Chapter Text
Neon light from the Mystic Grill logo bleeds through the condensation on the heavy glass windows, casting long, bruised shadows across the polished hardwood floor. The air inside hums with the bass-heavy thrum of late-2000s alt-rock and the frantic energy of dozens of high schoolers crammed together in tight denim and layers of colorful camisoles. The air carries that specific, restless chill of early autumn turning sharp.
Caroline Forbes stands near the edge of the dark wood bar, her fingers idly trailing along the rim of a sticky cocktail glass. Her blonde curls are perfectly coiffed, bouncing with every eager micro-movement of her shoulders. Her eyes dart nervously across the crowd, searching for approval in the room she spent hours curating. When her gaze lands on Damon Salvatore leaning back against the bar with effortless, predatory grace, her face instantly lights up with an over-eager, hopeful smile. She smooths down her fitted top, takes a breath, and closes the distance between them.
"Amazing party, right?" Caroline asks, her voice pitched high with a blend of nervous excitement and teenage enthusiasm. She rocks back on her heels, gesturing vaguely toward the buzzing crowd with a French-manicured hand.
Damon turns his head slowly, smirking over the rim of a glass filled with amber liquid. His dark eyes scan her face with cool, transactional boredom. "Glad you thought of it," he replies, his voice a smooth, low drawl that carries zero warmth.
Caroline’s smile wavers for a fraction of a second, but she quickly rallies, leaning into his space with a bright, expectant look. "Well, are you having a good time?"
Damon doesn't blink. He sets his glass down on the wooden counter with a sharp, deliberate clink. "Do you have my crystal?"
The air leaves Caroline’s lungs in a small, crestfallen puff. Her posture wilts slightly, the performative joy slipping to reveal a deep, unsettling anxiety beneath her practiced cheer. "No."
"Then I'm not having a good time," Damon says smoothly, his tone flat and dismissive.
Before Caroline can attempt to salvage the conversation or offer an apology, Damon’s attention shifts past her shoulder. His body languidly turns toward the front entrance of the Grill. A blonde woman in a fitted leather jacket and a dark top has just stepped through the double doors, bringing the cool night air in with her. Damon instantly abandons Caroline, slipping past her without a backward glance. He cuts through the throng of teenagers with fluid, dangerous ease, intercepting the newcomer before she can take five steps into the room.
"Where's my brother?" Damon demands, blocking her path with an arch eyebrow.
Lexi Branson pauses, tossing her high-volume blonde hair over her shoulder. Her expression is a masterclass in calm, unbothered superiority as she looks Damon up and down. "He said he'd meet me here."
Damon smirks, turning on the charm like a light switch. "Buy you a—"
Lexi doesn't wait for him to finish. She cuts him off mid-sentence, stepping clean past him with an airy, practiced dismissal. As she glides deeper into the warm, noisy interior of the Grill, the air around her changes. To an untrained human, it’s just the ambient heat of a crowded bar, but to a three-and-a-half-century-old vampire, the atmosphere carries a distinct, suffocating static.
It is the distinct, heavy charge of compulsion.
Lexi moves through the crowd like a chameleon. She is physically twenty-one—forever frozen at the age she was turned—but biologically three hundred and forty-nine years old, born in the late autumn of 1659. She effortlessly adopts the genki, upbeat persona of the room, blending into the sea of local teenagers with light laughs, small nods, and half-dancing steps to the thumping beat of the speakers. She accepts a red plastic cup offered by a high school senior, takes a polite sip, and smiles warmly at a group of girls taking low-res digital camera photos in a booth.
Yet behind her sparkling blue eyes, her centuries of honed perception are intensely active. She tracks the invisible threads of mind control lacing through the room, and as she glides closer to the bar, the sensory imprint grows stronger. It hits her nose first—a sour, detached aftertaste hanging in the air like fine mist, smelling strikingly like raw egg yolks dipped in cheap whiskey. It is the unmistakable psychic stink of Damon’s sloppy, heavy-handed compulsion.
Her eyes lock onto Caroline Forbes.
The blonde girl is standing alone at the counter, her shoulders tight, her hands trembling as she signals the bartender for another shot. Lexi reads the dynamic in an instant. Caroline is Stefan's friend—the enthusiastic human girl who went out of her way to throw this party for him. But beneath her bubbly exterior, Caroline's eyes carry the hollow, glassy sheen of someone whose mind is being picked apart at the seams.
Lexi lowers her mental defenses, intentionally softening her posture as she saunters up to the bar. She places her elbows on the counter next to Caroline, adopting the breezy tone of an easygoing partygoer looking to make a casual friend.
"Great crowd tonight," Lexi says warmly, leaning in just enough to be heard over the music. "You really nailed the vibe. Stefan’s a lucky guy to have friends who throw him a whole event for his birthday."
Caroline blinks, startled out of her anxious haze. She looks over at Lexi, a reflexively polite smile snapping back onto her face. "Oh! Thanks! Yeah, I just... I wanted it to be really special, you know? Stefan's great."
Caroline reaches for a shot glass sitting on the counter, knocking back the dark liquor in one fluid, desperate swallow. She winces as the alcohol hits her throat, her eyes widening from the sudden, burning intensity of it. She wipes her lip with the back of her hand, visibly trying to keep herself tethered to the moment. Lexi watches the subtle tremor in the girl's fingers. Softening her posture even further, Lexi leans closer, tilting her head. When she speaks again, her voice drops an octave, turning velvety, smooth, and gently hypnotic. The cadence is soft, pulling at the frayed edges of the compulsion binding Caroline's thoughts.
"He really is," Lexi murmurs softly, her eyes holding Caroline's with a warm, steady focus. "So... what does Damon want from you, sweetie?"
The tension in Caroline’s shoulders instantly melts under the soothing weight of Lexi’s voice. The fog in her mind parts just enough for the truth to spill out without resistance. "He needs a crystal," Caroline sighs, her tone turning airy and detached. "The Bennett family amber crystal. He won't stop asking about it."
A cold, sharp shock ripples through Lexi’s chest, though not a single muscle on her face betrays it.
The Bennett crystal.
In an instant, three centuries of memories flood Lexi's mind with crystal clarity. The Bennetts were never just another witch bloodline to her; they were woven into the very fabric of her long, immortal life. The first Bennett witch she ever encountered was Beatrice back in the early 1700s—a powerful, commanding woman who commanded respect in equal measure to her magic. Decades later, Lexi had fallen deeply in love with Beatrice's granddaughter, Emily. It was Emily who had crafted the very daylight rings that protected vampires from the sun, gifting Lexi her precious setting long before the Salvatore brothers had ever drawn their first undead breath.
Lexi had stayed fiercely protective of the bloodline through the generations. She had loved Emily's granddaughter, Marie, lingering nearby to offer physical protection whenever the family faced supernatural threats. Centuries later, in the late 20th century, Lexi had quietly sat in the back row of Sheila Bennett's Occult Studies lectures at Whitmore College, watching another generation carry the torch.
And then there was Lacey Bennett—Sheila’s sister, Abby’s aunt—whom Lexi had dated back in 1992. Though their romantic relationship had eventually run its course, the love and deep friendship remained intact. The thought of Damon getting his manipulative, destructive hands on an heirloom belonging to Lacey's family—a powerful, dangerous relic—sent a pulse of pure, protective fury through Lexi's veins.
Damon having that crystal was a disaster in the making. Keeping her expression completely relaxed, Lexi casually rests her left hand on the dark wood of the bar. She turns the lapis lazuli stone of her precious daylight ring inward toward her palm, preserving Emily's ancient gift. Using the durable metal setting of the priceless ring as a focal point, she discreetly taps it with precise, supernatural force against the rim of a heavy glass tumbler sitting on the counter.
Crack. The tumbler shatters cleanly under the strike. Uncaring of the loose glass shards that fall to the ground and crunch silently beneath her shoes, Lexi casually picks up a thick, weighty piece from the broken glass.
Closing her eyes for a microsecond, Lexi taps into the sheer depth of her three-hundred-and-fifty-year-old vampire mind. Mind projection was a fine art, one that younger vampires like Damon rarely mastered beyond basic trickery. Lexi focuses her intent, weaving a concentrated psychic illusion into the jagged piece of glass in her palm. She coats it in a warm, thrumming aura—a fake, intoxicating magical vibration that perfectly mimics the hum of a latent Bennett spell.
Lexi turns back to Caroline, her voice bright and conversational once more. "Hey, Caroline?"
Caroline blinks, her wide, glassy eyes shifting back toward Lexi. She squints slightly, her brow furrowing in mild confusion. "Yes...? Wait, what was your name again?"
Lexi offers a small, dismissive smile. "Doesn't matter, sweetie. Do you know what this is?" Lexi extends her hand, opening her palm to reveal the worthless piece of pretty glass, now shimmering with a heavy, illusory aura of ancient magic in Caroline's compelled eyes.
Caroline gasps softly, her hands flying to her mouth as she stares down at the fragment. "No, but... oh my god, it's so pretty."
"This is the Bennett family amber crystal," Lexi says smoothly, her voice absolute and convincing. "It's exactly what you were looking for."
Caroline’s eyes light up with a sudden, overwhelming wave of relief. The desperate weight on her chest vanishes instantly. "No way! That's what I need! Oh my god, thank you!"
Before Lexi can react, Caroline throws her arms around Lexi's neck, squeezing her in a quick, ecstatic hug. Without another word, the blonde teenager spins on her heel, clutching the sharp piece of glass tightly in her fist, and dashes off through the crowded Grill to find Damon. Lexi turns around slowly, leaning her back against the bar counter. She watches from afar as Caroline excitedly approaches Damon, thrusting the glowing piece of junk into his hands. Damon takes it, his eyes narrowing in suspicion, but the compulsion and the sheer conviction in Caroline's mind temporarily blind him to the fake.
Lexi reaches into her jacket pocket, her fingers brushing against her phone. She keeps a watchful eye on the pair as Caroline knocks back another drink from a passing tray, completely oblivious to the danger she was just in. Lexi draws her phone out, her thumb hovering over the screen. If Damon realizes he’s been tricked while she’s still in town, things are going to get messy very quickly. She opens her contacts and scrolls down to a familiar name, already planning to call Lacey Bennett for a glamour spell to mask her presence just in case.
Taking a small breath of the stale, music-filled air, Lexi taps the screen, holding the phone to her ear as she keeps her eyes locked squarely on Damon Salvatore.
