It was such a nice and sunny day. Birds chirping, leaves rustling. However, the summer sun was enough to make even Antartica burn over! Inside the tree house lay six kids— feeling the effect of said hot sun.
"Uuuuuugh, this sucksssss.." Kel whined, fanning an orange Joe gift card that was laying around to cool himself, but to no avail.
"Tell me about it.." Aubrey mummered, using a tiny hand held fan, shirt drenched with sweat from the heat just like everyone else's.
"Must be pretty serious for you to be- agreeing with Kel.." Hero tried to crack a joke, to distract from the blazing heat, but was met with glares from everyone.. (except Mari, who clapped softly out of sympathy!!)
"...I think im hallucinating... Basil's head looks like a watermelon.. so cold and juicy.." Mari mumbled, staring at Basil with squinted eyes.
"I think we should-" Basil itched at his collar. "Vote for someone to run into the house and grab us popsicles.." He huffed. It was a fairly good idea.
Mari would've normally offered to do it, but couldnt for two reasons.
#1, her bad knee prevented her from running fast, which meant she'd burn outside.
#2, It was just too hot!!!
"I think club president should do it!!" Kel tried to proudly exclaim.
"...Club president?" Aubrey slowly asked. "Kel.. we don't have a club president, idiot. This is hardly even a club" She jabbed at him.
Kel huffed and muttered "then lets just get one, smarty pants."
Sunny perked up, more eager than normal as he said one word:
"Election.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
So thats how it started.
All six sat at the table. The rules were; everyone had to run. They also had to do their best, and the person who wins the most votes at the end had to go inside and get the stuff.. but they were official "club president."
"Okay!" Mari exclaimed. "Who wants to start?"
"I do, I do!! Okay, I think i would make an excellent president for America!!" Kel exclaimed.
"Kel, that's not—" Hero started.
"Just hear my cool slogan!! 'Freak ice, orange Joe is better without it anyways!!" He proudly exclaimed.
"That's may be true, Kel, but what can you provide for the club?" Mari asked.
"....orange joe?"
Hero face palmed, and Aubrey shoved him out the way, exclaiming "me next, me next!!"
"I think I would be a respectable club leader! In our current pradicament, you need someone quick and.. efficant, to get us through these tough times!!" Aubrey cheered.
Basil let out a small clap.
Kel muttered "show off.."
Mari nodded, and then asked "what about the long term effects?"
"...long term e—.. what?"
"NEEXTTT!!" Kel interrupted.
"...I think I would—" Hero started.
"BOOOO!!" Kel exclaimed.
"You can't do it, you're a big kid!!" Aubrey complained
"...boo.." sunny muttered.
"They do have a point, Hero.. it wouldn't be fair.." Basil softly said.
"W-What? Wait, when was that a rule!?" -Hero
"Majority rules, Hero!!" -Mari
"M-Mari!?"
••••••••••••••
"Ahem.. so.." Basil started. "Why I should be club president.." He cleared his throat before speaking clearly.
"I think I would be a good club president because I can provide for this club in ways others couldn't. I can run fast.. I think.. and I'm a problem solver and can think for everyone while also allowing my friends to have their own opinions." He rambled. When he stopped, everyone was looking up at him. The claps started slow.. then got faster.
Basil let out a breath he didn't know he was holding as he sat back down next to sunny, who was giving him applause.
"..good job. That was amazing." Sunny spoke with rare interest.
Basil nodded slightly, blushing a bit at the attention. "Thank you, guys. I'll never forget you." He blurted out.
Kel sneered and puffed out his chest. "You won't have too! We'll be friends forever, together!"
"Yeah, he's right, Basil!" Aubrey (rarely) agreed with him.
Basil held back tears, smiling at the group. He decided now was the perfect time to take a picture.
*shutter*
The picture came out perfect, as expected, reminding him that everything will be okay.
Sunny slowly stood up, facing the rest of the group. It was his turn.
"You got this, bro!" Kel exclaimed.
"Good luck, Sunny!!" Aubrey also exclaimed.
"Knock us down" Hero said, his dad like voice coming through
"I believe in you, little brother." Mari smiled softly.
Sunny looked at his friends. He opened his mouth. He began to speak.
"I-"
***BOOM***
the sound of thunder crashed as the rain immediately began pouring down. Kel excitedly bounced up, practically jumping down the tree house.
"THE HEAT IS OVER!! CMON EVERYONE!!" He grinned, sprinting through the rain. Aubrey was next to go.
"Hey! Idiot, don't run through the rain, you'll get sick!" She exclaimed, however she couldn't stop the smile curling on her face as she too ran to the padio door with Kel.
"H-Hey, don't leave us, we're coming too!" Basil called out, following the crowd and giggling slightly.
Hero blushed slightly, holding up an umbrella towards Mari. His expression was sheepish.
"I was wondering if.. we could.. y'know.." he started. Mari laughed softly, before moving to his side and putting her hand over his, on the umbrella handle.
They smiled lovingly at each other and climbed down, running too.
While everyone was inside drying off, Mari stood on the patio, waiting on Sunny. She looked up at the tree house.
"Sunny!! Are you coming?" She asked.
Sunny looked down at all of his friends, waiting on him. Who was he to deny? He let of a shy smile and he too, climbed down to join his friends.
In this moment, he could tell.
He could tell that..
Everything will be okay.

..for now.
