You Gave Me Courage

Summary:

"I'm so sorry, I hope I'm not overstepping," she said, her cheeks pink. She brushed a strand of blonde hair behind one of her ears. "But I wanted to tell you guys that you are such a beautiful couple. Seeing you out like that has given me the courage to come out to my family and tell my crush that I like her."

Work Text:

"Good luck for the playoffs!" Ilya nodded at the group of hockey fans standing in front of him, his left arm wrapped around Shane's waist while his right hand was holding several shopping bags. They had just done their shopping and had been strolling through the mall when some fans approached them and asked for autographs which they happily gave. Most of the time, the people of Ottawa were used to seeing them out and about, but every now and then, they were still asked for pictures, autographs or just a chat about hockey.

"Thank you guys," Shane said, a smile on his lips while he leaned a little more against Ilya. "Hopefully, this year we'll bring home the cup." The fans - a group of very young people - waved at them and then walked away. Shane and Ilya smiled at each other and turned to be on their way again as well when one of the young women suddenly showed up again. She looked kind of nervous and Ilya curiously cocked his head to the side, waiting for her to speak up.

"I'm so sorry, I hope I'm not overstepping," she said, her cheeks pink. She brushed a strand of blonde hair behind one of her ears. "But I wanted to tell you guys that you are such a beautiful couple. Seeing you out like that has given me the courage to come out to my family and tell my crush that I like her. We're engaged now." Ilya's expression softened and he smiled at her. "That's a very sweet thing to say. Also you were very brave. Congratulations."

Shane chimed in, his cheeks a little pink now as well. It was the cutest thing. "Thank you. We wish you a lifetime of happiness together." he said and Ilya could feel his husband press against him a little more. Her eyes a little misty, the young woman smiled at them, brightly. "Thank you so much. I hope you'll be this happy for the rest of your lives too." Then, she left.

Ilya felt one of Shane's hands wander up his back and he looked at his husband. Shane looked quite emotional and there was the most beautiful little smile on his lips. He couldn't help it - Ilya leaned in and brushed a soft kiss to Shane's cheek, kissing his gorgeous freckles. That didn't seem to satisfy Shane, though. He chased Ilya's lips to steal a proper kiss from him.

"I love you," Shane then whispered quietly. "So much." Hearing that made Ilya's heart jump in his chest because most of the time, Shane wasn't too fond of being overly touchy or sappy in public. He beamed at the man that still made his heart flutter and his knees weak after they had been married for over three years and leaned in for another kiss. "I love you too, Shane. Like crazy."

Deeply, they looked into each other's eyes. It almost was like Shane was looking for something in Ilya's eyes and when he found it, he hugged him closer so their cheeks were pressed together. "If I could, I'd marry you again," he said. Ilya blinked and then smiled even wider. "I mean, there's lots of people that renew their vows." Shane brought a little bit of distance between them and looked at Ilya out of eyes full of excitement.

"Will you marry me again, Ilya?" he asked and Ilya grabbed his hand. "Of course. I'd marry you again a thousand times. Every year for the rest of our lives if that's what you want." Shane grinned and he looked so happy that Ilya fell in love with him all over again right then and there, in the middle of a mall. "Then let's do that. And this time, we'll bring chairs."
