argued, “and besides, I’m a fire type trainer, not exactly the type of guy that would naturally excel at fishing.”

“I’m offering my company and teaching, and you’re declining?” Lana grumbled.

“It’s not like that- I just- uh..didn’t expect that would be what we would be doing?”

“Well it is, now take a fishing rod.” Lana handed him one.

Kiawe did as told, still looking confused. He followed Lana down the pier and they both sat down by the edge.

“You at least know the basics, since you’ve done it before.” Lana said as she put on her bait.

“I guess.” Kiawe struggled to put on his.

Lana threw hers out on the ocean, Kiawe did too.

“The trick is to be patient, but also prepared at the same time.” she told.

“Patience isn’t one of my strongest qualities.” the fire trainer sighed.

“Exactly, you’ll improve at multiple points.” Lana said.

A few silent moments pass.

“So you want to improve my skills…?” Kiawe asked.

Lana shrugged, “I just thought spending time with you sounded interesting. We hardly do it.”

Kiawe turns his head slightly to look at her more clearly.

“We should do it more often then.”

Lana met his gaze, then smiled “That’d be fun, I like beating you at things.”

Kiawe’s jaw dropped. “You only wanted to fish with me to show my incompetence in it?!”

Lana stuck out her tongue playfully, “A part of it.”

“You’re impossible.” He grunts, sulkily turning back to the fishing.

“I do like your company in other ways though” Lana added.

“Appreciate you too” Kiawe gave her a glance as he smiled.

Kiawe’s fishing rod suddenly started tugging. “Oh- I think I got something!” He gasped.

“Don’t pull it up immediately! I saw that was your repeating mistake last time- wait for it to get its grip secure!” Lana instructed.

Kiawe nods, and focuses as best he could. Then with all his might spun the rod towards him.

The water bubbled and it revealed a Luvdisc.

“Woah- I actually caught something!” Kiawe said surprised.

“Right? Congratulations!” Lana cheered, giving him a small applause.

Kiawe led the Pokemon onto the pier, it flapping its body.

“What now?” He asked.

“Release it, if you don’t want to catch it that is.” Lana said.

The fire type trainer carefully lowered the Luvdisc into the water, where it swam quickly away.

“What’s the point of fishing when you’re just going to release them afterwards?” Kiawe questioned.

“It’s so much more than that, it’s the calmness you feel while doing it, the excitement to not know what you’ll get, the thrill when you actually catch something.” Lana’s eyes shimmered. “It was a good feeling catching something- am I right?”

Kiawe looked at her for a second, “Huh, guess it kind of was.” he chuckled.
