Work Text:
I am blessed.
Yuuji thinks he could've screamed these words for his entire life—from his first, shaky words to his last, dying breath—and it would still never ring true; completely and entirely false, the one thing in his life that is certain, despite how much he's desperately tried to believe it. There is nothing that could convince him, now, of any alternative.
Someone blessed is someone written out of the narrative. A person who doesn't have to choose who they save, who doesn't have to murder in an attempt to make a difference in the world. Someone oblivious to the horrors of cursed spirits and jujutsu, who doesn't have to watch their friends die in front of them. There is something so hopeless in being the only one who has the power to do anything, really, because he has no choice in the matter that way. Even if Yuuji was granted the chance to go back to his old life in Sendai, he thinks he would still do everything over and over again. He was born to be a vessel; a cog, a killer. It was decided for him the minute that monster held him as Yuuji cried his first tears in being brought to this world. He is cursed with the weight of jujutsu sorcery and the darkness of this line of work. That is his fate, and how can he escape it? Being cowardly discredits all the lives he's taken already.
The unshakable shackle of blood covers his hands, for it has always been him. I am cursed. I am a curse. For if it hadn't been me, it would've been someone else And, so, I am a curse. Yuuji is absolved from the difficulty of choice, but that is much worse than any other possibility for his soul.
Then, there's Fushiguro Megumi, the boy who saves not out of obligation but because he wants to. He's something Yuuji cannot comprehend at all.
A boy who tells him it is not his fault, and that it's okay. Someone who shares the same crescent mark branded on their cheeks—knows the blaze of a soul foreign to their own, that manipulates and destroys their sense of self until they feel just as evil as the devil residing in their mindscape. A boy who pulls him away, farther from the edge; their fingers interlocking until the hunger that overwhelms Yuuji is not one of blood-thirst, but a selfish desire to hold onto this boy's hand until he can't anymore. Instead of falling into a cycle of hatred and despair and suffering and fear, that same boy is the one to tell him to snap out of it. Start by saving me, Itadori.
The only one who understands. The only one who's able to look into cold eyes that have lost their spark and see a person.
It's not "I am blessed."
It's "I have been granted a blessing."
Fushiguro Megumi. The light at the end of the tunnel.
