Chapter Text

Chapter One — The Way Home

For years, Sasuke had known nothing but the next destination, the next village, the next investigation, the next step forward. Moving had been much easier than staying. On the road, there were no questions waiting for him and no one expecting him to become someone he wasn't sure he could be. No one know him, his past, who he is right now or how he is in future.

But now, standing beneath the evening sky, Sasuke found himself looking back. Konoha was somewhere beyond the horizon. He should have felt nothing. Instead, there was a strange heaviness in his chest like as if he been drowning in guilt.

Why am I hesitating? He actually already knew the answer. Returning meant facing everything he had spent years keeping at a distance. The village. His past. Naruto. And Sakura.

He had spent so long believing that leaving was the only way he could atone. Yet somewhere along the journey, he had begun to understand that running forever wasn't redemption either.
Perhaps that was why, this time, he didn't turn away. Sasuke looked toward the horizon one last time.

"It's time to go home."

The words felt unfamiliar make his chest heavier. But he didn't take them back. He turned toward Konoha and began walking.

---

Konoha looked almost the same. The road and scent are still familiar to him except the building are much different now

Sasuke moved through the village unnoticed, his eyes briefly taking in the familiar streets. Children ran past him. Shops remained open despite the fading light. People laughed and talked as they went about their evening. It should have felt like a place he had left behind. Instead, it felt strangely close. Sasuke didn't stop to examine the feeling.

He went straight to the Hokage's office. Opening the door without knocking first. Kakashi looked up when he entered. For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Kakashi's eye curved. "Just like usual? Welcome back Sasuke."

Sasuke paused, Kakashi words were simple. Still, something about hearing them made him uncomfortable.

"I came to report." He said

Kakashi's expression shifted immediately, and Sasuke stepped forward.

The report was straightforward. He explained what he had discovered during his journey, the information he had gathered, and the threats he had dealt with. Kakashi listened carefully, asking questions whenever necessary.

Sasuke preferred it that way. Facts were easy. He doesnt need to explain his emotion or his feeling along the way.

When the report ended, Kakashi leaned back. "And now? What are your plan?" He asked

Sasuke's eyes moved toward the window.
"I'll stay for a week."

Kakashi's eyebrow rose. "A week? Why a week?" He asked

Sasuke nodded. "I need to see if I can settle here."

Kakashi seemed to understand anyway.
"And if you can't?" He asked

"I'll leave again." The answer came too quickly from Sasuke mouth

Kakash notice it, how Sasuke answered too fast. But the Hokage didn't argue.Instead, he reached for the communication device.
"Then you should see your teammates."

Sasuke's gaze sharpened. Feeling not prepared for any of this. "Why?" He asked.

Kakashi's eye curved. "Because you're home and they are your family."

Sasuke didn't answer.

---

Naruto arrived first. The door opened with far more force than necessary. "Kakashi-sensei! What's so important..." Naruto stopped and his eyes landed on Sasuke. For a moment, there was complete silence. Then his face broke into a grin.

"Sasuke!" He called him with a grin

Sasuke barely had time to react before Naruto rushed toward him. He stepped aside and Naruto stumbled past him.

"You're still too slow," Sasuke said.

Naruto straightened and glared at him.
"You're still a jerk."

Then the door opened again. And this time, Sasuke couldn't ignore what he felt. Sakura coming into the room and freezes in front of the door "Sasuke?"

For a moment, Sasuke forgot about the conversation. She looked familiar. And yet, somehow, she didn't. Her hair was longer than he remembered. Her features had matured, and there was a steadiness in her expression that hadn't been there before. When she called his name, something tightened in his chest. He didn't understand why.

He had heard his name spoken countless times during his journey. Enemies had shouted it. Allies had spoken it. Naruto had probably said it more times than anyone. But hearing it from her felt different.

"You're back?" Sakura says looking at him confused

Sasuke nodded and answered "hn"

He wanted to say something more, but the words wouldn't come. Sakura looked away first, and Sasuke noticed the slight nervousness in her expression. He had expected anger, perhaps even tears, or the same determination she had always shown whenever she looked at him. Instead, she simply stood there without asking him to stay or leave. Somehow, that unsettled him more than he expected. He realized he had been staring and quickly looked away. She's changed, he thought. But perhaps it wasn't only Sakura who had changed. Maybe he was simply no longer sure how to look at her.
