Work Text:

Oh, Kenna.

You should've known better.

The brown-haired girl stands on a cliff, fearfully close to the edge, grass beneath her waving in the gentle wind.

The valleys stretch out under her, hills and mountains rising out of the green earth, rivers cutting their way in between, trees standing firmly.

It's beautiful, only... the regret in Kenna's heart makes everything seem sour.

You don't deserve to see this, Kenna, a voice whispers around her ears.

It's too beautiful for you.

She chokes out a sob, falling to her knees, dropping the bone staff she was grasping, and holds her head in her hands.

What is wrong with her? All she wanted was a unicorn, to feel the wind through her hair, the weightlessness of flight to lighten her heart.

How is this what's become?

Her hands are stained with blood.

Blood she can never wash off.

Blood she had shed.

The moment replays in her mind over and over again.

The screech of a dying unicorn, the way it reverberated around her ears, so loud she wanted to be sick.

The way the unicorn's rider had cried out in pure grief.

She turns in distress, grabbing Goshawk's reins and jumping on, her thoughts becoming too loud to process clearly.

You're a horrible person.

They'll never forgive you.

He'll never forgive you.

And he shouldn't.

The things Kenna has done... she feels disgusted by herself.

Killer.

That's what he would say if he saw her now. He knew what she had done - the dead unicorn's rider had dragged himself through the Eyrie, and told his story to them all, as Kenna had seen from the shadows earlier.

Her fists clench.

Her heart hardens, a numb feeling echoing through her chest.

She wipes the falling tears off her face.

All of them will see what she has become.

And Kenna knows it will hurt.

But for now, as the sun slowly sets over the beautiful Earth Zone, all she can think is...

They were gonna pay for her grief.

sorry about this
