Francesca stared at Alice in horror. “You - what even are you?”
Alice - though she supposed that was not her true name - smirked. It fit better on her face than what Francesca now knew was a pretence of kindness ever had. “Nothing and nobody,” she said lightly. “A shadow, a spectre, whatever is wished for. Your end, if I must.”
“What do you mean my end?” Francesca demanded.
“Don’t play dumb, my dear. It doesn’t suit you.”
“Don’t call me that!” Francesca snapped. “You lost the right when you betrayed me!”
“Oh, betrayal is such a strong word. I merely steer things as necessary.”
“And who deems what is necessary? You? What authority do you claim?”
“Oh,” Alice said, half-smiling. “None at all. I don’t make the calls. I merely execute them.”
