Work Text:

The air inside the gymnasium carries the distinct, suffocating heat of several hundred high schoolers packed together in polyester, cheap perfume, and artificial floor wax. Streamers hang limp from the rafters, and the synthesized rhythm of early 2000s pop vibrates through the polished hardwood floors. Brian Kinney stands near the periphery, adjusting the cuffs of his suit jacket. He isn't supposed to be here. Turning Justin down initially had felt like the sensible, predictable play—the sharp, cynical line in the sand he always draws to keep his carefully constructed life intact. But standing here now, watching the dim party lights catch the edges of Justin’s hair, Brian knows he made the right call showing up.

When the music slows to a thick, melodic tempo, Brian doesn't hesitate. He steps directly onto the crowded floor, pulling Justin in close. The whispers from the surrounding teenagers start almost instantly—sharp, startled gasps and judgmental murmurs rippling outward like waves. Brian ignores every bit of it. He wraps an arm around Justin’s waist, drawing the younger boy against his chest, and moves to the music. In front of the entire student body, the faculty chaperones, and the glaring eyes of suburban normalcy, Brian leans down and presses his lips to Justin’s.

It isn't a defensive act. It isn't a taunt. It is pure, intoxicating freedom. For a man who spends every waking hour maintaining absolute control over his image, kissing Justin right here feels like shedding armor he didn't even realize was weighing him down.

A cool April breeze sweeps through the damp concrete of the adjacent parking structure, carrying the distant hum of Pittsburgh traffic. Smiling, their fingers tightly intertwined, Brian and Justin navigate the dim aisles toward the black Wrangler parked under a flickering fluorescent tube.

Justin’s grip on Brian’s hand is warm and firm, his knuckles slightly white from holding on so tightly. They stop right beside the driver’s side door. The quiet of the garage wraps around them, a sharp contrast to the bass-heavy noise of the gym they just left. Brian pulls Justin in once more, pressing another slow, deliberate kiss to his mouth.

"This was the best night of my life," Justin whispers as they break apart. His voice carries the unvarnished, earnest sincerity of an eighteen-year-old who feels everything with terrifying intensity.

Brian grins, his signature smirk softened at the edges. Looking down into Justin’s bright, wide eyes, a sudden, heavy pressure builds in his chest. Three specific words press against the back of his teeth, demanding to be spoken. I love you. The phrase is right there, hovering on the tip of his tongue, terrifying in its weight. He opens his mouth, but the ingrained defenses of twenty-nine years of self-preservation lock his jaw. He can't spit them out.

Justin doesn't need to hear them spoken aloud. He senses the raw, unspoken wave of emotion passing between them. A soft red flush spreads across Justin's cheeks, and he looks down shyly, a small, knowing smile tugging at his lips. Brian leans in one last time, pressing a tender kiss to Justin's forehead, then pulls away so they can part ways for the night.

Brian reaches into his pocket and pulls out his keyring, the metal clinking loudly in the quiet space. He shuffles through the keys, looking for the ignition key, but his hand slows down. He stops. A sudden thought takes root—a sudden, uncharacteristic desire to break his own rules once more tonight. Why leave Justin here to ride home with his friends? He considers turning around, taking Justin back to the loft, and letting the night stretch out between them.

He turns around on his heel, opening his mouth to call out Justin's name across the quiet garage.

That's when he sees him.

A figure moves quickly out from behind a concrete pillar, heading straight toward Justin’s unsuspecting back. Brian’s brow furrows as his mind rapidly processes the face under the harsh overhead lighting. Chris, he thinks. The suburban kid with the bitter eyes who'd been glaring all evening. Then Brian’s eyes drop lower, catching the metallic flash of an aluminum baseball bat gripped tightly in the kid's white-knuckled hands. Chris raises the bat high, swinging it back with full force, aiming straight for the back of Justin’s head.

Brian doesn't think. The hyper-vigilant survival instincts that govern every second of his life snap into complete overdrive. He drops his keys onto the oil-stained concrete with a loud jangle and sprints forward.

He covers the distance in two explosive strides. Reaching Justin just as the bat begins its arc downward, Brian throws his entire body weight forward. He shoves Justin hard out of the trajectory, launching the younger boy sideways onto the ground. CRACK. The solid aluminum bat violently collides with Brian’s outstretched forearm instead of Justin’s skull. The sound is deafening—a horrifying, sickening crunch of bone giving way under brute force.

"AAGGHHH!" A tear of agony rips from Brian's throat, a raw, primal scream that echoes off every concrete wall in the garage.

Pain flares white-hot through his entire body, blinding and absolute, dragging him down to his knees. His left arm hangs unnaturally, shattered at the midpoint. But even through the white noise of agony screaming through his nerves, one clear thought pierces the haze: Better my arm than his head.

The sheer volume of Brian’s scream shatters the silence of the school grounds. Shouts echo from the gym doors as chaperones and students rush out to see what happened. Panicked by the noise and the suddenly approaching crowd, Chris drops the bat with a clattering thud against the pavement and runs into the shadows of the night. Justin hits the ground hard, rolling over in confusion before realization hits him like a physical blow. He scrambling backward on his hands and knees, terror draining all color from his face as he looks at Brian collapsed on the concrete, clutching his ruined arm.

"Fuck, Bri!" Justin gasps, his voice trembling violently as he drops to his knees beside him, tears instantly spilling over his lashes. "What did—why did you...?"

Brian rocks forward, chest heaving, cold sweat breaking out across his forehead as he looks up into Justin's panicked eyes. Through gritted teeth, his voice barely a rough whisper above the ambient noise of the garage, he finally says it. "'Cause I love you..."
