the hippest and the jealousest

Summary:

Kamala visits Bruno in California. And decides to set him up with one of her new superhero friends.

Work Text:

Bruno's been in California for a couple months now. Kamala misses him. She tries not to make that too obvious, he already feels bad enough leaving so soon after everything happened, missing so much of her new superhero-ing.

But she's finally visiting him!

She gets to see his dorm room, and, well, him. Nakia wasn't able to join, unfortunately. But it's only a couple more months until Bruno comes back for summer break.

"This is where you've been sleeping?"

The dorm isn't bad. Really. Well, not compared to his room back home. That is a mess.

"What? You have a problem with it?" Bruno drops onto his bed, the smile he's been sporting since he picked her up at the airport doubling.

"Whaaat? Nooooo," Kamala replies, sitting next to him. "I just think it's terrible and I hate it."

Bruno gasps, slapping a hand to his chest. "Wow. My own best friend. Insulting my living space."

"There's.. definitely something living in your space."

Bruno snorts. "Okay, see, now that's just rude."

"I'm just being honest."

"Sure." Bruno bumps his shoulder into hers. "Nakia really couldn't join you? I've missed her."

"More than me?" Kamala puts on her best pout, getting another laugh from Bruno.

"Well you call me at least twice a day," he says. "Nakia acts like she doesn't have the time for me anymore."

Kamala laughs right back at him, mostly because she's knows for a fact that they text daily. "I think you're just jealous she has a girlfriend and you don't," she says, shrugging.

"Okay, so, uh, Zoe and Nakia are not dating, by the way."

"You aren't denying the jealousy."

"I am not jealous of my two non-dating friends. Or, one non-dating friend, and one non-dating kinda-friend."

"You are jealous! You so are. It's okay—"

"I'm not."

"You are," Kamala says again. "But it's okay. I can introduce you to my friend."

Bruno pauses. "Your friend," he repeats. "I didn't realize you had friends to introduce me to now."

"Uh, yeah. Of course I do. Because I'm cool. Unlike you."

Bruno scoffs. "I'm cool."

"I saved the universe. You're in college. We are not the same."

"Oh, so you get powers and suddenly you're too hip for me?"

"Please don't say hip."

"No no, you're very hip."

"You're so lame."

"So hip. The most hip ever. The hippest."

"I am not hip!" Kamala laughs, hitting his arm.

"Yeah you are!"

Kamala groans, leaning sideways until her head lands against his shoulder. "Nuh-uh. I don't like this. Change subject."

Bruno sighs exaggerately, rolling his eyes. "Fine. Tell me about your 'friend.'" He puts airquotes around the word, which is just rude, quite frankly. But Kamala lets it slide because he is so clearly jealous that it almost causes her physical pain.

"Yay." Kamala sits up instantly. She shifts to face him, pulling her legs up onto the bed. "Okay. Well, his name is Harley, his codename is Iron Lad. Which I think kinda sucks but he likes it so, hey, who am I to judge—"

"Judgy is basically your middle name at this point."

"Shush. Anyways, he, like, knew Iron Man. Before he died. Remember when his house got blown up and he was declared dead for like a week?"

"No, I don't. I was four."

"Okay, well, he was—"

"Crazy."

"—And he stayed at Harley's house. And apparently Harley helped him repair his armor and stuff. So he's like really smart."

"Is he, now?"

"Well not as smart as you. Maybe. Don't worry, you're my favorite smart guy, you know that."

"Favorite. Wow. Higher than Tony Stark?"

"Duh." Kamala rolls her eyes. "Is that even a question? You're like, 100 times cooler than Tony Stark."

"Okay, now you're stretching it a bit. I don't think that's possible."

"Oh, shut up and let me compliment you."

"Never. It's now allowed. As my friend you are legally obligated to insult me at every opportunity."

"Fine. Your hair is greasy."

"That's more like it."

"So, back on topic," Kamala squints at him, "do you want his number?"

Bruno mumbles something Kamala doesn't quite catch.

"What's that?"

"Yeah, I want his number."

"Great! 'Cause I already gave him yours."
