Work Text:

Intern sighed as he sat down at the front desk, fidgeting with a pen. It was currently the night shift at the hospital, nobody else was there — well except for the lady who ran the shop, but he didn’t talk to her often.

The clock slowly ticked, it had been rather slow tonight, only having been a couple patients over the past few hours that Intern had been working.

Typically the rabbit would be fine on nights like these, drinking coffee to stay awake. However, the hospital somehow messed up their order and got supplies to make decaffeinated coffee instead of the stuff they usually get.

This one, annoyed Intern a bit — since he hates decaf coffee — and two, didn’t help him stay awake at all!

Intern continued to click his pen, letting out a yawn, he had already been getting tired.

A few more minutes passed, no patients, not even any of the other creatures possibly hiding in the building came to bother him.

‘Screw it,’ intern thought as he laid his head down on the desk, letting out another yawn, ‘if anyone walks in they could just wake me up anyways…’

Intern closes his eyes, his head laying in his arms as he drifted off to sleep.

The Stalker hid behind the corner in the waiting room, watching to make sure the rabbit had fallen asleep before quietly walking towards the office, slowly opening the door to not make any noise.

It stared at him, their eyes slowly blinking, they had never been able to get this close to the Intern before — since he was scared of them, and it was rather shy.

They watched how his back moved up and down as he breathed, how his little tail laid on the chair, how his face was sat slightly tilted in his arms.

It stared for what was probably longer than necessary, until it noticed the Intern’s face scrunched up a little.

He was probably uncomfortable in the chair.

The Stalker carefully approached him, wrapping their arms around his torso and picking him up. It tiptoed towards the far corner of the office, laying him down against the wall.

They leaned back up, thinking for a moment before quietly walking towards the door, stepping into the hallway and looking towards the middle doors.

It stepped towards the shop, seeing the shopkeeping nurse as she messed with a teddy bear on her desk.

It took her a few seconds of the tall figure staring at her before she noticed it, flinching back as they stared at each other.

“…Hey there..?” The dog said, a bit frightened. She hadn’t really seen the Stalker before, it only ever bothered the other employees.

The Stalker rattled out a sound, trying to speak

“Do you, uh, need something..?”

It nodded its head, speaking again, this time more understandable, it sounded more like blanket.

“Oh uh- you want a.. blanket?” The nurse asked.

The Stalker nodded their head.

She looked over to the back of her shop, turning to rummage through some boxes, her ears flopping as she looked.

After a minute or two of searching, she pulls out a light blue blanket. The nurse turns back to them, holding it up, “would this work?”

It inspects the blanket for a moment before taking it in their claws, it was a little small, but it would do. The Stalker nods their head happily, giving her a wave as it turns and walks away, back towards the office.

The dog sighs — as she had been holding her breathe — still a bit confused, but oh well, that’s just what you get with this job.

The Stalker steps back into the room, relieved to see Intern still laying where they put him.

It creeps over to him, unrolling the blanket and carefully spreading it on top of him.

They look at the rabbit as he’s now covered nicely with a blanket, its tail wags a bit at the honestly adorable sight.

Their admiration is sadly cut short as they hear the ding of the front door…

Dang it…

The Stalker’s eyes dart around worriedly as the animal walked closer to the front desk, they didn’t want Intern to have to wake up!

It quickly decides that they could do his job themself, shifting its form a bit as to look more normal, shortening their legs and changing its face — they hated doing that, but they didn’t want to bother intern.

The patient came to the desk, setting their information down on the table as they stated their name.

The Stalker could already tell that the person in front of them wasn’t an anomaly, however they still did the mandatory steps to check them.

Stamp their paper, take their picture, put their data into the computer, print their name tag, give them the name tag, they say their room number, blah blah blah.

To them that seemed like quite a lot of steps, but better safe than sorry I guess.

They followed the patient to their room, taking blood, running diagnostics and giving them the right items.

After a little bit there came another patient, then another, the Stalker repeated the same steps for each of them, making sure to do everything correctly. There had only been maybe one or two anomalies during them working, making sure to kick them all out.

The Stalker sighed, this was more exhausting than it had initially looked.

It watched as the last patient left, hearing the ding of the door closing before-

Their ears perked up, eyes wide as they quickly turned to stare at the rabbit sitting in the corner, he had shifted under the blanket, stirring a bit from his sleep.

The Stalker leaned back on the desk, eyes quickly shifting towards the open door as it darted out of the office, hiding in the corner of the waiting room, carefully looking into the window at the Intern.

After a moment, the rabbit’s eyes drowsily opened, stretching his arms up as he yawned.

He sat there for a moment before looking around at the room, wasn’t he sitting down at the desk..? Intern looked down in his lap, seeing a light blue blanket laying over him.

He sat there, rather confused, did one of the others lay him here? It still looked rather dark outside for anyone scheduled for the day shift to be here. Maybe the one nurse who ran the shop? He’d never really talked to her so that would seem odd.

Intern looked over towards the clock on the wall, 5:37, a little over 20 minutes until his shift ends.

He had slept for almost 3 hours, kind of odd for no patients to come in at all for such a long time, but he was glad, at least he got some sleep from it.

Guess he has to get up now.
