"Aaaand that is all I have for y'all today! Meeting's over now, get your behinds home."
Head Nurse Vix dismissed, setting something on the table and shooing the room full of the Animal Corp Hospital's faculty out. Chatter filled the room as the rest of the hospital staff made their way out. Everyone left until it was just the agent and the intern. The agent, Clawdia, was marking something down on her computer, and the intern, Buddy, was busy with staring blankly into the middle distance.
Buddy looked over at Clawdia. They assumed what she was typing up was for her true job, as a secret agent. After all, she was investigating Animal Corp. They weren't going to intrude on her business, though.
They went back to zoning out. It'd be a long day, the anomalies were really aggressive all day. The intern had to fend a lot of them off by themself, but using their own anomalous abilities to keep their coworkers and patients safe was tiring. They honestly just wanted to go home and play something.
As their eyes wandered around the room, they spotted what Miss Vix had set down after the meeting; a laser pointer.
They glanced at Clawdia.
A terrible idea formed in their mind. They felt their sharp teeth as they grinned.
They reached across the table for the laser pointer, careful to not alert the feline agent. They clicked it on, pointing it at the floor.
"Hey Clawdia?"
They asked, trying to keep themself from giggling too loudly.
"Yes?"
She replied, not looking up for her computer.
"Lo- Look over here."
They pointed to the floor, where the red dot was. The feline pried her eyes from the screen, and looked at the dot. Immediately, her pupils dilated. Buddy quietly snickered.
They moved the pointer, and Clawdia's gaze followed, her pupils dilating more. The more the dot darted around, the larger her pupils became. She shifted in her chair to better stalk the little laser.
Buddy was struggling to not burst out laughing. They had to hold on, though.
They moved the pointer to an empty wall, to which the agent practically dashed to it and slapped her paw where it was being projected. She kept slapping the dot as it moved, even as it was moved higher up on the wall.
The intern watched in amazement as Clawdia chased the thing all across the room, up walls and along the floor.
The funny thing? Despite her laser pointer-induced trance, she was still careful – graceful? Debatable – about chasing the dot, she was able to avoid knocking things over or making things fall. As much as Buddy found this amusing, they could also feel a warmth in their chest.
They were torn from their thoughts when they started spinning the pointer around the agent on the floor. She began chasing the thing not unlike how Randy, the older secretary out of the two at the hospital, would chase his tail when in a less professional setting.
They couldn't hold back their laughter now.
They made a weird, long snorting sound, the noise devolving into loud cackling.
"Wh– BUDDY!"
Clawdia exclaimed as she snapped out of it, her ears tilting back and her tail shooting up like a rocket and puffing slightly.
"OH GIMME THAT!"
She rushed over to Buddy and grabbed the laser pointer. The intern was too busy laughing their butt off to resist her.
She tossed the thing back onto the table before plopping back down at her computer.
"S– Sorry!"
Buddy managed to get out as their laughter became wheeze-laughter.
They quickly stopped their giggling as they realized an air of awkwardness had completely engulfed the room.
The intern went back to what they'd been doing originally; staring into the middle distance. They sat like a statue in their chair, their ears drooping and now completely avoiding even looking at Clawdia.
Silence filled the air.
...
"...Quit sitting like you messed up."
The agent muttered, just loud enough for Buddy to hear her.
"Uh... Alright."
They responded, unsure if she was telling the truth.
It fell quiet again. The only thing that could be heard was the clicking of keys and the sound of the two breathing.
They felt a lump form in their throat.
"...I'm really not mad at you, Buddy. I was just flustered. Just... please don't do that in front of people, 'kay?"
She piped up again, assuring the rabbit. The intern finally looked at her again.
"O-Okay."
They replied, their ears finally returning to their normal position.
The silence that fell between them again was no longer awkward.
Buddy began silently watching Clawdia, watching her type, her paws flying across the keyboard.
That was, until she slammed the computer closed.
"Oh my goodness– FINALLY that thing's done."
She sighed loudly. She stood up in a haste and stretched a bit.
"It's late, I'm going home. You should too, idiot."
She commented, placing a hand on her hip and gesturing out the door with a thumb
"I-I will!"
The intern stated, shooting out of their chair as if they were order to. The feline let out a chuckle.
"Cya tomorrow, Buddy."
She said as she made her way out.
"Se- Uh- I'll be- be there!"
They stammered, mentally cringing at themself for their inability to formulate words sometimes.
They watched as she left.
As Buddy packed up their things, they could only think about one thing.
Clawdia was not as cool and nonchalant as movies made secret agents out to be.
