You're My Best Friend.

Summary:

She’s terrified. They’ve been friends for so long that the fear of ruining what they have reigns supreme over her brain-eating unsaid feelings. But it’s unfair, she thinks, it’s unfair to their hypothetical future partners who would have to deal with the lingering tension in the air every time the two of them get an inch bit too close, it’s unfair to their friends who have lost sleep and their minds trying to make sense of the blurry lines they’ve drawn, it’s unfair to Anthony who has been nothing but honest about everything he’s ever felt about her, it’s unfair. It’s unfair because every time her friends have come up to her for relationship advice she’s always said “go get what you want,” and yet here she is. She’s been so unfair.

Or

5 times Hanbon friendzones Anthony and 1 time she finally admits the truth.

Chapter 1: Platonic Marriage

Bunch of Friends talk about fake marriage during a gloomy afternoon.

or

Anthony blunders and Hanbon is confused.

Chapter Text

The first time it happened, she didn’t think much of it.

The thunder lights up the dark outdoors for a split second and they all flinch, “You sure you still plan to go home later?” Anthony asks her wide-eyed, they were meant to film a video today but as if the gods above hate their guts, the skies suddenly started pouring rain the exact moment they put their feet out the door. Now they’re stranded in the goffice with nothing to do.

She turns to look at the man at his computer, “I’ll wait it out a bit more and see” she smiled, Anthony gives a small nod to that as he looks towards the little light that seeps through the small windows of the garage door, he takes a deep breath before standing up to join her and Will on the couch. Silence fills the room as the three of them take part in a mind-hazing session of doomscrolling, as if the humidity and gloomy weather was starting to make its way into their souls.

“Boo!” Coy pops out from the door, startling everyone including Hanbon who lets out a scream, Coy just laughs and whispers a soft “Sorry” as he walks in, throwing the box of Avengers Cards Against Humanity on the floor. The sound it makes catches everyone’s attention as he sits down on the floor before looking up at the three pairs of eyes staring directly at him, “Oh I’m sorry, did you guys wanna play the Friends edition instead?” he jokes, earning an eye roll from Anthony and a head shake from Hanbon.

“Nobody wants to play this stupid card game” Will snickers, immediately unlocking his phone to go back to scrolling before Coy snatches it from his hand to stop him, “Hey!” Will yells, trying to get his phone back, they all start laughing as chaos ensues, and somehow it turns into the four of them chasing each other around and playfighting until their lungs and legs got tired.

It’s moments like this that makes Hanbon feel sentimental, starting the channel sure did change her life in the most phenomenal way. She’s been close with Anthony since what feels like thousands of lifetimes ago and while there’s no doubt in her mind that if multiple lifetimes were real then they’ve definitely found each other in every single one, she’s also glad to find people that feel like new souls, people that give her a level of happiness that has the old soul inside her asking, Why did I not find them sooner?

They’re now scattered around the room. Anthony went back to his desk, Will decided he was gonna take up the whole entirety of the couch and lay down so Hanbon helps herself to the chair, and Coy takes one of the office chairs, sitting comfortably with his right leg folded underneath him.

“I saw like five Hanpo edits back to back on my For You Page today, I thought I was going crazy” Coy laughs as he stretches his arms, They all laugh at that too, they’ve been on the internet for so many years that they’ve all grown some sort of an immunity from all the noise that comes with it. “Wait, what if you guys just marry each other for the bit?” He follows up a few seconds later. It's a joke, of course, but they cling on to the topic, serving as their current entertainment during an otherwise uninspiring time.

Will grins wide, “Like the channel ending bit?” He remembers from the last time they had a serious conversation about the ships in case anyone was genuinely uncomfortable with it, they ultimately decided that it’s pretty tame right now and saying something wouldn’t cost too much if it ever goes too far, the discussion ended with them joking about what would happen to the channel if two of them got married instead of one.

Coy’s eyes widen as he smiles, “Yeah, imagine the engagements…no pun intended,” He hears Hanbon hitting Will and his quiet “Ow” which seemed to be more audible than her actual laugh that famously accompanies her violence, They look at Anthony when they hear his chair turn to face them.

“I don’t wanna marry someone for the bit,” He mocks Coy, throwing quotation marks with his fingers in the air. He obviously knows that the two are joking but he’s playing his role as the solemn member of the group, this is basically his version of playing into the joke, “I’d only marry someone because of love or... some sentimental reason at least, not some superficial thing like a bit.”

The other three physically cringe at the cliché line, Coy and Hanbon look at each other with the most disgusted look on their faces, “What? Even if it gives you money?” Will snarks sarcastically, still grinning like a kid that makes Anthony feel like this conversation has now transitioned into a scheme to tease him instead.

He furrows his eyebrows at that statement, “Well it’s not like the engagements equate to a million dollars,” he lets out a breathy laugh, “I don’t even think the engagements on those edits equate to at least a hundred thousand.” Coy gives a snarky smile to that.

That’s when Hanbon decided to chime in, she was going to prove Anthony wrong. She was gonna show him that he would marry someone for such a superficial reason like a million dollars, “Would you fake marry me for a million dollars then?” She expects him to say yes, of course, he’s Mr. IWishIHadAMillionDollars afterall!

He blinks, breathes in, swallows and then finally opens his mouth, “I’d do it without the money” The room goes suspiciously quiet and Hanbon wants to laugh, cause he’s joking! He said he wouldn’t marry unless it’s for love or something sentimental, surely he’s talking about the time they joked about the platonic marriage promises people make with their best friends.

“Like if we’re still single by the time we’re 40, right?” Anthony doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry and Hanbon is confused as to why Will and Coy both look and sound like they’re about to pass out from laughing. Anthony leaves the room to go to the bathroom and the two only laugh harder. Her inner intuition decides that maybe there’s a joke she just doesn’t quite get yet.

They don’t end up playing with the cards, of course, but Will and Coy sure do spend the night side-eyeing each other every time Anthony stares at Hanbon for a second too long.

Notes:

Originally meant to be a oneshot but I decided to make it multiple chapters instead. My personal contribution to the Hanpo fics drought <3
