Work Text:
It was quiet in the circus. Caine was in his office. Gangle, Zooble, Kinger, were off to one of the adventures. Pomni didn’t know what it was about, though she remembered that Caine had mentioned something about a rocketshop. She wasn’t sure, though.
Ragatha and Jax were standing outside Pomni’s room. She had told them to ditch this latest adventure, and that she had a surprise waiting for them. They had been waiting for the past ten minutes, though, and they were starting to get impatient.
“Alright guys, you can come in now!” Pomni shouted as Jax opened the door. In the middle of her room was… a door. It was brown and boring looking, and it blurred at the edges, flickering in and out of sight.
“Pomni, why do you have a door in your room?” Ragatha asked, eyeing it as though it was going to disappear. Pomni had to have conjured it, but what was so special about what was behind this door that was worth skipping an adventure for? “Where does it lead to?”
“You’ll see….” Pomni said, concentrating to make the door stop flickering and clearing up the edges. “Alright guys, step right through.”
Jax opened the door and walked through it, Ragatha behind him and finally Pomni. She shut the door behind herself.
Through the door the gang was flashbanged by a bright light, and they had to blink a few times. When their vision finally cleared, it revealed… a large, sunny field stretching as far as the eye could see. The sky was clear and the grass was green and soft, colorful flowers peppering the ground with mesmerizing shades. Behind them was the door. It was shut.
“Woah.” Jax said, looking around. “Woah. Did you conjure all of this??”
“Yep.” Pomni answered smugly, clearly proud of her work. “What do you think of it?”
“It… it’s great!!” Ragatha gushed as Jax nodded his head in agreement. The two of them stood there, just taking it in for a few minutes. Then, Pomni grabbed both of their hands, grinning.
“Cmon guys!! We have this field, all to ourselves… so let’s use it!” she laughed, then started running. Jax stumbled a bit before regaining his balance and following her. The three of them ran across the field, the digital sun shining down on them. When they were tired, they sat down on the grass.
“Ohhh this is so nice.” Jax laid down on the ground, spreading his arms and legs out like a starfish. Making grass angels. “This has got to be, like, miles better than whatever Caine cooked up.”
“You haven’t even been on Caine’s adventure!” Ragatha threw some grass at him. “You are right though. For once.”
Jax gasped, sitting up and placing his hand over his heart. “I’m always right, though! Pom-Pom, back me up here.”
Pomni rolled her eyes, taking a dandelion and blowing it in both their faces.
“You know, this place has… really grown on me,” Pomni said, fiddling with the now-bald stem of the flower. “I think it’s because of you guys.”
“Because of my charming personality? I’m flattered,” Jax smirked.
“Shut up,” Pomni shoved him lightly, not hard enough to make him fall. “I mean it though. I think if it was just me and Caine, I would have abstracted pretty early on.”
“Yeah.” Ragatha agreed. “Kinger was alone for a while with Caine. It’s… impressive, that he managed to last during those times. I’m glad that… that we’re together.”
At those last words, she wrapped her arms around Jax and Pomni in a hug. Jax was surprised at the touch, even though it was becoming more of a frequent occurrence for him, he wasn’t used to it. When they finally pulled away, he laid down, looking at the clouds.
“God, I wish we didn’t have to leave….” Jax threw a blade of grass in the air, catching it with his mouth. “Say, how pissed would you think Caine would be if we just stayed here and never came back? Hypothetically.”
“A high probability of very much so,” Ragatha said. “and don’t eat that grass. Eating grass’ll make you sick, idiot.”
“Sheeesh, Rags, lay off me!! And besides, we can’t get sick here!” Jax grabbed fistfuls of grass, shoving them into his mouth like a wild animal. Ragatha looked away at the sight, wrinkling her nose. Pomni giggled, covering her mouth with her hand.
Then the door appeared in front of them, glowing a bright shade of neon green.
Jax spit out a mouthful of grass. “Huh? Why’s the door glowing, huh?”
“Oh yeah. When the door does that, it means that the adventure is over.” Pomni said, looking at the door. “We should leave before Caine gets mad.”
“Awwwww,” Jax whined, grabbing onto Pomni’s hand. “Cmon, are you sure we can’t stay here longerrrr??”
“Get up, Bunnyboy.” Pomni opened the door, stepping through to her room. Jax groaned as he walked through. After Ragatha came through, Pomni closed the door. “We can come here again!”
And the three of them walked out of Pomni’s room, to the main area. Someday, sometime, they would be back.
