Training Season’s Over

Summary:

Enid has her oh moment while Wednesday gets a revelation as well…

Notes:

Hi! On popular request I give you this little oneshot. Based on @_kjlm video edit with Dua Lipa’s Training Season song. https://vt.tiktok.com/ZS4nea2Ex/

Work Text:

Agnes held a carefully organized list up to Enid like it was classified intelligence.

“I put together a list of potential boyfriends,” she said, with a mischievous smile. “I already cross-referenced them based on compatible social media profiles. Once you’ve narrowed it down, I can pay each one an invisible visit. See what they’ve left out of their bios.” She ended, matter-of-factly.

Enid stared politely, surprised at Agnes’s initiative. “I appreciate the assist,” she finally said, offering a small, tired smile. “But I think I’m gonna rip a page out of the Wednesday Addams playbook and…take a break from romance.”

Agnes blinked, looking almost offended on behalf of the data.

Enid didn’t wait for a reply. She took a step back and left before the conversation could turn into another well-intentioned intervention.

…

The second the dorm door locked behind her, Enid sighed, walked to her desk and hit play on her laptop.

Dua Lipa’s voice filled the room at full volume.

Are you (are you)

Someone that I can give my heart to? (Heart to)

Or just the poison that I’m drawn to? (Drawn to)

It can be hard to tell the difference late at night

She dropped onto her bed, closed her eyes and let the song play, singing under her breath at first, then louder, getting drawn into the it, felling the lyrics like her own…

Play fair (play fair)

Is that a compass in your nature? (Compass in your nature)

Or are you tricky? ‘Cause I’ve been there (been there)

And, baby, I don’t need to learn my lesson twice

But if you really wanna go there

You should know I…

The memories came unconsciously slow, as if they had been waiting for permission to flow.

Need someone to hold me close

Deeper than I’ve ever known

She remembered the hug after Crackstone. How Wednesday had stood rigid at first, then returned it full force, arms pulling her tight, locking around her like she was the only solid thing left in a collapsing world.

Enid had felt the exact second Wednesday melted into her arms. How she let go of every negative thought and wall that blocked her heart…

Whose love feels like a rodeo

Knows just how to take control

She remembered the Poe Cup. Wednesday, who came back winded to her crying. The concern in her deep brown eyes as she asked her if she was ok. How she told her she would help her take down Bianca, like she wanted to prove a point.

When I’m vulnerable

She’s straight talking to my soul

Conversation overload

Got me feeling vertigo

She remembered the night she told Wednesday she couldn’t wolf out. How she’d admitted she was scared of dying alone, and how Wednesday had opened up about Nero in return. Enid had never seen her look so unguarded. So willing to share...

Are you somebody who can go there?

‘Cause I don’t wanna have to show ya

If that ain’t you, then let me know, yeah

‘Cause training season’s over
(Training season’s over)

The song kept playing and Enid’s voice began to crack.

I tried (I tried)

To see my lovers in a good light (good light)

Her memories of Ajax came with a flush of embarrassment. How she had practically begged him for a date, only for him to stand her up…

Don’t wanna do it just to be nice (be nice)

Then came Bruno… The way his hands had felt on her as they kissed. How close she had come to doing something unthinkable just because wolf society said it was right…

Don’t wanna have to teach you how to love me right

And then Wednesday, in her body, losing control when Tyler lunged her across the room…

I hope (I hope)

It hits me like an arrow (arrow)

How Wednesday had endured her first wolf-out without a full moon, all to protect her…

Someone with some potential (potential)

The moment Wednesday’s massive paw closed around Tyler’s neck, ready to snap it, ready to kill…

Is it too much to ask for?

And how she had stopped the second Enid asked her to. How she had controlled that rage and run straight back to her side…to safety…

Who understands I

Enid sat up slowly, hands pressed to her face.

Need someone to hold me close

Deeper than I’ve ever known

Whose love feels like a rodeo

Knows just how to take control

When I’m vulnerable

She’s straight talking to my soul

Conversation overload

Got me feeling vertigo

It was a dramatic revelation. So charged and heavy.

Are you somebody who can go there?

‘Cause I don’t wanna have to show ya

If that ain’t you, then let me know, yeah

‘Cause training season’s over

“Oh. It’s her…It’s always been her…”

…

On the other side of the door, Wednesday stood perfectly still.

She had seen Enid rush in and heard the door slam. The music, then Enid’s voice, soft at first, and breaking open on the lyrics like she was confessing something she hadn’t meant for others to hear...

But Wednesday heard, she didn’t move. She listened to every word and the feeling pour into them. She listened to the way Enid’s voice cracked…

Can you compete?

Now is your time

Run when you hear that whistle blow

Are you on my team

Or stuck on the sidelines

Waiting for someone to tell you to go?

For someone to tell you to go

Something in her chest, hot and long-contained, shifted.

She had watched Enid try over and over again. First Ajax, the boy who didn’t deserve Enid’s time of day... Then Bruno, the boy who had the audacity to lie and cheat on her…roommate.

Enid’s endless, hopeful searching for someone who could match her brightness without dimming it.

Wednesday had told herself it was none of her concern. That Enid deserved someone like her. Someone softer, caring and less…her.

You should know I

Need someone to hold me close

Deeper than I’ve ever known

Whose love feels like a rodeo

Knows just how to take control

When I’m vulnerable

She’s straight talking to my soul

The song kept playing and Enid kept singing like the words belonged to someone specific…

Wednesday closed her eyes. She understood the lyrics perfectly. She understood what Enid was asking for. And for the first time, she allowed herself the private, dangerous thought… “I am the one who can go there.”

She opened her eyes, turned the handle, and stepped inside.

‘Cause training season’s over

‘Cause training season’s over

Training season’s over

The final notes were still fading when the door swung open.

Wednesday stood in the doorway, black against the hallway light.

She stepped in, shut the door with her foot, and let the quiet settle around them.

Her voice cut cleanly through the silence. “Luckily for both of us, I do not require training, Enid.”

Enid’s hands dropped to her sides, eyes snapping open, bright, and stunned. “Wait…how did you…?”

Wednesday crossed the room quickly, stopping in front of the bed where Enid was sitting. She leaned down and cupped Enid’s face with cool hands, thumbs resting beneath her cheekbones, fingers light against her jaw with the exact pressure required.

She looked at Enid like she had claimed her in silence long before she even realized.

Then she kissed her…controlled, intense, and a little possessive but without hesitation or question. Just with the quiet certainty of someone who had finished her own private reckoning on the other side of the wall and refused to waste another second.

Enid made a soft, broken sound against her mouth as Wednesday tilted her head and deepened the kiss, claiming more…

When she finally pulled back, her forehead rested against Enid’s as they both breathed heavily.

“I heard you,” Wednesday said quietly. “Every word.”

Enid’s hands hovered near Wednesday’s wrists, still half in shock.

“…You really are what I manifested…” Enid whispered, smiling faintly.

Wednesday’s mouth curved, dimples barely there. “Training season is over, Sinclair.”

…

Somewhere between Wednesday’s bed and the closet, Agnes stifled a giggle, covering her invisible mouth with equally invisible hands. She froze in place, barely daring to breathe, hoping they hadn’t noticed her.

When the two of them only leaned back in and continued kissing without the slightest pause, she rolled her eyes in pure relief.

“I’m glad I provided the push you two needed with that list…” She thought with a small, satisfied smile tugging at her invisible lips as she carefully slipped towards the door and vanished without a sound.
