Summary:

Reader shares her apartment with John Carter and they quickly become close.

Notes:

This takes place in early season 5, so beard Carter :)
I might make this a oneshot series so I'm open more requests or prompts 🫶

Work Text:

When you first moved to Chicago a few months ago, you quickly realized that getting a roommate would be more than profitable. Your apartment had just enough space for two people to live in. Two bedrooms, one bathroom and an open kitchen that directly oversees your cozy living room. You decided that the local newspaper would be your best shot at getting a roommate.

So 4 months later you have come to share your place with John Carter. You were hesitant at first. A young woman sharing an apartment with a strange man doesn't always end well after all, but a quick look at your finances made it worth the risk. You didn't see much of him in the beginning. He spends more time at the hospital than at home and as someone who values her solitude, you absolutely didn't mind his workaholic tendencies.

Unfortunately he does have days off from work. Today is one of them. He's hunched over the kitchen table with his nose burried in some kind of textbook, researching all kinds of medical stuff you have no idea about. You're not a doctor. You're a real estate agent who took the first job at an agency she could get which turned out to be one of the worst ones in the city. Living with John has only shown you how unsuccessful you are. You're leaning against the kitchen counter, making coffee. One of the few pleasures in your life.

To be fair, living with John isn't half bad. He does a surprising amount of Chores for an overworked man in his 20s. He does the dishes, does his own laundry, which is the bare minimum in your opinion but there are also much worse people to live with. He even gets you your favorite salted caramel chocolate when he goes grocery shopping. What you don't realize is that this is his way of subtly flirting with you without embarrassing himself. Sure he's a handsome guy but he tends to get nervous around confident women. He doesn't want to mess everything up right away.

You're sitting on the couch, reading a book when John walks in with a grocery bag in hand.

"I got something for you", he says with a charmingly dopey grin on his face.

"My chocolate?", you can't help but get excited. It's exactly what you needed today after an overly annoying day at work.

"Your chocolate", he confirms and hands it to you before plopping down on the couch next to you.

"You're an angel you know that?", your words instantly take effect, making his face heat up and you could definitely see the cute blush on his cheeks if you weren't too focused on your well deserved sweet treat.

He clears his throat, "I am?".

"Mhmm definitely", you respond with a small smile on your face. Even if you're slightly annoyed by having to share your apartment sometimes, you can't deny how much you like John as a person.

"Do I get a reward for being nice?", surprising even himself as he hears the words come out of his mouth. He's tired of pretending to be just your polite roommate, especially because you're oblivious to his "romantic" acts of service.

You turn your head to look at him properly. Your eyes meeting his. "A reward?", your voice making your surprise known. He simply nods, already half expecting you to laugh in his face but to his surprise you do no such thing. Instead you lean in and press a lingering kiss to his cheek. Before you can lean back against the couch again, he gently grabs your face by putting one of his big hands on your cheek to kiss you properly. Your eyes flutter shut, kissing him back gently. Deep down you've been waiting for this moment since he moved in. You can feel his beard tickling your skin, but it only makes you want to pull away even less. Unfortunately you have to pause your romantic make-out session for air. He leans back against the couch but his eyes never leave your face. One of his arms comes up around your shoulders to pull you against him.

You two spent the rest of the evening simply enjoying being close to each other. In more ways than one. By the end of the day, you fall asleep against his chest, skin on skin. John's hand runs through your hair with an almost hypnotic pace that makes you fall asleep within minutes.
