Work Text:
Tails was sitting in his workshop, surrounded by old electronics he had pulled out of the garage, carefully rewiring a few spare parts. The gentle clinking of his tools filled the room until a soft knock echoed against the door. Turning around, he saw Cream standing at the entrance.
“Hi Tails! Would you like to come over to my house to play for a little while?” Cream asked with a warm smile, peering through the doorway.
Tails paused, his hand hovering over a circuit board. He had initially planned to spend the rest of the evening working, but deep down he knew he really needed a break.
“Plus, my mom made ice cream and we have mints,” Cream added encouragingly, her ears twitching with excitement.
“I am in, let us go!” Tails replied without hesitation, setting his tools aside.
Leaving the workshop behind, they took to the sky and flew together toward Vanilla's house.
As the two kids flew together through the sky toward Vanilla's house, an enraged shout echoed from a distance, cutting through the quiet afternoon air.
“Give it back already!” Knuckles' voice boomed with intense frustration.
Tails and Cream turned their heads toward the sound and spotted Rouge the Bat gliding at top speed, clutching the Master Emerald tightly in her hands as usual.
“Giving it back right away would take all the fun out of it, sweetcheeks! Come and get it if you want it!” Rouge called back in her usual playful, teasing tone.
Catching sight of the two younger heroes flying nearby, the bat offered them a casual wave and a mischievous smile, as if she were not actively in the middle of a high-stakes robbery, before accelerating and speeding away.
A second later, Knuckles blasted past them like a red rocket in hot pursuit. The sheer gust of wind from his speed knocked Tails off balance mid air, causing him to stumble. Cream reacted instantly, grabbing his arm with a firm grip until he managed to regain his footing in the sky.
“Are you okay, Tails?” Cream asked softly, holding onto him with a look of concern.
“Yeah, I am fine, it was just a little push,” Tails replied with a relieved smile, adjusting his flight rhythm.
Once they arrived, Vanilla greeted the young fox at the entrance with her usual gentle warmth.
“Welcome Tails, make yourself at home,” Vanilla said softly as she stepped aside.
Tails took a seat at the kitchen table, and the two kids immediately began catching up on everything they had been doing over the past few weeks.
“How are your recent missions going?” Cream asked, leaning forward with genuine curiosity.
“They are going well,” Tails explained, resting his chin in his hand. “I am still striving to become more independent from Sonic and grow stronger on my own.”
“You should never give up,” Cream told him, placing a hand over her heart with a reassuring smile. “I see so much potential in you to become a true hero.”
“Thank you, Cream, that means a lot,” Tails said, blushing slightly just as Vanilla brought over two bowls filled with sweet treats.
After finishing their ice cream and mints, they moved over to the small activity table to spend some time coloring. Cream drew a simple, adorable flower with bright pink petals, while Tails carefully sketched a highly detailed drawing of Sonic kicking Eggman into the distance. Both of them broke into giggles at the stark contrast between their artwork before neatly pinning the pages onto the wall where Cream always displayed her favorite drawings for her mother.
Wanting to relax a bit more, they headed upstairs to Cream's bedroom. As they walked into her bedroom, they found Cheese flying peacefully near the window.
“Hi, Cheese! Look, Tails came over to watch movies with us!” Cream greeted with a bright smile as the little Chao fluttered around them, letting out a cheerful “Chao, chao!”.
The three of them settled on the couch in front of the television to enjoy the show. However, halfway through the movie, a sudden graphic jump scare flashed across the screen. Caught off guard, Tails, Cream, and Cheese gasped and instinctively wrapped their arms around one another in a tight hug, squeezing their eyes shut.
Tails quickly grabbed the remote to change the channel to something lighter, and after their quiet heart to heart about adventures and Vanilla's concerns, exhaustion finally caught up with the two young heroes.
As the bright colors of the animated show lit up the room, Tails turned his attention back to her.
“When do you think you will join us on adventures again?” Tails asked softly. “It has been months since I last saw you out with Amy and Big.”
Cream sighed gently, her shoulders drooping as she looked down at her lap.
“Mother rarely lets me go out anymore because she fears I might get hurt,” Cream explained sadly. “I tried telling her that other kids, like Marine or Charmy, are out there facing dangerous situations, but she just told me that I am her daughter and I have to follow her rules.”
“You should try to understand your mother a little bit,” Tails offered gently, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. “She is only acting out of deep love and concern for you.”
“I know,” Cream agreed, nodding softly. “But I still miss being out there with everyone. Ever since the very first day I met Sonic, Amy, Knuckles, and you, all of you inspired me to want to explore the world and help defeat Dr. Eggman. Everything was fine until my mother started insisting more and more that I stay safe at home. I really wish I could go on adventures with everyone again... especially with you.”
A quiet hush fell over the bedroom as those last words hung in the air. Both of their faces flushed bright red. Completely flustered, they quickly pulled their gazes apart, staring intently at the cartoon running on the screen in total silence.
A little while later, Cheese noticed that both of them had fallen fast asleep on the couch, curled up together. Moving as quietly as possible, the little Chao took the blanket from the side, lifted it through the air, and gently draped it over Tails and Cream to keep them warm and cozy.
Satisfied with his work, Cheese curled up at the foot of the couch to rest, just before Vanilla gently opened the door to check on them and smiled at the heartwarming sight.
