Work Text:
Colts obsession with stunts began with watching his first action movie that wasn’t an animation. Seeing real life people being flung around and how they fell from heights, not breaking anything. Which Colt was surprised by, since he did break his arm falling from a tree once.
Seeing this and not understanding, he turned towards Casey. Who was sitting on the couch watching the movie with him, while Colt sat on the ground.
“Why is it that they don’t get hurt from falling out of buildings but I broke my arm falling out of a tree?” Colt asked, a little offended that he got hurt and the movie people didn’t.
Casey turned his attention to Colt. Casey always did try to give each twin equal amount of attention and to spend alone time with them separately. It was just Colt and Casey in the house. Court had taken Ryland to a science fair but Colt had wanted to stay home.
“It’s because they have equipment around them that allows the actors to fly or fall without them getting hurt.” Casey explained, well he tried but the confused look Colt gave told him he needed to explain more.
Casey paused the movie where someone was falling “They will have a big mattress here on the ground to catch the actor, but they edit it out so that you don’t see it in the movie. The actor or stunt double will have a harness around them sometimes to catch them.” Casey said as he tried to show Colt on the tv what they will have but what you couldn’t see.
Colt made a small ah sound, nodding along as he sort of understood what Casey was saying.
“What’s a stunt double?"
Court and Ryland return home just after lunch. Ryland had talked his ear off nonstop at the fair, but Court didn’t complain one bit as nodded along and asked his brother questions. After he got custody of the twins, he was the happiest when Ryland talked nonstop without being scared of being hit.
He really wanted to kill his abusive piece of shit father when he kicked Court out. He had stopped himself and got a job and a place to stay in, even made room for the twins. He had to show the law that he was better suited to take care of his four year old brothers. It has been three years since then.
Court found Colt and Casey in the living room. They seemed to be in deep conversation as the two didn't turn to greet him. Ryland happily made his way to his room to put away all the things he got from the fair, no doubt he and Colt will talk about it all later.
Moving closer to the two Court could begin to hear what they were talking about. “So they get other people to play as the actors?” Colt asked.
Casey nodded “They also get people to do stunts that you can’t see. Like with the car, that was someone else driving it.” Casey finished, smiling when Colt gave him an amazed face.
“What are you two talking about?” Court finally asked, standing behind the couch. Colt stood up on the couch and gave Court a hug. Casey looked up and smiled at him saying a quiet welcome home.
“Casey was explaining how the movie people don't get hurt from falling out of buildings.” Colt said excitedly as he started to rapidly explain what Casey had told him. “They even have stunt doubles!” Colt exclaimed.
“Really?” Court asked, pretending it was his first time hearing about this. Ryland walked back out and went to give Casey a hug, smiling up at him and giving a yeah it was so cool when he asked how the fair was.
Ryland looks at his brothers talking before looking up at Casey questionably. “Didn’t Casey drive in the movies?” Ryland asked as he remembered hearing something along those lines.
Colt immediately turned his head to him, knocking Court's jaw with the sudden movement. “Yes I did.” Casey answered, feeling a little shy at how Colt was looking at him.
“Wow really! Is that why you know so much?” Colt asked as his eyes basically twinkled. Casey gave a nod and stood up to walk to Court.
“Yes, but I only did car stunts.” Casey answered, giving Court a kiss as he wrapped his arm around Casey's waist.
“You mean death rolls.” Court grumbled, grimacing as he remembered how Casey flipped in those cars, he saw him work at set a few times. Casey looked at him with something like annoyance as he shook his head.
“Do you still do it, can I see?” Colt asked as he bounced excitedly on the couch cushions. Ryland was also looking at him with curiosity.
“Not anymore, but I can show you the movies I worked in.” Casey said seeing how the twins lit up at his suggestion. Court of course, was still mumbling to himself, not happy about the topic.
“Why don’t you do it anymore?” Ryland asked this time knowing he and his brother wanted to know why.
Casey simply turned his head to Court and tilted his head up at him with a knowing smile on his face. Court furrowed his brows and exhaled.
“Because I didn’t like seeing Casey getting thrown around like a ragdoll.” Court answered in a cross tone.
The twins looked at their older brother like he stole their candy. Both talking at the same time to make their disappointment known.
Casey quietly laughed and raised his hand a little. The twins quickly shut their mouths as they waited for him to talk. It always impresses Court when the twins would stop talking and allow Casey to talk when he raised his hand, of course it didn’t work when Court did it.
“If you want, I can ask my old agent if he could show us some stunts on set?” Casey asked, more at Court than the twins and waited for confirmation. The twins set their eyes on their big brother and gave him puppy eyes. Court's weakness being the twins, he sighed
“Fine, we can go see how they do it.” Court said and the twins screamed with excitement.
A week later they were on a movie set, the twins were oohing and aahing at what was around them standing next to their brother. Who was not happy being here and made it clear on his face. Casey was talking to an older man as they caught up.
Turning back to the brothers Casey introduced the man, Jimmie, to them and asked if he could show the twins some movie magic. “Of course, anything for the best car stunt man.” The man said and started to show the twins around.
Watching the twins happily look around them and asking questions to the man and others around, Court couldn’t help but give a smile as his brothers enjoyed themselves. Casey moved closer to Court and rubbed his arm in comfort.
“God, I hate it here.” Court said softly, looking at his lover. Casey's eyes softened as he gave a smile to Court.
They were slowly walking behind the twins as Court refused to let the twins leave his view. Casey was greeted and recognised by a few people as they walked on set. Someone was even asking him for advice for some set and mechanic things.
Stunts were happening around them and Court was getting restless as he looked at the dangerous work happening around him. Even if his job was more dangerous in law enforcement.
Colt came up running to Court with a big smile on his face. “Can I do a stunt?” Colt asked his brother and Casey. Excitement could be seen and heard. The man walked up to them with Ryland.
“They’re doing some falling stunts and the boy wants to do one.” Jimmie said, shaking his head with a smile. Ryland moved to Casey and held his leg to show he wasn’t interested.
“No.” Court said, looking at the man and back down to Colt. Colt pouted up at his brother, begging him to say yes, but he refused.
Casey sensed a tantrum approaching and took a hold of Court's hand. He gave Court a look, the same look he gives when he is being unreasonable. Court squinted his eyes and stared back. They kept staring at each other, having a silent conversation with their eyes.
Court's gaze softened and his shoulders dropped. Looking back at his brother with a sigh.
“Fine, but only one.” Court said looking at the man who gave him a reassuring smile. Colt cheered and hugged his brother's waist before running to the building they were jumping off of.
They watched as Colt got harnessed in and how he made his way to the top of a five story building. Ryland, not like this, asked Casey to pick him up. Court was hugging the two close and Casey could feel the hold on his arm tighten.
They saw Colt on top happily waving down at them, with a big smile on his face. A photographer next to them took photos for them. Casey had asked him to, wanting to have the memory of Colts first stunt.
When he finally jumped off, both Court and Ryland screamed and held Casey tighter. Casey in turn cheered with a few other people on set. Colt safely fell down and was laughing with glee.
Safe to say when Colt became a stunt man years later. Casey had been blamed for his career choice.
