Chapter Text
Wemmbu was never a religious person. He found religion stupid, brainwashing and always tilted to whatever minority the patriarchy decided it hated today.
Maybe a part of it was being forced to go to church consistently by his parents — or well, parent. It was complicated, something about cheating and yadda yadda — he didn’t care too much to remember (he never really could remember anything these days). Even leaning an inch too far behind was enough to disturb his mother’s mood. He hated it.
But as he was dragged to sign up for some youth group (and then proceeded to hide away in the corner), a nearby figure that hardly loomed over his offered an escape from the boredom of a repetitive Sunday afternoon.
“Are you new here? I haven’t seen you before,” the angel thoughtfully noted.
“Uh… yeah,” Wemmbu mumbled, averting his gaze from not-so-visible eyes as he shrunk on himself.
“I see. You didn’t seem like the religious type.”
“Uh, yeah, well you’d be correct on that.”
Despite the sarcasm laced in his reply, the other carried on, which would turn out to be a pleasant surprise as he agreed. “Yeah, me neither — even though I am an angel.”
“Seriously? Isn’t that like… something you have to believe in or whatever…?”
“Well, I just don’t agree with a lot of the views and things. I believe there is a god, but I don’t believe that our world has truly depicted them.”
“I… guess that makes sense? I don’t– really care, honestly.”
But despite that, despite Wemmbu’s hesitance and demeanor, he just continued on. Like it was normal. Like Wemmbu was something normal. Like Wemmbu was someone.
And maybe, just maybe, he found himself too occupied in conversation to fidget nervously with the tiara pin adorning his hair. Maybe, a smile grew instead of the withdrawn shield he had always wielded. Maybe, he found that thing called ‘companionship’ in someone. With Egg–
“–chan…?”
“Yeah Wemmbu?” Egg provided, steady voice unlike his fatigue-ridden one as they looked up at the sky.
“What’s your goal for the new year? I mean, you already asked me mine so…” he grumbled, words hardly above a whisper in contrast to his loud personality.
“That’s a good question, bro. I didn’t actually think of one yet–“
“Are you for real, bro? Seriously?”
“Yo chill!” A bubbly laugh found its way through the cool air as Egg was pushed lightly to the ground. “Bro, the view is crazy. You gotta see this.”
“I don’t want my hair to get dirty, though?”
“Bro, who cares? You can just wash it later if it’s that bad.”
“Fine, fine… I’m too tired for this,” he let our a yawn, groggily finding his way towards the ground. “Laying on the grass does not feel as great as anime makes it look, bro.”
“Bro, stop complaining for once. You gotta be grateful for this view– yo, I think they’re doing a countdown right now.”
And Egg was right, the noise of a crowd chanting down to one was heard from their spot against the soft grass.
“Yo wait, I’m gonna come back in like… 10 seconds.”
“Uh, ok bro.”
Wemmbu kept to his word, slowly fading from sight as he left with a single message that only made Egg sigh with a smile: “See you tomorrow.”
And when the countdown reached 5 seconds, he could see a figure admiring the sight — at least, until they remembered their promise.
“5!”
Wemmbu ran, his usual smirk far wider as a cackle threatened to spill.
“4!”
Egg only waited, because what else was there to do?
“3!”
He could see a familiar face laying down, eyes closed until it was time.
“2!”
The angel was a bit shocked that Wemmbu hadn’t reached him by now, but at least that meant he could actually keep to his word — or close — this time.
“1!”
Wemmbu ran, laughing through a smile as he reached Eggchan, panting as a sign of his efforts.
“Happy new year!”
And the world was loud, celebatory as fireworks decorated the sky.
“Bro! I haven’t seen you since last year,” Wemmbu exasperatedly said through heavy pants, plopping on the ground almost cartoonishly as he turned his head to face at Egg.
But he was silent. He was never silent, alsays acknowledging Wemmbu’s every word with either a quiet hum or a nonchalant response.
“Egg?”
There was a faint beeping.
“Eggchan…?”
“Wemmbu, are you sure you don’t want to stay at my place?”
“Yeah, I’m fine, bro. I don’t have anything that I’ll need if I want to survive,” he said, a great contrast to the concern clear in Egg’s voice. But he didn’t process it– he wasn’t thinking rationally at all.
Why couldn’t he not be stupid for once– just why did he have to be so impatient?!
“Okay then… I trust you, Wemmbu.”
And it wasn’t ‘I’ll’ or it wasn’t ‘for once’. Why did Egg have to trust him how did Wemmbu fail Egg? Just how incompetent was he?
Wemmbu ran, his usual smirk absent as he rushed out of his bed.
It didn’t matter that he wasn’t supposed to be out– he didn’t deserve it, anyway.
Egg only waited, because what else could he do?
He was stuck to a hospital bed, unconscious and somehow still breathing.
He could see a familiar face lying down, the one he’d failed, eyes closed as he knew they’d never open again — he just knew it as he approached whatever room that doctor said Egg was in.
It’s all your fault, Wemmbu.
The angel probably would’ve been shocked that Wemmbu hadn’t reached him by now, considering how impulsive he was anyway.
It only meant he couldn’t keep his promise this time.
Wemmbu ran, hardly caring for how he looked to all the people who somehow hadn’t caught him, panting as only pure desperation fueled him.
“See you tomorrow.”
And the world was silent, only the thrum of the countless monitors and machines hooked up to his best friend providing any background noise.
Wemmbu was never a religious person; but he’d beg and give and plead to any god that saw his prayers for his one and only best friend Egg

But the only words spoken was the grim reminder that Eggchan would be gone. Was gone. That was a more appropriate label for his sins. He murdered Egg, after all.
