Seoyeon was at this game all for one person, and that one person probably didn’t even know her. The benches were uncomfortable, and the school uniform sticking to her from the heat wasn’t making it better. Who told the weather that it was acceptable to be over 20 celsius in September?
There was only one problem with this crush she had. She was in the last year of sixth form, and Seoyeon was only in the last year of high school, and she was moving away to do further study somewhere else. Not to mention the fact one was considered the epitome of perfection, and another was someone people knew everything and nothing about. And Seoyeon definitely wasn’t the former. This was the only chance she had left, and the universe wasn’t on her side. Every single time she tried to approach Suyun, which was rare, there was a group of people swarming her.
But it was understandable honestly. Suyun could do everything, and she could do everything with almost barely any flaws. Her best shot was usually at singing, her voice was enough to send a whole auditorium of teenagers into a trance. But she could also play dodgeball well, and for this game and a shot at secondary it was absolutely necessary. There was a rumour that at one point she played the guitar, some hobby maybe. And to top it off, she was unmistakingly beautiful. Like those popular girls in rom coms, the ones that have a desk overflowing with love letters. Obviously one girl competing with possibly the whole school it’s almost impossible to get them to notice you, don’t even think about liking you.
For most of the match, Seoyeon just watched how Suyun played and wrote in her diary. ‘The way she lifted up her vest to wipe her face, she's so pretty!!!!’ ‘How is she so confused when people confess their feelings to her… does she not notice anything???’
She didn’t even know who won or lost, or anything on how dodgeball works for that matter. Suyun was all she could care about
A while after the game finished, Seoyeon was in the bathroom, fixing her mascara and lip tint for like the millionth time that day. She stared at the mirror, focusing on herself so much that she didn’t notice Suyun walk in, leaning on the wall near the door and holding a mirror up.
“Seoyeon is your name right?” She said, a small smile plastered on her face.
Seoyeon jumped, falling down from the shock, her face a tomato (literally or not you tell me).
“How do you know it???” Seoyeon shouted, scrambling up and picking her products up frantically.
“How would I not?” Suyun nudged Seoyeon slightly, splashing water from the sink on her, “I always see you looking at me.”
Seoyeon basically ran out of the bathroom, not only because of that encounter, but also lesson time. They all went by in a blur, all she could think about was Suyun, and how she could possibly know her name. Did somebody tell her? Maybe she just noticed and Seoyeon was a bit too brave.
After school, she waited at the bus stop like usual, playing a game on her phone. It was raining, the beads splashing all over her, soaking her and the phone screen. Of course on this day she didn’t bring an umbrella, and this bus stop didn’t have those benches, just a lamppost. She was so concentrated with the game that she didn’t realise that she wasn’t getting wet anymore, and the rain certainly had stopped. By the time she had realised, a soft slender hand was wiping water from cheeks. She looked up to see it was Suyun again, and her face flushed pink.
“How’re you doing cutie?” She cooed, ruffling Seoyeon’s hair.
“I’m doing fine!”
Seoyeon ran off, leaving Suyun there confused.
“Does she like me?” She asked the person behind her.
She still made it home, just now soaking wet, rushing to change clothes. By the time she had finished that and done her remaining homework, it was past 6 pm, and the sun had started shining again. Perfect time to go on a walk.
The normal way was through her streets, into the park, and sometimes a stop at a restaurant to pick up dinner some days, then back home.
She wore a simple blue t-shirt with shorts and those fancy running shoes and began her walk. The sky was a mixture of orange and pink, the sun was setting, wasn’t really normal for a September but whatever. The birds chirped a rhythm alike to a more slow song. Whilst walking mechanically, she daydreamed about one of those medieval castle feasts, probably from a book she read once. She turned to a restaurant at about 8 pm, somewhere she went to regularly. Ordered the usual, a chicken burger and water, and sat down at her usual spot, waiting, staring at something outside of the window. It tasted exactly like every other time she had this meal, perfect.
The next day was a Saturday, and the usual day she went to the local pool. She didn’t really expect anything weird to happen, all her swim gear and towels were there, the children were running around and ignoring the massive red sign in front of them, toy balls getting thrown around in every direction, one missing her head by an inch, what could go wrong? The steps and handlebars were freezing, water specs clinging to her hands and feet. One breath, two, three… It wasn’t that bad.
Most of the time in that water was spent trying to catch a toy fish, throwing the small net and missing horribly, before picking it back up and throwing it again. This happened about 10,000 times before she actually caught it, and started cheering. For a while longer after she just moved around, bouncing a ball around and rushing to reclaim it before a child does. That was how her Saturdays normally went. No drama or the similar stuff, just her and a swimming pool.
She’d normally go on a bus home afterward, but it wasn’t driving through that area for another 15 minutes, so walking it was. The current time was 11:05, and walking would take about half an hour minus stopping for maybe a snack, so 11:45-12:00, if there weren't any distractions.
Even though she hadn’t come across Suyun that whole day, for that matter most of the day prior too, her heart was still racing, maybe it was a foreshadowing, or maybe her heart just decided that she was still a real person that was touching her cheek yesterday. But it was a feeling different from what happened in the bathroom and bus stop. It was nauseating, her stomach was doing flips, and instinctively she stopped right in front of a convenience store. Great time for a snack.
It had all the convenient things, and obviously with that she picked the things most convenient to her, gum and some ice cream.
When she came out, it had started raining again. This time though she brought an umbrella, a basic transparent one. She continued walking, this time mindful of the water and mud puddles building up on the ground, whilst simultaneously scrolling through reels, tightening her grip on her phone the second even anybody walked past.
Not even a few metres from her house, she just stopped in her tracks.
“Seoyeon!” A voice called out, shouting.
She turned around, and when she turned back Suyun was basically in front of her.
“Where did you come from?” Seoyeon clutched her chest.
“Could you maybe… help me?” Suyun was twirling her fingers, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
“With what?”
Suyun leaned forward, basically bending herself because of the height difference, until most of her hair was all in Seoyeons face.
“Your lipstick looks nice, what brand is it?”
“I can’t remember… It’s in my purse somewhere”
“Well can I try it?”
Seoyeon turned to her purse, shuffling through it, before Suyun pushed her head back to face her, then giving her a quick peck on the lips, savouring the lipstick.
“It feels nice too… Could you maybe dm me a photo of it? I think you added my insta last week.”
“Uh, well, of course!” She stuttered, fumbling for her purse zip.
“What’s wrong?” Suyun looked confused, “What’s the big deal in this?”
“I don’t know, maybe it’s because you kissed me???”
Suyun chuckled slightly, writing something on a slip of paper.
“You look cute when you’re flustered, maybe we should go on a date someday?” She cheered, pressing the note into Seoyeon’s palm, before blowing her another kiss and running off.
She just stood there, speechless. First she was convinced Suyun had no clue of her existence, and now they were going to have a date???? Destiny is a strange thing.
