Bugs and Daffy were casually strolling away from the ice cream stand set up on the pier, all the while carrying with them two cups of frozen confectionery in their hands. It was a cool and beautiful, breezy day as they both made their way down the boardwalk while contentedly spooning their respective treats into their mouths. They strode along in relatively peaceful silence, enjoying the others’ company as they rounded on the corner nearest them. They ambled their way over to an open umbrella shaded bistro table and dropped themselves into the awaiting metal seats. Daffy unceremoniously plopped his cup down in front of him, giving the bunny an apologetic look over being so crass after doing so, while Bugs rolled his eyes and placed his in a far softer, more gingerly manner. As they continued their leisurely snacking, their resting, idle hands sitting upon the tabletop began drifting towards one another and, behind the cover of their cups, entwined comfortably, a hand appended upon the other, out of sight. The two of them attempted to stifle affectionate grins as they returned to enjoying their desserts.
Daffy, after a time of enthusiastically delving into his afters, noticed that Bugs did not share his same energy and had actually slowed to a near halt over his own. He observed his lover with a fixed curiosity and noticed that his sight was cast downwards towards the table. He followed his gaze to see that the bunny was peering intently at the modest and unadorned silver band around his finger. He was rubbing it adoringly with his thumb as he smiled warmly and somewhat dreamily at it.
Daffy’s intrigue was quickly replaced with a grimace filled with an abashed and contrite temperament upon seeing it and felt compelled to say something. He opened his bill to speak, albeit in a hushed, apologetic whisper, and bemoaned to the bunny,”...hey…. Bugsth…I’m….I’m thsorry for the ring not lookin’ like a, uh….traditional engagement ring…I…wanted it look and be justh like one…with a diamond and everything, but….ya’ know…it might…”
“.....draw too much attention? I know ‘dat, Daffy,” Bugs interjected as his eyes raised from his hand and up to the remorseful, weary eyes of his lover,”...I know why ya’ did it ‘dis way. I ain’t bothered by it, really I’m not…”
“But, Bugsth….it…it thshould’ve been more like a normal engagement ring. You dethserve thsometihng better than what I could….,” he trailed dispiritedly before Bugs cut him off again. The bunny briefly placed a delicate, grey furred hand on the cheek of Daffy’s bill and gave him a stern, yet still lovingly impassioned, expression before continuing where he left off just moments ago.
“Now listen, Daffy….it ain’t whatya’ bought ‘dat mattas’ ta’ me, ok? It’s whatya’ meant by it. Ya’ see, it wouldn’ matta’ if it was made outta’ papuh’ or string, because….well….I know what it’s all really about….,” he took a pause and softened his countenance to be milder and more affectionate before stating in a more tender tone,”... it’s….it’s about love and…you wantin’ me ta’ be yours….foreva’ and….and always….till’ deh’ end, right?”
Daffy looked on at the rabbit before him in earnest and sighed deeply, strained worriment still present in his heart and on his face. He felt his frigid unease begin to subside somewhat and release its hold on him, permitting him to ask,”... you’re thsure? It, it…it really meansth that much to you? Even if it’sth justh a…. plain looking little ring?”
Bugs nodded with a warm and gentle smile as he reciprocated,”....yeah, Daff….even with it bein’ a plain lookin’ little ring.”
The once discomposed mallard perked up a little over hearing this and chuckled softly,”...heh…you can find the beauty in anything, huh?”
“I wanna’ marry you, don’t I?” he responded wryly while maintaining a romantic demeanor about himself. The two of them erupted into a small bout of giggles, feeling the remaining tension between them swiftly wash itself away and out of their lives. They gaily returned to their now melting desserts with renewed zeal, wide and vibrant smiles still plastered to their faces as they enjoyed the rest of their evening while sitting in a felicitous serenity.
