Chapter 1: 1: Do You Want To Hear What I Have So Far...?

Chapter Text

It’s like hearing things from a new perspective.

Strumming your guitar, holding your pick gently, but hard enough to grasp.

The fresh smell of jasmine enveloping your brain in a trance that even the strongest can’t snap out of.

Golden eyes constantly reading over you, like you're a problem waiting to be solved.

His melody-filled voice constantly stuck in your mind.

—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Let it out, been building up, you better let it out.

Say everything that you’ve been meaning now, I want it to burn.

When you tell me that I’m such a wreck, it isn’t easy cleaning up your mess.

It’s like I’ve got a rope around my neck; he says it won’t hurt."

(In this AU, she is changed to he.)

Superfish gently sat down next to me as I stared into my guitar, now and then strumming a note. The moonlit sky gently lit one side of my face, ultimately casting the other in a shadow. My head shot up, eyes flicking to stare at Superfish, as I caught him staring intently at the side of my face. I gave him a small wave before ultimately looking back down at my guitar, a faint blush creeping onto my face. I smiled slightly before strumming another note, humming the tune to my lyrics, “Let it out, been building up, you better let it out.”

“Oooh,” Superfish gushed, “Whatcha thinking about, Dahananjay?”

“You said it wrong… again, but I’m—wait, hold on.” I hesitated, screaming at myself in my mind to stop before it was too late, before ultimately saying, “I found out what my next song is going to be.” I set down my guitar next to me slowly.

I watched Superfish’s eyes glisten with wonder, that unforgettable spark of hope shining through his face.

“I missed that look…” I thought, reminiscing about the last time I saw this peaceful side of Superfish.

“Oooh, what’s it about?” Superfish excitedly questioned.

“It’s about a” I sighed, visibly grimacing at the words I was about to say, “A good friend.”

The word ‘friend’ tasted like rubber tar when it rolled off my tongue. I… didn’t necessarily like using ‘friend’ as a term to describe Superfish, but that’s what we were, and it was going to have to stay that way, unfortunately. No matter how many wishes popped into my mind, I knew it was never going to happen. My heart ached when thinking about topics like these. I knew I couldn’t mope around, constantly in a pit of sadness about my unrequited feelings for Superfish. However, my mind was unwilling to let go of my thoughts. I couldn’t possibly keep wallowing in self-pity!

I saw Superfish tilt his head. “What are they like?”

I internally responded, “He’s nice, cool, kind of… hot. Yeah—and he’s also a bit oblivious to everything I say and do for him.”

“He’s cool,” I uttered, not making it obvious. I gripped my jeans, knuckles turning white.

“That doesn’t help me figure this out one bit.” Superfish sighed, rolling his eyes sarcastically.

“Because I don’t want you to figure out I’m writing a song about you…” I thought, sighing quietly.

“He’s also a bit of an asshole,” I added with a half-grin. “He can’t take the hint for anything I say to him.” I continued further, “But he’s nice, I suppose. He genuinely helps me out.”

I watched Superfish’s expression carefully. His confusion slowly morphed into realization. “Oh, okay,” Superfish murmured.

“Do you want to hear what I have… so far?” I managed to ask, blinking rapidly once done.

“Uh… sure!” Superfish agreed.

I quickly picked up my guitar from my side before taking a deep breath.
