Chapter 1: Twisted Fate

Genosha

I missed. The most important shot of my life and I missed. The motorcycle exploded in the distance and Rogue continued to fly after MasterMold, who was shooting beam after beam at her, all of which she dodged. She punched right through the monster-sentinel’s torso and came out the other end. She continued to do so until—

I caught movement out of the corner of my eye, “ROGUE!” but too late. A tentacle managed to plunge into her side. She turned her head, but I couldn’t tell if she was looking at me or not because of the distance. Before I could do anything, MasterMold exploded and everything went black.

I fought for consciousness as I heard someone calling my name.

“Remy!” I opened my eyes and found Kurt hovering over me. It takes a minute for my brain to catch up on what’s happening.

“Anna Marie!” I bolt upright and turn pleading eyes to Kurt. He just lowers his head. When Jean-Luc’s wife had died and I asked, I’d gotten the same look.

                  “No,” I breathed, “No!”

I scrambled up, frantically looking for Rogue. Then I found her, in a crater made from the explosion. She wasn’t moving. I ran and slid, stumbling to my knees at her side.

“Rogue?” she didn’t move. I picked her up from the torso and cradled her in my lap.

“Anna Marie…please…don’t…” I’ve started crying now, forehead pressed to hers. “Don’t leave me, Chère…”

6 months later

The early morning sun shone into my room before I was ready for it. I squinted as my eyes adjusted and turned on my side to the nightstand to check the time. 6 am. Time to get through another day the only way I knew how. I changed into my normal outfit (stealth pants and top, pink bulletproof vest, and brown trench coat) and make my way to the Danger Room.

“You know the drill. Wear me out.”

‘Loading Gambit’s training module,’ a robotic voice replied.

The metal encasing of the Danger Room shifted into a battle arena similar to what you might have seen in Ancient Greece. I spent the next two hours fighting Magneto, Sinister, Sabretooth, Nanny the Evil Robot, Juggernaut, Sentinels, Apocalypse, MasterMold, and finally…myself. Couldn’t get better training than defeating yourself.

“Ok…” I pant, “You know what’s next.” I stare at the fallen clone of myself.

“You’re workin’ yourself too hard, Sugah,” my breath, however limited, caught at the sound of that southern accent. For the millionth time since her death, I turn around and my breathing halts. She’s in her normal bodysuit, jacket, and gloves.

“All part of the trainin’, Chère…” I breathe out.

“The trainin’ or the distraction?” She smiles knowingly and walks towards me.

                  “Both.”

“Why?” she grabs my hands in hers.

“I…I can’t forgive myself for what happened to you. I should’ve—could’ve—done something.” I lowered my head in shame.

She paused, then spat, “But you didn’t. And now I’m dead and it’s all. Your. Fault.”

Now this wasn’t normal, “Rogue? Are—AHHH!” I stumble back, out of her grip. For the woman in front of me looked similar to Rogue but different. Dark gray skin, shocking white hair tied up in a ponytail, and bright glowing red eyes.

“What’s wrong Remy? Thought outside appearance didn’t matter to you. What was it that you said? Oh, yes, some things be deeper than skin. Really sweet line, Sugah.”

“Who—what are you?” I rasp out.

“Death,” she says with a sinister smile.

And with that, the session ended and she vanished. I panted and then looked up at the control room. I felt my eyes widen at who stood in front of the glass windows overlooking the room. Apocalypse smiled down at me and then vanished.
