Work Text:
It had been another rough day, deadlines to meet, tensions high.
Kami had already lost his temper and stormed out, while Mana and Gackt were verbally at each other's throats.
It wasn't that unusual. They were a band that spent 100s of hours together. There were always arguments, some small, some big. Today's had gotten out of hand.
Yu~ki just had his eyes closed, head leaned back against the wall.
“Hey.”
Yu~ki instantly recognized Közi's voice. He hadn't even heard him approach.
“Hey.”
“Let's get out of here.” Közi whispered, reaching over and resting his hand over the bassist's hand.
“Are you kidding?” Yu~ki gasped, opening his eyes and sitting up.
Közi pressed a finger to his lips to silence him, eyes flickering towards where the other two stood.
“We're not getting much done. Besides, we're long overdue for a snack break.” Közi pointed out. “We'll be back before they notice.” He promised
Yu~ki hesitated, heart torn. He didn't really want to stay here, but he didn't want the others to get upset at him for leaving.
But if Közi and him left together…
“Alrignt.” Yu~ki whispered, taking his boyfriend's hand.
The two were completely silent as they snuck out, running off until they were outside and down the street.
Yu~ki felt lighter once they were away. “Those three can really get into it, can't they?’ He laughed, rubbing his neck.
“Yeah? I try not to pay too much attention to it.” Közi admitted, shoving his hands in his pockets.
“I suppose it's just routine by now.” Yu~ki commented, walking at a steady pace next to him. “This is far enough.” he decided once they had reached a gas station near them. However, as he started to walk towards it, Yu~ki noticed he was alone.
Turning back around, he spotted Közi still by the road, cigarette placed between his lips as he took out a lighter to ignite.
Yu~ki paused, glancing at the store and then back at his boyfriend. He decided to join Közi again. “Hey, were you coming?” He asked.
Közi just gave him a sassy look, eyebrow raised in question as he exhaled smoke. “Yu~ki-chan, they don't have that chocolate you like, remember?”
Yu~ki blinked before embarrassment settled in. “That's okay, there's really no need-”
“Let's go further. That shop is only another 10 minutes away. They have your favorite.” Közi pointed out. He reached into his pocket, pulling another cigarette out of the pack and offering it to Yu~ki.
Once again, Yu~ki was conflicted. They could get snacks here, and return to the studio. The others wouldn't be too upset.
Then the bassist returned his gaze to the cigarette Közi was holding out, and the promise of Yu~ki's favorite treat.
“Oh alright.” Yu~ki sighed, reaching for the cigarette. To his surprise, Közi lit it for him.
A simple gesture, yet felt so intimate between them.
“T-thanks.” Yu~ki managed to choke out as he took his first drag.
The two continued on, walking side by side and chatting as they smoked.
Before long, they had reached the store, going inside and picking out a few snacks.
They didn't say a word until they had stepped out of the store, sitting on the curb.
“Hmm, would you share your chocolate with me, Yu~ki?” Közi asked, leaning into his boyfriend's side.
“Ah, sure. But why didn't you just buy some?” The bassist asked.
Közi just shrugged as they both turned to the side to face each other.
Yu~ki held out a piece of chocolate, however, his boyfriend just gave him a smug look and then opened his mouth.
Yu~ki's cheeks flushed at Közi's behavior, but he decided to play along, putting the chocolate in his mouth.
“Mhm!’ Közi hummed.
Yu~ki turned, taking a piece for himself. The chocolate instantly melted on his tongue, and he was brought to a pleasant mood.
Közi had a few of his own snacks, just humming and eating cheerfully. Still, Yu~ki noticed the way Közi's leg was bouncing up and down.
“Are you alright?” He couldn't help but ask.
“Eh? I'm fine.”
Yu~ki tilted his head, studying the guitar player for a couple moments. “I don't think they'll notice if we're gone for a while.” he decided.
Közi grinned at that, reaching over and shoving him playfully. “I bet they're still at each other's throats, don't you think?”
Yu~ki nodded, taking another bite of chocolate. “Does it ever bother you? I know you said you try not to pay attention but…”
“Eh?” Közi took a sip of his drink.
“The fighting.” Yu~ki sighed.
“Ah…” Közi pressed his lips together, staring off. “We all work together, I suppose I'm used to it by now.” he started off, then glanced at Yu~ki. “We all get into arguments, don't we?” he half laughed.
Yu~ki nodded. “I suppose it's just part of the routine. Maybe we should all plan something, blow off some of that tension with everyone.”
Közi rested his head on Yu~ki's shoulder. “I think that's a wonderful idea. Maybe we can bring it up, mention that we're gonna go drinking, and invite everyone along. I think drunk karaoke could be fun!”
“I embarrassed myself last time.” Yu~ki shook his head laughing. “I could barely stay standing by the end of the night.”
“Indeed, I had to sweep you up in my arms.” Közi reached forward, cupping the bassist's cheek with his hand. “I've never seen you such a stuttering mess.”
At the contact, and the memory, Yu~ki's face started to heat up. “Well, that was before I asked you out.” He mumbled.
“Mhm, that was a nice day, though.” Közi smiled softly, letting his hand fall to his side and rest on the ground.
Yu~ki looked down between them, placing his hand over Közi's. “Thanks, for sneaking away with me.”
Közi leaned into him, a content smile on his face. “Ah, we weren't getting anything done there anyways. I'd rather run off with you instead. You know, makeout in the hallway or something.”
Yu~ki looked back up at him. “What would the others think?”
“I don't care what they think when I'm with you.” Közi shrugged. “I just know that we have each other's backs, no matter what happens.” He said, glancing down at his food. “Well, I suppose we've been away long enough.” He said, getting up to toss the trash away. “Shall we go check on them?”
Yu~ki got to his feet, watching the guitarist with a small grin. “Nah, let them argue.” He said, walking over and taking his hand.
“Then what shall we do, my dear count?” Közi teased with a wink.
“Maybe we could go to the park and I don't know…” he trailed off.
“Make out?” Közi flashed a smile.
“I wouldn't be opposed.” Yu~ki laughed, giving his hand a squeeze.
-
The sun was beginning to set when they went back to Közi's apartment.
Közi was putting together a few things for a quick dinner when the phone rang.
Out of habit, Yu~ki reached forward and answered the phone, bringing it to his ear.
“Hello?”
“...”
Közi glanced over at him.
“I did call Közi's house, right?” Mana's voice came through.
Yu~ki blinked, suddenly realizing his mistake. “Y-yes.”
Közi walked over, an amused look on his face. “What is it, Mana, I thought you were busy?” He teased, wrapping his arms around Yu~ki from behind.
“Ah, well, I was going to call both of you anyway. About today, I'm-”
“Forgive and forget.” Yu~ki hummed. “We'll see you next week, Mana-chan. And oh, do let Gackt and Kami know that we're all going out for Karaoke next week. You all better be there.” He teased, giving Közi a look.
There was a moment of silence on the other end, and then an amused sigh. “I'll leave you two to it, then.”
The couple giggled, setting the phone aside as Yu~ki wrapped his arms around Közi.
“Answering my phone now, for me, hmm?” Közi teased, leaning in close with a playful grin.
“Oh just a habit, it seems like we do everything together nowadays.” Yu~ki sighed. “Now, what can I help out with for dinner?” He asked, brushing Közi's hair out of his face.
Közi leaned in, giving him a quick peck on the lips. “You already helped me enough today.” He promised, stepping away to get back to meal prepping.
Yu~ki stood there a few moments, considering Közi's words. Közi had been the one to pull Yu~ki away from the stress and yet Közi was the one saying Yu~ki had helped…
Then the bassist remembered those faint moments, when Közi had been quiet earlier, or his legs had been bouncing, Közi's eyes looking away. Perhaps Közi just hid those feelings in a different way. Yet now, his bandmate showed no signs of his earlier anxiety, just humming along as he prepared a meal for the two of them.
Perhaps the company of each other alone was enough to provide a temporary sanctuary from those outside worries.
“Then I'll just be right here, ready to lend a hand if neeed.” Yu~ki whispered.
