The Testar dorm awoke to the sound of Cha Eugene banging a gong in the living room. As well as to the sound of Kim Raebin screaming, “Oh my God, why do you have a gong?”
“It’s to call emergency meetings with!”
The gong was confiscated by Chungwoo.
Once quiet had finally been restored, and all the confused and groggy members installed in the living room, Eugene finally revealed the cause for all the drama. With a crisp snap, he straightened the thick sheaf of printed pages covered in dense text that he was holding.
“There will be smut. You have been warned.” (“Huh?” Ahyeon said, bewildered.) “Chapter one: ‘Eugene knew making an anonymous account to keep tabs on his own hater was unwise. He knew that messaging said hater was even stupider. But he was already crazy, so perhaps this entire sequence of events was inevitable: after crazy, comes stupid. And after stupid, comes love. Of course when he first messaged the twitter user chagenesux, he had no idea that–’”
“Hold on.” Moondae’s disgusted tone caused all heads in the room to swivel in his direction. “Cha Eugene, are you reading us fanfiction about yourself?”
“It’s not just any old fanfic about myself! It’s fic someone wrote shipping me with my own alter ego hater account!”
Moondae took a very deep breath. And then the dorm descended into chaos.
“Your alter ego what?”
“They’re shipping who?”
“Go back–”
“This is what you woke us up for?!”
“Where did you get that stupid gong?”
According to Eugene, it was very simple. One day, for fun, he’d created an anonymous twitter account dedicated to hating on himself. He figured he could use it to go undercover among Testar’s haters, spy on them, and sow discord among their ranks. (At this point, Chungwoo glared at Moondae in a way that eloquently conveyed that this was all his fault. Moondae averted his gaze.) He didn’t expect the account to get so popular, especially among actual fans.
“It’s fun,” Eugene concluded. “Plus I can blow off steam when I mess up on stage by posting about it, and it’s fine because no one knows it’s me.”
“It’s fine?” Moondae echoed. “Fine? The amount of time I spend trying to minimize the hate we get online, and you’re just…”
“I only post things that are funny!” Eugene assured him.
“That so does not–”
“Traitor!” Kim Raebin summed up, pointing an accusing finger in his face.
“Obviously I only post bad things about myself, dumbass.” (Ahyeon made a small, wounded noise, unheard by the group.) “Anyway, listen– Kim Raebin, cover your ears, this isn’t for you. Hyungs, the real reason I called this meeting is that I need beta readers. Who’s going to proofread my response fic?” He pulled out another, much slimmer sheaf of printed pages. “It’s about chagenesux coolly rejecting that loser Cha Eugene and dating the rest of Testar instead. I need a second pair of eyes on it.”
The silence was deafening.
Moondae said, “I’m going back to sleep.”
“Hey! The emergency meeting isn’t done yet!”
“Eugene-ah, you shouldn’t feed the trolls…” Bae Sejin had been through at least eight stages of grief this morning, and he looked it.
“You’re all stifling my creativity.”
Lee Sejin ruffled his hair as he passed by, following Moondae’s lead. “Hey, it’s funny and all, but it’s too early for this. And,” he added as an afterthought, “Moondae really does work hard to keep the hate to a minimum. Sejin hyung’s right. Don’t feed the trolls.”
Eugene pouted as the members kept dispersing. “None of you see the vision. It’s not funny, it’s hilarious.”
“But Eugene,” Ahyeon cut in, sounding upset. He hadn’t left the couch, where he was still clutching a blanket around himself. He said, “I wish you wouldn’t call yourself a loser or say those mean things about yourself.”
That night, Twitter users were shocked to find the @chagenesux page completely scrubbed clean. All tweets, including the beloved collections of ugly screenshots, had been deleted. The profile picture had been changed to a blank white circle, and the user description simply read, “sorry, suddenly thought abt how this might make ahyeon sad so i had to stop.”
It was the end of an era. Many Cha Eugene fans had no idea what to feel. To some of them, the account had been a mortal enemy. To others, a grouchy old neighbor, or even an icon of the fandom. Many posted expressions of loss and confusion. There was a scramble to archive all that remained of his tweets.
Meanwhile, in an entirely different fandom, something stirred on the wind, like withered leaves whipping down an abandoned road or the scent of an approaching storm rising in the air.
