Only you.

Summary:

When you finally got your dream job at the CBI, your life got better. You had amazing colleagues, and one of them was Jane, Patrick Jane. His way of observing things and people was interesting. He observed things like no else did, and that made you feel..weird. Not a bad kind of weird, a comforting kind of weird. He made you feel like no one else ever did, even though he wasn't so close to you. It felt like both of you made each other feel..comforted. Warm.

Work Text:

It was a warm and sunny Saturday when your parents invited you and the rest of the family to eat lunch at their house. You told them everything about the last months since you joined the CBI, and about your colleagues. When you mentioned that you were working with Jane, your parents expression changed.

''Are you really sure about this? You know..I heard that that guy can read people's thoughts..'' said your mom.

''Apparently, he can tell when someone lies. He'll go through all of your personal info! Don't you think that is a bit dangerous?" said your grandma before drinking her wine.

''My friend knows him...he's a selfish lunatic! You should find another job..'' said your uncle.
You didn't understand what all of this anger was about. Jane wasn't that bad as people said he was. Most people only know him from his old fake psychic show.

''Hm..he's alright..he's smart and good at his job. I'm actually glad that I work with him.'' you said calmly while taking a bite of your chicken.

''You like him, huh?" said your aunt sarcastically and chuckled. The whole table laughed then looked at you.

"What?! No! We're not even that close..." you said and took a sip of your wine.

After a few hours of suffering, you finally left the house and started heading to your house.

On Monday, around evening, Jane suggested going to a bar. Sure, it was a Monday but the team just solved a hard case and that was worth celebrating, after all, who wouldn't like a few drinks. Cho didn't like the idea of getting drunk on a Monday, Van Pelt was too tired and Rigsby didn't wanna be without Van Pelt. The remaining members were You and Jane.

...

It was your 3rd drink now, and Jane chose not to get drunk, since there was only the two of you. You looked at Jane who was sitting in front of you. He was looking outside on the street, then at the bartender, then outside again. A small smile ran across your face, you were blushing, probably because of the alcohol...or Jane? Maybe both.

"..Y'know...'' you said with your slurred voice, Jane looked at you. ''..I love you..like..a looot..'' you said, shaking your drink and looking at it, your voice was very slurred. Jane looked at you. He had a slightly disappointed expression—not that he didn't like you. He did. A lot. He just wasn't ready. It's been so long since his wife died. He still missed her.

''..I..I don't know..I like you too..y'know, Y/N..but I'm not..I can't do this, alright? Not yet..''
Jane said quietly, his eyes looked a bit watery.

You knew. You knew how he felt and you understood it. But you were too drunk to react normally. A few tears ran down your face.

''I think we're done for tonight..I'll drive you home.'' Jane said quietly.

''No...I'll call a taxi or something.''

''No. I don't trust you with this. I'll drive you..'' Jane insisted.

You got angry. ''No! Leave me alone! I'm tired of this! Please shut the fuck up and leave me alone!" You shouted. Everyone in the bar looked at you.

You smashed your drink on the table and ran to the exit.

''Shit..shit!" Jane mumbled to himself and ran to the door.

''Hey! Who's gonna pay for the drinks?!" the bartender shouted.
Jane stopped and looked back at the bartender. He quickly walked back to the counter and paid for the drinks then ran back outside. He stopped near the road, took off his suit and looked around.
He saw you on the second side of the large road stepping inside a random taxi.

''Hey!" he shouted as much as he could but it was too late, the car has already started. He sighed and bent down. A few of his tears that he didn't even feel fell on the side road, he wiped them off with his hand. He stood up straight and gasped. He was worried about you. He didn't even know where that taxi was heading, but it for sure wasn't to your house. Your house was near the bar and a different direction. He crossed the road, there was a lot of traffic, we could still see your taxi. He quickly waved at another taxi that stopped. He stepped inside and said;

''Hey, you see that other taxi? Just follow it please.'' Jane ordered.

''Are you sure? I can't do that, I don't know who's in there, mister.'' the taxi man said.

''Oh-uh, it's my friend. It's complicated, please just go.''

The taxi man sighed and followed your taxi. Your taxi stopped at the beach. You stepped out and the taxi left. Jane's taxi got into traffic again so he lost 10 minutes, but the traffic was quick and a few minutes later, Jane arrived at the beach.

''Thanks man.'' Jane nodded and gave the taxi man his money.

Jane got closer to the ocean. There wasn't a lot of people. Most people were sitting at the kiosk and drinking some ''Sex On The Beach'', some were hugging and looking at the sky. The temperature was okay, there was a little bit of wind. The sun was slowly setting. Everyone was having a good time, but you were nowhere to see. Jane looked at the ground for footprints. There wasn't a lot of them, and there was only one type of footprint that was from converse shoes—those that you wore. You only wore converse shoes, it was like a personality trait for you. He followed these footprints. They headed to a few bushes that separated this beach from a second one. Jane heard someone crying. Just a little bit. He tried to get through the bushes, it was hard. When he got through, he saw someone. It was you. You were sitting on the sand, slightly crying and holding something, something that looked like a handkerchief. A fabric one. It was Jane's. You probably took it when it was laying around. Jane tapped your back.

''Hey..'' he said softly and hugged you from behind. You recognized that voice. It was Jane's. The voice you loved.

''I'm sorry Jane..I..I...'' you couldn't talk. The guilt inside you was eating you alive.
''I was acting so stupid..I..I shouldn't have had gotten mad..I didn't mean to...'' you said while sobbing.

Jane sighed. ''I know..I know..'' he said, resting his chin on your shoulder. ''Now...calm down..you're too stressed out to think clearly..''

After a few minutes, Jane spoke up again. ''Y'know..I thought about it..I, I'm ready. I wasn't thinking clearly before. You were drunk and..yeah...I'm sorry. I am ready now.'' he said softly and kissed you on the forehead.
