Fracture Point

Summary:

"Every agent has a breaking limit, and hers was never in combat-it was in the moment someone refused to leave her untouched"

Lucca Santori was trained to be precise, untouchable, and emotionally locked down after a life shaped by loss, secrecy, and survival, but everything she had built around herself begins to shift the moment she meets Skye-a relentless hacker who refuses to respect distance, reads between her silences, and keeps showing up where she isn't supposed to belong. What starts as friction between control and chaos slowly turns into something deeper, as Skye's persistence chips away at Lucca's carefully constructed walls until she's forced to confront the truth she's avoided for years: she can handle war, missions, and death without breaking, but nothing in her training prepared her for someone who makes her want to stay instead of disappear.

[SHIELD HQ — Director Fury's Office]

The corridor outside Director Fury's office carried the kind of silence that always felt intentional, as if the building itself understood when something important was about to happen and chose not to interrupt it.

Lucca moved through it with steady control, boots landing softly against polished flooring, shoulders squared in a posture that never fully relaxed even when she wasn't in the field. She had already completed her debrief, already submitted her report, already expected the day to dissolve into routine clearance work or training rotations. Being summoned again did not alarm her, but it did narrow her focus.

She stopped at the door, exhaled once through her nose, and stepped inside without hesitation.

Fury sat behind his desk, still as stone, the dim lighting of the office cutting across the edges of his coat and the reflective surface of scattered files. He did not look surprised to see her, which alone was enough to shift the temperature of the room.

Lucca's gaze held on him briefly, "You asked for me specifically, sir. I'm here"

Fury leaned back slightly, studying her for a moment, "Take a seat, Santori"

She didn't move immediately, eyes narrowing just slightly as if measuring intent before compliance. Then she crossed the room and sat across from him, posture straight, hands resting lightly but ready, "What's this about?"

Fury's expression didn't change much, though something in his attention sharpened, "You've been operating at a level most agents never reach. Six years in, and you've already built a record that stands out even here. And you're still only twenty-one"

Lucca tilted her head a fraction, as if she could read the purpose behind the praise before it fully formed, "Skip the compliments. If there's a new assignment, just say it"

Fury's hand slid a folder across the desk toward her, "You're being moved onto a mobile operations unit"

Her fingers closed around the file without breaking eye contact. She opened it only slightly, scanning the first page, "I usually work alone. That hasn't changed"

"I'm aware" Fury replied, watching her reaction closely, "But this will serve you better than another solo rotation"

Lucca didn't look convinced, though she also didn't argue. Her attention stayed on the file, "And who exactly is leading this unit?"

Before Fury could answer, another voice cut in from the side of the room, "That would be me" Coulson said as he stepped out from the shadows near the far wall

Lucca's eyes shifted instantly, recognition hitting fast enough to tighten her expression. Coulson offered a small, familiar smile, "It's good to see you again, Lucca"

Her posture stiffened almost imperceptibly, disbelief overriding composure for just a moment, "You're supposed to be dead. I read the reports myself. I was there for parts of that operation"

Coulson's expression softened slightly as he gave a small nod, "Technically, I was. Briefly. But I came back"

Her gaze flicked between him and Fury, "You didn't think that was something I needed to know?"

Fury answered without hesitation, "It was classified"

Lucca's jaw tightened, "I hold Level Eight clearance"

Fury's reply came quieter, more final, "Not for everything"

Before the tension could settle further, Coulson stepped forward and placed another file on the edge of the desk, sliding it toward her with controlled ease, "Tell me, have you ever heard of the Rising Tide?"

Lucca flipped the file open and scanned it quickly, eyes moving with practiced speed across the contents, "A hacker collective focused on exposing information before anyone decides the public should see it"

Coulson nodded once, "That's the one. And your first assignment with this team is to stop them before they trigger something we can't control"

Lucca closed the file with a quiet tap, gaze steady, "When do we deploy?"

Coulson checked his watch briefly, then looked back at her, "One hour"

She stood immediately, decision already made, "Understood"

She turned and walked out of the office without another word, presence vanishing as quickly as it had arrived, leaving only the faint sound of her boots fading down the hall.

For a moment, the room remained still.

Coulson finally broke the silence, eyes still on the doorway she had disappeared through, "Are you certain she's the right choice for this kind of team dynamic?"

Fury didn't look up from the desk, "She's been operating alone for too long. That's on me as much as anyone. She's still young enough to learn something different. And if anyone can keep her from shutting the world out completely, it's you and this team"

Coulson studied him for a beat longer, then nodded slowly, "Then I'll do my best to make it work"

[Bus]

The mobile unit sat on the tarmac like a sleeping machine waiting to wake, its engines idling with a low, constant thrum that vibrated through the metal ramp. Heat shimmered faintly across the landing zone, blurring the edges of everything outside the cargo bay as agents moved with purpose between crates, equipment, and clipped conversations that always sounded half-finished.

The roar of an engine cut through it all.

A motorcycle surged up the ramp and into the intake cargo hold with controlled precision, tires gripping steel as Lucca guided it in without hesitation. The sound echoed sharply inside the hollow space, drawing a few passing glances from nearby agents, though none of them lasted long enough to matter. She didn't slow, didn't acknowledge them, and didn't offer explanation. The machine rolled to a clean stop in the center of the bay like it belonged there.

Lucca killed the engine and swung off in one smooth motion, boots hitting the floor with practiced balance. She removed her helmet and set it carefully on the handlebars, dark curls loosening slightly as she exhaled and scanned the space around her. Her expression stayed neutral, but her eyes were already cataloging exits, movement, personnel.

She didn't love the assignment. She never had been a team person. But she followed orders, and that was enough for now.

Her attention drifted toward the lab section of the Bus, where glass and metal framed a compact workspace. Two scientists stood inside, along with a man she immediately recognized—Ward. That alone was enough to tighten her patience. Not unexpected, but still unwelcome.

Lucca stepped off the bike and walked forward.

The lab doors slid open as she reached them, and Ward was already mid-sentence, "Coulson said I'd need my comm receiver encoded"

Lucca stepped inside without slowing, eyes flicking between the equipment and the people already gathered, "Yeah, I just got told mine needs the same treatment. Figured I'd see how you're managing it"

Everyone turned toward her at once.

Simmons brightened immediately, as if the tension in the room had simply become background noise, "Oh, Agent Santori" She smiled, gesturing toward Fitz beside her, "He's Fitz, I'm Simmons"

Fitz barely looked up, already focused on the devices in Ward and Lucca's hands as he took both comm units without ceremony.

Ward started to warn him, "Careful it's—" Fitz brought the devices down with sudden force, cracking them apart cleanly, "—brand new"

Simmons didn't even flinch, already stepping into explanation mode as if this was routine, "He'll repurpose the IDIS chip"

Fitz worked quickly, fingers already sorting components, "No more external receiver. Now it goes right in the inner ear"

Simmons stepped forward holding two cotton swabs, entirely calm about the invasive nature of what she was about to do, "Open wide"

Lucca and Ward both paused, but only briefly. Lucca's expression tightened in silent skepticism as she complied just enough to make the process efficient. Simmons swabbed carefully, labeling and storing samples with practiced speed, "Embedded sensoryneural silicone matched to your DNA. It's very posh"

Once finished, she sealed the containers and turned toward them with unmistakable enthusiasm, "So, are you two excited to be coming on our journey into mystery?"

Lucca leaned slightly back on her heels, arms folding loosely, "This is absolutely everything I dreamed about when I signed up"

Ward exhaled through his nose, "Yeah, it's like Christmas"

Before anyone could respond, the sound of tires screaming against the hangar floor cut through the Bus with violent clarity. Heads turned instinctively toward the cargo bay doors.

A cherry-red convertible roared up the ramp and into the aircraft like it had no respect for physics or personal space, sliding into position with unsettling precision before coming to a perfect stop in the center of the hold.

Fitz watched it like it was a religious artifact, "One of Coulson's old SHIELD collectibles. Flame thrower, the world's first GPS...he's mad for this crap"

The driver's door opened and Coulson stepped out with calm ease, adjusting his sunglasses as though nothing about what just happened was unusual. A nearby tech glanced at the car too long and immediately regretted it.

"Don't touch Lola" Coulson said

Fitz smiled faintly, "And he calls it a girl's name"

Coulson crossed the bay toward Ward and Lucca, motioning for them to follow, "Ward, Lucca, with me"

They followed him up into the upper level of the Bus, the hum of the engines deepening as they moved away from the cargo bay.

Coulson spoke casually as they walked, "Lola's not just a collectible, you know? People tend to confuse the words new and improved"

They entered the main living area, lights shifting slightly warmer as the space opened up around them.

"These mobile units were in heavy rotation back in the nineties before the Helicarrier took over" He glanced back at them with faint amusement, "Hey, did you hear the one about the guy who's afraid of flying?"

Ward answered immediately, posture straightening with practiced discipline, "I've done a night jump into a drop zone under heavy fire, sir. I can handle it"

Lucca barely looked up from the space ahead, "That's supposed to be a joke"

Coulson opened his mouth as if to continue, then stopped himself, shaking his head slightly, "The first part of—" He paused, then added, "...I'm not gonna tell it now"

A new voice cut through the space before the moment could settle. May stepped in with quiet efficiency, file already in hand, "If you plan to unpack, make it quick. Wheels up in five"

She handed Coulson the file without ceremony, "We may have a hit on one of the Rising Tide's routing points"

Coulson took it, scanning quickly, "Good. We need to do some catching up"

May turned and left without another word, already done with the conversation. Ward watched her go for a beat longer than necessary, "Is that who I think it is?"

Coulson didn't look up from the file, "She's just the pilot"

Ward scoffed slightly, "Melinda May is just the pilot. Come on, sir. What game are you really playing?"

Coulson closed the file and stepped past them, "Better stow your gear"

Then he walked away.

Lucca didn't hesitate. She turned and headed straight for the bunk area, moving with efficient speed. She didn't waste time inspecting, didn't linger, didn't engage. Her bag was unpacked in clean, minimal motions, everything placed exactly where it needed to be.

If this was her new assignment, she would adapt. That was what she always did.

Hours later, the Bus touched down again, this time in a quieter stretch of urban space. The mission had already tightened into motion. Ward, Coulson, and Lucca moved through the alley with controlled urgency, boots echoing softly against damp concrete.

A van sat parked ahead like it had been waiting too long to matter.

Lucca stopped briefly at the sight of it, unimpressed but alert, scanning for anything out of place. Nothing about the situation inspired confidence.

Coulson opened the van door.

Inside sat a woman. She turned her head, "Hey, what's up?"

Ward moved instantly, pulling a bag over her head before she could react further. The action was clean, practiced, and final.

Lucca watched it happen without comment, already turning away as if the situation had resolved itself into something she didn't need to emotionally participate in.

They moved her back toward the Bus.

And just like that, the assignment kept getting more complicated.

[Bus — Interrogation Room]

The interrogation room felt smaller than it actually was, its muted lighting reflecting off reinforced metal walls that had witnessed countless conversations no one outside SHIELD would ever hear. The engines hummed steadily beneath the floor, creating a constant vibration that settled into the background until it became impossible to notice.

Lucca remained near the back of the room, one shoulder resting against the wall with her arms loosely folded across her chest. She watched without speaking, dark eyes studying every movement as carefully as every word. Years of interrogation training had taught her that silence usually revealed more than questions ever could.

Ward reached forward and pulled the black bag off the captive's head before guiding her firmly into the chair bolted to the floor.

She frowned as she blinked against the light, "You guys are making a big mistake"

Ward barely reacted, "You don't look that big"

Coulson settled calmly into the chair opposite her, his posture relaxed enough to seem harmless despite the circumstances, "Apologies for the less than warm welcome. Agent Ward has had a...complicated history with your friends over at Rising Tide"

She lifted an eyebrow, "I don't know what you—"

Ward interrupted before she could finish, "There are two ways we can do this"

A crooked grin spread across her face, "Oh. Is one of them the easy way?"

Lucca quietly noted the confidence in the woman's posture. Even restrained inside a military aircraft surrounded by armed agents, she projected amusement instead of fear.

Ward answered without hesitation, "No"

The confidence faltered for only a heartbeat, "Oh"

Coulson leaned forward slightly, "What's your name?"

Instead of answering, her attention drifted across the room until it landed on Lucca. She smiled faintly, "I'll answer that after the silent one over there quits glaring holes through me and tells me who she is"

Coulson looked toward Lucca without speaking.

The message was clear.

Lucca pushed herself away from the wall and crossed the room with measured steps before stopping beside the table, "Agent Santori"

The girl tilted her head, studying her with open curiosity, "That's nice, but do you actually have a first name or does SHIELD keep that under lock and key too?"

Lucca leaned down until they were nearly eye level, "The people who usually learn more than that rarely stay alive long enough to appreciate it. Let's save us both the trouble and start with your name instead"

For the first time since arriving, the girl's smile faded just enough for uncertainty to show. She swallowed once, "Skye. My name is Skye"

Before Lucca could continue, Ward stepped forward, "What's your real name?"

Coulson lifted a hand slightly, "That can wait. It's another name we need. A certain hero"

Skye shifted in her chair, "What makes you think I know anything?"

Lucca stepped back without another word, returning to her place against the wall. Her expression remained unreadable, though her attention never left Skye.

Coulson folded his hands together, "Well, you made a mistake. The phone you used to film the Hooded Hero had the same cryptographic signature as a few Rising Tide data breaches. Not exactly subtle"

Skye shrugged, "Wow. Yeah, was that a mistake? Or am I now in the belly of your flying spy base? What is this, a plane? I got in. And by now, you've figured out you can't crack the encryption on my gear, so...you've got nothing"

Coulson's voice remained patient, "We've got a strong coincidence. You being on the scene before it went up in flames. Wanna tell me what my team's gonna find there?" Skye answered with silence, "How do you know the hooded hero was in the building?"

Ward narrowed his eyes, "Did you blow it up to draw him out?"

Skye met his stare without blinking, "Did you?"

Coulson shook his head slightly, "That's not our style"

A short laugh escaped Skye, "I was just kidnapped by your style" She leaned back in the chair, "SHIELD covered up New Mexico. Project Pegasus. Of course they're covering up Centipede"

Across the room, Lucca straightened almost imperceptibly. She caught Ward mouthing the unfamiliar word under his breath.

Skye noticed immediately. A knowing smirk returned, "Holy crap. You don't know, do you. You've got all the tech in the world and I outplayed you with a laptop I won in a bet"

Coulson's expression grew more serious, "You need to think about your friend. We're not the only ones interested in people with powers. We'd like to contain him, yes. The next guy will want to exploit him. And the one after that? They'll wanna carve him open"

Ward leaned forward, his attention fully captured now, "What is Centipede?"

Skye pushed away from the table and began pacing, "It was chatter at first. Online rumors. Then nothing. I was tracking a MAC address that led me to that building"

Ward crossed his arms, "What are you after?"

Skye shrugged, "The truth. What are you after?"

Ward scoffed, "World Peace. You pseudo-anarchist hacker types like to kick the hornet's nest, then disappear before the fallout. People keep secrets for a reason, Skye"

Skye rolled her eyes, "Well, just because you're stiff and condescending doesn't mean you're not also a faceless government meathead"

Ward leaned forward, "Just give us your guy's name"

Skye threw up her hands, "He's not my guy!"

Coulson remained calm, "You understand he's in danger"

Skye stopped pacing, "Then let me talk to him. Let me help him. Me. Not..." She pointed directly at Ward, "...Robo-Cop over there."

Then her attention shifted, dark eyes settled on Lucca, "Or the younger, more scary female James Bond"

Lucca tilted her head slightly, one eyebrow raising, "That's a new one"

The corner of Skye's mouth twitched upward, "Trust me, it was meant as a compliment"

Ward looked thoroughly unimpressed, "You wanna be alone with him, of course. She's a groupie. Hacking SHILED, tracking powered people—she's basically one of those sweaty cosplay girls drooping outside Stark Tower"

Skye pointed at him immediately, "What?! I—okay it was one time"

A brief silence followed before Coulson pushed himself upright, "Ward, Santori"

Lucca pushed off the wall and followed without hesitation. Ward moved after them, still looking annoyed as the interrogation room door slid shut behind the trio.

The hallway outside was noticeably quieter.

Coulson looked toward Ward, "Is it the girl? She getting under your skin?"

Ward exhaled, "Sir..."

Coulson continued, "Or is it the assignment? You that eager to be done with this that you'd blow the interrogation?"

Ward frowned, "Give me a minute with her. You'll have your answers"

Coulson shook his head, "She's an asset"

Ward blinked, "She is such an—wait, asset?"

Coulson nodded, "We don't know anything about her. You know how rare that is? We need what she knows?"

Lucca remained silent while Coulson unlocked a hidden compartment built into the wall. Her attention followed the motion automatically. Inside sat a sleek black case.

Coulson removed it and opened it.

A syringe rested inside.

Back in the interrogation room, Skye's confidence visibly faltered for the first time.

"This is QNB-T-16" Coulson lifted the syringe, "It's the top shelf martini of sodium Pentothal derivatives"

Skye stiffened as Coulson added, "It's brand new. Extremely potent truth drug. Don't worry, effects only last about an hour"

Ward stepped closer, "And you'll get a little nap, and we'll have all the answers to our—"

Before he could finish, Coulson jabbed the needle directly into his neck. Ward jumped backward, "HEY! What the hell?!"

Coulson remained perfectly calm, "I'm sorry, did that hurt?"

Ward rubbed his neck, "No. But you've lost your mind. You shouldn't do that to a team member. And yes, it did hurt a little. But I try not to show pain in front of beautiful women. Makes me seem more masculine"

Skye stared.

Lucca stared.

Even Coulson looked mildly entertained.

A few seconds later Ward dropped heavily into the chair opposite Skye, "My god, this stuff works fast"

Coulson looked toward Skye, "Don't trust us? Ask him whatever you want"

Without another word, he turned and headed for the door. Lucca followed, though not before glancing back.

Skye sat frozen in her chair, surprise written across her face as she looked between the syringe and the suddenly over-honest agent slumped across from her.

For the first time since arriving aboard the Bus, she looked completely caught off guard.

Ward groaned again, "This is definitely not protocol!"

Lucca stepped into the hallway and pulled the door shut behind her, sealing the two of them inside.

[Hour Later — Command Center]

An hour later, the Bus felt less like a mobile command center and more like a held breath.

The command center lights glowed softly over the holocom as Coulson, Lucca, and Skye stood shoulder-to-shoulder, watching the live feed feed from the interrogation room. Onscreen, Ward sat slumped in his chair, completely unconscious, the aftermath of Coulson's unorthodox method still playing out in silence. The camera feed flickered slightly with aircraft turbulence, but the image held steady enough to make the scene feel uncomfortably real.

Coulson kept his attention on Skye, "Did Agent Ward give you anything?"

Skye shifted her weight slightly, glancing at the screen as if replaying the conversation in her head, "He told me he's been to Paris, but he's never really seen it and that he wishes you had stayed in Tahiti"

A faint pause followed, the kind that carried more meaning than the words themselves.

Coulson's expression didn't change, "It's a magical place"

Skye let out a small smile despite herself, "Ward doesn't like your style. I kind of think I do"

Lucca remained still at the edge of the table, eyes tracking the data feeds more than the conversation. Her posture stayed controlled, but her attention sharpened whenever Skye spoke, as if measuring every variable she introduced into the room.

"What about this?" Coulson hit play on the screen, "...remains in critical condition. Employees could not identify the attacker, but security footage confirms that this man assaulted the factory foreman before damaging thousands of dollars worth of company property..."

Skye's expression tightened immediately, "This is wrong. This is not the guy I met. He was... e just needs a break"

Coulson studied her carefully before responding, "Then how about we give him one. What have you got?"

Skye stepped forward and placed a driver's license down onto the table, followed by a data transfer from her device. The holocom processed it instantly, light shifting as new information began to populate the system.

Before anyone could fully react, the rest of the team entered the command center—Fitz first, followed by Simmons and May, each moving with their own rhythm of urgency and focus.

"Mike Peterson. Factory worker, married, one kid. Gets injured, laid off, wife jumps ship. Good guy, bad breaks. Best guess is somebody tells him they can make him strong again. Make him super" Coulson detailed

May's gaze immediately locked onto the data, "Who has the tech to do that?"

Coulson turned slightly toward Fitz, "Fitz, what do we have from the security footage? Before the blast?"

Fitz leaned in, fingers flying across the interface as the feed expanded on the holocom. The footage was grainy, distorted, almost unwilling to be analyzed. Two figures barely registered in the chaos of the frame.

May narrowed her eyes, "What are we seeing?"

Fitz frowned at the display, "Well, that man is angry at the other man"

Simmons leaned closer, adjusting her angle on the projection, "The data is very corrupt"

Fitz sighed, "Yeah, like Cold War Russia corrupt. I can't sync the time code without—"

Skye cut in, stepping slightly closer to the table, "What if you had the audio?" All eyes shifted toward her at once, "I was running surveillance on the lab. I had my shotgun mic pointed at the window before the blast. The digital file's in my van. There's too much background noise for me, but you could probably..."

Simmons turned instantly toward Fitz, already thinking ahead, "You can clean that up, can't you? Find a sync point and use cross-file validation to find—"

Fitz shook his head, already mid-thought, "But I can't scrub for expression patterns when the VITC is all—"

Their technical back-and-forth blurred together for a moment, the kind of rapid-fire analysis that usually filled labs rather than command centers. Then both of them stopped at once and looked back at Skye.

Fitz nodded, "That audio would be great"

Simmons followed immediately, "We will take that audio, please"

Coulson stepped forward slightly, "Your van's here. But you were right. We couldn't decrypt the files"

Skye exhaled, already thinking ahead, "The encryption's coupled to the GPS. Get my van back to that alley, and then I'm in business"

Coulson nodded once, "Agents Santori and May will escort you. And on your way out, wake up Ward"

Lucca gave a small nod, already turning toward the exit without hesitation. Her expression stayed neutral, but her focus had already shifted to movement, positioning, and timing—the mission resuming the moment orders were given.

Without a word, she followed the others out of the command center, the holocom glow fading behind them as the Bus continued forward into whatever came next.

[Alleyway]

The alleyway sat in a narrow strip of daylight between aging brick buildings, the kind of place where sound seemed to get swallowed before it could fully form. Skye remained tucked inside her van, hunched over a laptop balanced on her knees, fingers moving quickly as lines of data flickered across the screen. The glow lit her face in shifting blues and whites while she kept one hand pressed to a phone at her ear.

On the other end of the line, Fitz's voice came through slightly distorted but steady.

Skye spoke into the phone without looking away from her monitor, "Audio file should be coming through. Not compressed, so...it might take a sec"

Fitz replied after a brief pause, voice crackling faintly through the connection, "Copy that"

A second later, Skye ended the call, the van falling into a quieter rhythm of humming electronics and distant city noise. She leaned back slightly, rolling her shoulders before turning toward the open side door where May and Lucca stood outside, "That should do it.

Lucca barely shifted her gaze from the alley's far end, still scanning angles, rooftops, and blind corners with practiced precision, "We move now"

May gave a short, almost imperceptible nod, already adjusting her stance as if aligning herself with the next phase of the mission.

For a moment, everything held in uneasy balance. Then a heavy impact cracked through the air behind May.

It came from nowhere and everywhere at once—too fast to fully register before it landed. A figure surged out of the shadows, grabbing May by the shoulder and driving her hard into the brick wall of the adjacent building. The sound of it echoed down the alley, sharp and brutal.

May hit the ground a second later, rolling with the force but clearly stunned, one hand already moving instinctively toward her temple.

Lucca reacted instantly.

Her body pivoted, weight shifting low as she stepped into the attack, narrowly slipping past the first punch that cut through the space where her head had been. The strike whipped past her cheek, close enough to disturb the air.

She countered with a fast elbow aimed toward the attacker's ribs, but the man—Peterson—absorbed it without hesitation, adjusting his stance like he had already calculated every move she might make. His grip caught her arm mid-motion, twisting with brutal efficiency.

Lucca tried to break free, driving a knee upward, but he redirected her momentum, using her own movement against her. The impact that followed came fast and disorienting—a sharp strike that snapped her balance away and sent her crashing hard onto the pavement.

Concrete rushed up to meet her.

Her vision blurred at the edges as she tried to push herself back up, but another heavy blow landed before she could fully recover, knocking the air from her lungs and forcing her back down.

The last thing she registered clearly was Skye's voice, sharp and panicked, cutting through the chaos, "Santori!"

It echoed strangely, as if pulled underwater, before everything went dark.

Time passed in uneven fragments.

Sound returned first—distant, muffled, layered with a dull ringing that refused to fade. Then sensation followed: the cold bite of the ground beneath her and the dull ache blooming across her skull.

Lucca exhaled slowly, forcing her eyes open.

The alley looked different now—quieter, emptier in a way that felt wrong. Her fingers flexed once before she pushed herself up slightly, wincing as her body protested the movement.

May was nearby, already stirring, one hand pressed to the side of her head as she let out a low, controlled groan.

Lucca pushed herself fully upright, "Peterson took Skye. We need to move fast"

May blinked through the pain, already reaching for her comms as she got her bearings. Her expression tightened, focus returning in sharp increments, "Coulson, he took Skye"

A brief pause followed, static filling the line before Coulson responded, "Are you and Santori all right?"

Lucca rose fully, jaw set, shoulders tense as adrenaline started to replace the haze in her head, "I'll feel better when Peterson's down"

May glanced at her, assessing, then shifted her weight as she stabilized herself, "We'll discuss this later. Right now, we need to find them"

[Union Station]

Union Station sat beneath the city's steady daytime rush, its vast interior humming with distant footsteps, rolling luggage, and the fractured echo of announcements that never quite carried cleanly across the stone and steel.

Lucca moved with May through the lower concourse entry, both of them blending into the flow for only a moment before their posture shifted—alert, calculated, already tracking the faint beacon Skye had managed to slip through the chaos.

The signal pulsed inconsistently on Lucca's SHIELD interface, sharp and erratic, like it was being dragged through layers of concrete and interference. Centipede instability made everything worse; the readings weren't just messy, they were volatile, suggesting Peterson's condition was approaching collapse rather than containment.

May's gaze cut through the crowd without hesitation, scanning angles and exits, while Lucca adjusted her position slightly ahead, reading movement patterns the way she read a battlefield. Neither of them spoke much; they didn't need to. The urgency sat between them, structured and immediate.

Coulson's voice crackled through the comms, "May, Santori, take the north entrance"

They moved instantly, cutting through a side corridor that opened into the upper edge of the concourse where the architecture widened and visibility sharpened. That was where they saw them—two uniformed figures positioned like police, too still, too deliberate.

Lucca didn't slow. Her instincts snapped into place first, body already shifting before the threat fully registered. May mirrored the motion beside her, and together they closed distance fast enough that the disguised gunmen barely had time to react.

The takedown was clean and brutal in its efficiency. One was driven hard into the wall, breath knocked out in a sharp collapse, while the other was disarmed mid-turn and dropped hard onto the floor with a controlled strike that left no room for recovery. The weapons clattered out of reach before either could fully understand what had happened.

Silence returned in a thin, tense layer as Lucca straightened, scanning for secondary threats. That was when she saw Skye—standing a few steps away, wide-eyed, frozen between shock and recognition.

Lucca didn't linger on her expression. The situation didn't allow it.

A deep, distorted boom rolled up from below, vibrating through the structure like something massive had shifted inside the bones of the station itself. The sound wasn't just loud—it was wrong, layered with pressure and instability.

Skye startled, already moving before she was fully told to, scrambling toward the stairwell that dropped into the lower concourse. May and Lucca followed immediately, boots striking concrete in rapid succession as they descended into the deeper levels.

The space below opened wide, revealing the central concourse where chaos had condensed into a single focal point.

Peterson stood across from Coulson.

The air around him felt unstable, charged with something barely contained, his movements too fluid, too strong, as if the structure of his own body no longer followed normal limits, "There's people being pushed down, being robbed. One of them tries to stand up, you got to make an example of him"

Coulson didn't move back, his stance grounded even as the threat escalated in real time, "You bring the building down on us, will that help them?"

Peterson roared in frustration and slammed a nearby newsstand apart with a single violent motion, sending metal and glass scattering across the floor.

From the edge of Lucca's vision, Skye shifted forward instinctively.

Lucca reacted instantly, stepping into Skye's path and planting herself firmly in front of her, posture locking into protective control, "Stay behind me"

Peterson's head snapped toward the sound, "That's a lie! All you do is lie!"

He took a step forward, "You said if we worked hard, if we did it right, we'd have a place. You said it was enough to be a man. But there's better than man, there's gods. And the rest of us, what are we? They're giants. We're what they step on"

Coulson stepped closer, "I know. I've seen giants up close and that privilege cost me nearly everything. But the good ones, the real deal? They're not heroes because of what they have that we don't. It's what they do with it. You're right, Mike. It matters who you are"

Peterson's voice dropped, almost reflective beneath the instability, "I could, you know? Be a hero"

Coulson answered without hesitation, meeting him head-on, "I'm counting on it"

The gunshot cracked through the space, sharp and final, echoing hard enough to shake dust loose from overhead fixtures.

Peterson dropped immediately, collapsing to the ground in a sudden, heavy fall that should have ended in blood—but none appeared. The absence of it made the moment feel even more unnatural, like reality had been interrupted rather than concluded.

Simmons and Fitz rushed in at once, moving with practiced urgency as they checked his condition, voices overlapping in technical confirmation and rapid assessment as they worked to stabilize him.

Lucca's attention shifted sharply at the sound of movement above. On a distant ledge, Ward stood with his rifle still raised, posture rigid, face unreadable from this distance.

She didn't react outwardly. Not yet.

Her eyes moved back to Skye instead, who looked shaken in a way that didn't match the earlier bravado. For a fraction of a second, something passed between them—uncertainty, pressure, the weight of everything happening too fast.

Lucca didn't stay long enough to interpret it further. She turned away and walked, steps measured and controlled, leaving the moment behind her as the chaos of the concourse continued unfolding without pause.

[Back on the Bus]

The lounge area carried a different kind of quiet than the rest of the aircraft—less like silence and more like people deliberately existing around each other without fully committing to it. Screens hummed softly, metal fixtures clinked with the motion of flight systems, and the faint vibration of engines rolled through the floor like a constant reminder that nowhere aboard this place ever truly stood still.

Lucca sat at one of the tables with takeout untouched for longer than she would have admitted to anyone. She wasn't there because she wanted company—she was there because isolation in a bunk invited questions, and questions invited attention she didn't have the patience for. So she stayed visible without being available, present without being reachable.

Her posture was relaxed in appearance but precise underneath it all, shoulders angled just enough to keep the room in her peripheral vision. Every movement around her registered in quiet measurements—foot placement, tone shifts, the subtle rhythm of conversation. She ate slowly, more out of habit than appetite, gaze occasionally lifting without meaning to linger.

Across from her, Fitz and Simmons filled the space with energy that didn't seem capable of fading even mid-mission. Their conversation bounced between technical speculation and half-finished theories, hands moving as they spoke, voices overlapping in a way that somehow still felt coordinated rather than chaotic. Lucca didn't interrupt, didn't join in—she simply tracked them the same way she tracked everything else.

Ward sat farther down at the island counter, laptop open, food half-eaten beside him. He was quieter than the others, but it wasn't the same kind of quiet Lucca kept; his felt sealed off, deliberate, like a door locked from both sides.

The calm broke cleanly when Ward spoke up into comms, "Sir? We've got an 0-8-4. They want us to go in and check it out"

The words landed heavy, immediate, reshaping the atmosphere in a single breath. Fitz and Simmons stopped mid-conversation almost at the same time, attention snapping toward Ward, then instinctively toward Lucca as if expecting reaction or interpretation.

They got movement instead.

Lucca pushed back from the table without hesitation, chair legs scraping lightly against the floor as she stood. There was no verbal response, no pause for discussion—just a clean, practiced transition from rest to readiness.

She crossed the lounge with controlled speed, heading straight for the bunk corridor. Her presence shifted the air as she passed, measured and focused, already mentally moving through gear checks and contingencies before she reached her space.

Behind her, Fitz and Simmons followed her with their eyes, expressions caught somewhere between curiosity and disbelief at how quickly she'd disengaged from everything else. Ward glanced up briefly from his laptop, tracking her movement with a look that suggested he'd expected urgency—but not that level of immediate certainty.

Lucca didn't look back. She never slowed.
