The Deciding Match

Summary:

The prompt idea I had at 10:00 PM:
IDEA IDEA
What if a modern AU where ed is famous or something (maybe alchemy is a sport like pro bending) and he has a ton of fangirl but didn’t even notice lol

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

“Eek! It’s Edward Elric!”

“Oh my gosh, will you sign this for me?!”

“He’s even hotter in real life!”

“You’re so cool, Edward!”

Ed walked along the path into the stadium where tonight’s match was, completely oblivious to the chorus of fangirls. He smiled and hummed to himself.

“Edward “Fullmetal” Elric, the youngest state-ranked pro alchemist of all time, is sure to have another legendary fight tonight! He’ll be facing off against the Flame Alchemist, Roy Mustang, and the winner will advance from the Aurelian to Philosopher’s Stone league. Winner takes all!” The announcer shouted. The stadium cheered wildly.

Pro alchemy had been a sport for basically as long as Amestris had existed, but the sport really only started picking up when Fuhrer Bradley, a huge fan of the sport, had started leading the country.

Roy Mustang, Edward’s opponent, strode onto the field, waving to his adoring fans. He and Edward had almost tied for popularity during a recent public opinion poll. Almost. Edward had pulled ahead, due to his notoriety as the youngest state-ranked alchemist.

Of course, none of this was known to the Fullmetal Alchemist himself. The thought had never even occurred to him that the rest of the non-Mustang fans in the audience were there for him.

“You ready?” Roy “Flame Alchemist” Mustang asked, cracking his knuckles. Ed smirked. It’d been a while since he had a really good fight. The timer started and the fight begun.

…………

“And in a shocking turn of events, our contestants seem to have tied!” The announcer exclaimed. Ed looked up. He hadn’t even noticed the time running out. He groaned.
“Come on, does the time even matter that much? I wanted to beat that jerk!” He said to no one in particular.

“Aaa! That’s our Edward!” Someone shrieked from the audience.

“He’s so strong, he’s always ready for a fight!” Screamed another.

“Mustang was about to wipe him on the ground!” Someone shouted.

But despite the various protestings, the stadium lights dimmed, and both the audience and the fighters started leaving for the night.

Roy approached Edward. “Hey, nice fighting, Fullmetal. You gave me a real run for my money.” He extended a hand. Edward grabbed it. “Likewise! I can’t wait to beat you into the ground next time.” “Only if I don’t beat you first.” Roy chuckled.

“Brother!” Alphonse Elric exclaimed when he saw Edward outside the stadium.

“Hey, Al! Did you see me? I could have crushed that old-timer, right?” “You looked pretty evenly matched, brother.” Al said.

“I don’t like the way all those girls were cheering for you…” Winry said, peeking out from behind Al.

“Hey, Winry, I didn’t see you there! But why don’t you like the fans?” Ed kissed her on the cheek.

Winry huffed. “Are you really that oblivious?”

Yes. Yes he was.

Notes:

Okay so my reasons for making Ed kind of a cinnamon roll: Because it’s a modern AU and child soldiers aren’t really legal, he has CONSIDERABLY LESS TRAUMA then he does in canon. Of course there’s the stress of being in a pro sport, but it’s something he does out of love for it rather than necessity.
