Greener Pastures Is Better Than Pouring Rain

Summary:

Hogyoku, a creation of Urahara, had the ability to grant wishes as long as it was fed by immense Reiatsu. Urahara sealed it inside Rukia’s body and drained her power to conceal its existence.

Hogyoku, bathed in the immense, wildly uncontrolled power of Ichigo, was suddenly activated. It ignored Rukia’s wish; it ignored Ichigo’s wish; it gravitated toward the strongest desire it sensed—so greedy, so selfish, so utterly desperate.

It was the Quincy spirit within Ichigo, which sought to protect Ichigo by any means necessary, and Hogyoku granted that Quincy spirit’s intense desire. And that is how Ichigo’s path veered from what was originally intended.

The Quincy spirit, having finally gained the power to protect Ichigo, would use that strength to prevent Ichigo from ever becoming involved with the Shinigami and transform him into a Quincy.

Chapter Text

The inner world was a silent expanse of glass skyscrapers turned sideways, standard blue skies hanging overhead in perpetual stillness. Inside the chest of the old man in the tattered black coat, a quiet, catastrophic grief was tearing everything apart.

Ichigo had chosen.

Ossan felt the lingering echo of Rukia’s sword piercing Ichigo’s chest, the foreign, cold torrent of Shinigami power violently washing over the inner world. He had felt Ichigo’s heart swell with desperate resolve—the overwhelming urge to protect his sisters, Karin and Yuzu.

The old man had reached out from the shadows, desperate to be the one to give Ichigo strength, to be the shield that kept the boy safe from harm, war, despair, and pain. But it had been a Soul Reaper’s blade that granted Ichigo strength.

Ossan stood atop a glass tower, his hands trembling within his heavy coat. He had suppressed Ichigo's true power for years, binding his innate strength so he could live a normal, peaceful life. Now, he was forced to watch as Ichigo relented to Rukia's terms—playing the role of a substitute Shinigami in her stead, stepping directly onto the dangerous path Ossan had tried so desperately to shield him from.

I wanted to protect you, Ossan thought, his heart aching with an unbearable grief. Not her. Not any Shinigami. I was supposed to be the one to protect you, Ichigo.

Outside, Rukia told Ichigo she would stay until her power returned, completely unaware of the true horror behind her predicament. Her power hadn't returned because of a seal crafted by Urahara Kisuke—an item designed to hide the Hōgyoku deep inside her Konpaku, using her own spiritual power as fuel to keep its presence concealed from the world.

Neither Urahara nor anyone else knew the true nature of the Hōgyoku. It was not merely a tool of boundary-dissolution; its real power was granting the deep desires of those around it, fueled by Reiatsu.

And right now, it was drowning in the immense, uncontrollable Reiatsu pouring off Kurosaki Ichigo.

The Hōgyoku fed greedily on Ichigo's vast energy. As it activated, it searched for the strongest, most intense desire present at that moment. It bypassed everyone else and locked directly onto Ossan.

I want to be his strength. I want my existence to reach him. I want my Quincy power to protect him!

It was the greedy, desperate, and selfish desire of a spirit who wanted only to shield the boy from his own self-sacrificing habits.

The Hōgyoku granted it.

A brilliant shift occurred deep within Ichigo's soul. For long years, the Quincy manifestation of Ichigo's power—Ossan himself—had been coated and restricted by the Monk's black ink. But under the absolute authority of the Hōgyoku, fed by Ichigo's boundless Reiatsu, that black ink began to dissolve and lift away from Ossan entirely.

The grant went even further. The Hōgyoku bestowed complete immunity against the power of names, ensuring Ichigo could never be renamed by Ichibei Hyōsube, alongside absolute immunity against the power of black controlled by the Monk.

Ossan looked down at his hands as the pitch-black stain vanished into nothingness. His Quincy power was finally free. A fierce, unwavering vow took root in his chest. He would always protect Ichigo, even from Ichigo's own martyr habits that he so deeply despised.

No more, Ossan swore. You will not carry their burdens, Ichigo. I will burn away every foreign parasite that tries to drag you into their war.

Using Sklaverai, the absolute subjugation of Reishi, Ossan reached out and decisively severed the connection between Ichigo and Rukia's power.

In the real world, sitting on the floor of his bedroom, Ichigo suddenly gasped. The foreign Shinigami energy bound to him was instantly cut and pushed away.

"Rukia... wait," Ichigo said, clutching his chest in confusion. "Your power... it's gone from me. I can feel the connection snap."

Rukia blinked, feeling a sudden, slight shift in her own spirit body as the lingering fragments of her energy snapped back to her.

"Did... did my power return to me?" Rukia asked, genuinely mistaken by the sudden cut. She assumed her body was simply reclaiming what was hers.

In the shadows of Ichigo's mind, Ossan adjusted his glasses, his newly freed Quincy energy humming with divine light. Ichigo was his to protect now—and no Shinigami, Monk, or twisted fate would ever take that away from him again.

The next morning, the air inside Ichigo’s room was heavy with an odd lingering chill. Rukia stood near the window, clutching her chest with a faint frown. Despite the connection snapping the previous night and her energy returning, she felt strangely drained.

"Ichigo," Rukia said, her voice laced with quiet frustration. "I still haven't fully recovered. If there's a Hollow... you'll have to handle it."

Ichigo nodded without hesitation. He closed his eyes, searching deep within himself for any lingering trace of Rukia's Shinigami energy to draw upon.

There was nothing. Not a single drop of her cold, icy power remained.

Confused, Ichigo reached deeper into his soul, probing past the empty void. Suddenly, his spiritual senses brushed against something else—something dark, shadowy, and unexpectedly warm. It wrapped around his soul like a heavy, protective blanket.

Ichigo pulled on it.

A sharp hum vibrated through the air. In a flash of dark light, Ichigo’s form transformed. Gone was the standard black Shihakushō of a Shinigami. Instead, he stood clad in a rugged white shirt, dark pants, tinted shades over his eyes, and a long, billowy dark coat that flowed around his ankles like woven shadows.

Ichigo blinked, looking down at his hands and adjusting the shades on his face in utter bewilderment. "What the... what is this?"

Rukia stared at him, her eyes wide as she inspected the strange, dark attire. "It seems... when my power left your body, it acted as a catalyst. This isn't my power, Ichigo. This is your own dormant potential finally awakening."

Ichigo thought about it for a second. It made sense. Her power had unlocked the door, but this dark, protective coat was entirely his own. "Yeah... that must be it."

Desperate to test his new abilities, Ichigo focused his mind, channeling energy into his arm. Instantly, faint, glowing blue lines spread across his skin like a precise, radiant grid. The moment the lines formed, a single name reverberated clearly in his mind: Blut Vene.

He could feel it—an absolute, impenetrable defensive skill running through his veins. Curious, Ichigo shifted his focus from defense to pure aggression. The blue lines flickered and altered their pattern, pulsing with offensive power as another name echoed: Blut Arterie.

Ichigo grinned slightly, contemplating his newly awakened nature. My power is surprisingly straightforward, he thought. One for defense, one for attack.

As he dug deeper into the instinctual knowledge flowing into his mind, he realized Blut Vene had a powerful variant—Blut Vene Anhaben—which could project an external defensive barrier outward. If I can expand this barrier, Ichigo realized with a surge of relief, I can completely protect Yuzu and Karin whenever a Hollow attacks the house.

Then, Ichigo glanced down at his billowy, coat of shadows. "If the clothes are part of my power... what does this shadow stuff actually do?"

The moment the thought crossed his mind, the shadow beneath his boots began to rise like liquid ink. It pooled into a swirling, pitch-black portal directly on the floorboards. Driven by curiosity, Ichigo stepped into the dark void.

The world blurred for a fraction of a second, and suddenly, Ichigo found himself standing on the other side of his bedroom.

Rukia, who had instinctively jumped into the shadow right behind him, tumbled out onto his bed, gasping in complete shock. "What just happened?!"

Ichigo looked around his room, a sudden, profitable feelings washing over him. The instinctual knowledge of his Quincy heritage imparted the name of the technique: Schatten.

"It's shadow travel," Ichigo said, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "It lets me step through shadows to instantly teleport anywhere I've ever visited before!"

"Instantly...?" Rukia breathed, looking at the floor where the portal had closed. "That is ridiculously convenient."

"Wait, it gets better," Ichigo added, realizing another crucial detail. "I don't even have to leave my physical body to use this. I don't need to turn into a spirit body like you Soul Reapers do. I can just use my powers as I am."

Rukia nodded approvingly, crossing her arms. "That simplifies things immensely. No need to worry about leaving your physical body lying around where your family might find it."

A huge grin spread across Ichigo's face as he realized the most practical application of his new power. "Man, this means I can sleep in and still never be late for school again! I can just use Schatten to pop right onto the school rooftop, walk down the stairs to my classroom, and nobody will ever suspect a thing!"

Rukia couldn't help but smile at his sheer enthusiasm. "I certainly won't complain. Shadow travel is definitely better than running across town on foot."

Deep inside Ichigo's inner world, Ossan stood atop a glass skyscraper, watching the boy smile through his shades. The old man look satisfied. His power was finally protecting Ichigo—not just from monsters, but making his everyday life a little easier, just as a protector would hope for.

Later that night, the sharp, hollow screech of a spirit-eating beast cut through the quiet streets of Karakura Town.

Rukia pointed toward the alleyway three blocks over, and Ichigo didn't even hesitate. With a simple thought, the shadows beneath his feet flared up, swallowing him whole. A heartbeat later, he materialized directly on a rooftop overlooking the alley, stepping out of the dark void completely intact—no soul-separator required.

Below them, a massive, grotesque Hollow with a bone mask and elongated claws was cornering a faint, terrified soul.

Ichigo dropped from the roof, his dark coat billowing around him like a cloak of night. Before the Hollow could even turn its head, Ichigo focused his mind. The glowing blue grid of Blut Arterie flashed violently across his skin, flooding his muscles with explosive, concentrated power.

He didn't need a clunky, oversized Zanpakutō. Ichigo simply drove a single, energy-infused strike straight into the monster's chest.

BOOM!

The force of the blow shattered the Hollow’s mask instantly, turning the beast into a shower of harmless Reishi particles before it could even unleash a roar. The entire fight was over in less than three seconds.

Ichigo stood in the quiet alleyway, blinking down at his fist in sheer disbelief. There was no strain, no gasping for breath, no feeling of forcing his body to accept foreign energy.

"Whoa..." Ichigo muttered, flexing his fingers as the blue veins faded back beneath his skin. "That... was way easier than I thought. Compared to when I was using your power yesterday, this felt... totally natural. Like breathing."

Rukia landed lightly on the pavement beside him, dusting off her sleeves. Hearing his astonished tone, she looked at him for a second before bursting into a sharp, mocking laugh.

"Pfft—hahaha!" Rukia crossed her arms, smirking up at him as if he had just stated that water was wet. "Well, obviously, you idiot! What did you expect?"

Ichigo’s eyebrows twitched, his amazed expression instantly souring into a scowl. "Hey! What's so funny?!"

"You, stating the absolute obvious!" Rukia scoffed, shaking her head with a snicker. "Of course my power felt awkward to you—it was mine. I feel most comfortable using my own power, and you feel most comfortable using yours. It’s yours, Ichigo. It belongs to your soul. Why on earth would it feel anything other than natural?"

Ichigo scowled harder, crossing his arms and huffing as he turned his face away. "Alright, alright, mock the guy who just saved the day, why don't you..."

Yet, despite his irritated pout, deep down, Ichigo couldn't deny the truth in her words. For the first time in his life, he felt truly connected to the strength flowing through his veins.

Inside the quiet expanse of Ichigo’s soul, Ossan allowed the faintest, proudest smile to touch his lips. That's right, Ichigo, the old man thought softly, watching his boy stand tall. It's yours. And as long as I am here, no one will ever make you feel weak again.
