Firelord Ozai sat illegally on the throne.
Years ago, he had privately been forced to accept an Agni Kai with his brother, Iroh. And Ozai did not win.
But instead of sharing this to the world and losing his status as Firelord, Ozai saw the perfect opportunity. His stupid son spoke up during the war meeting, and had to be punished.
The perfect opportunity to get rid of his useless brother too.
Months later, Zuko and Iroh were on Zuko’s warship. The Prince was finally healed enough to train again, and Iroh was teaching him. And although his nephew was acting utterly disrespectful towards him, he kept trying. Kept trying to free his nephew from the pain.
A few months later again, Iroh decided to fool his little nephew. It would be better for him. He tricked him into an Agni Kai, Zuko not thinking it was official. Because where would they be fighting for?
And Iroh lost on purpose, still not letting the younger prince know.
Zuko now officially was the true Firelord.
But he doesn’t know that.
